This book talks about the growth in town life from the 1870's to the present day. At the end of that year, she said, “Your year's up. What are you going to do?” The truth is that I didn't have any idea. ‎ I happened to attend a community event and saw a table set up by Greater Cleveland Volunteers. They asked me, “Are you interested in tutoring children in public schools?” I thought: I've always been the one talking about what the teachers aren't doing and what the schools aren't doing, and what they need to do, so this was my chance to actually do something.‎ It had never occurred to me that I would like doing something like this. But I went in for an interview, and was accepted at last.‎ Now, this is my sixth year working three days a week, five hours a day. We help the children learn to read. Their teacher gives us an evaluation (评价) of where the students' weaknesses are, and we work on those areas. With the kindergartners, it's mostly ABCs. They can sing the ABC song but can't recognize the letters. ‎ At the school I'm tutoring now, there are more than 40 kids. The ones who are lagging (落后) in those areas of literacy may get lost sometimes. Teachers don't have time to work with the individual students and get them up to the level with the rest of the kids, so we are a big help to them.‎ I was a complainer about poor schools, but I have found out they are doing the best they can with the resources that they have. And I get enjoyment from giving back and helping those who need help.‎ 篇章导读:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者退休后在克利夫兰公立学校当辅导教师的经历,从而对辅导教师角色有了新的认识。‎ ‎5.What's the author's attitude toward the public schools before?‎ A.Dissatisfied. B.Respectful.‎ C.Uninterested. D.Approving.‎ 答案:A 推理判断题。由第二段中的“I thought: I've always been the one talking about ... what they need to do”及最后一段第一句可推知,作者过去爱挑公立学校的毛病,对学校的表现不满意。‎ ‎6.What's the children's weakness?‎ A.They easily get lost.‎ B.They don't know the letters.‎ C.They can't sing the ABC song well.‎ D.They have some trouble with learning.‎ 答案:B 细节理解题。由第四段最后一句“They can sing the ABC song but can't recognize the letters.” ‎ ‎7.What does the author want to tell us by writing the text?‎ A.Change yourself by doing something special.‎ B.Raise people's awareness of education equality.‎ C.Do something useful to make your dream come true.‎ D.Stop complaining and take action to make a difference.‎ 答案:D 推理判断题。从第二段中的“so this was my chance to actually do something”以及倒数第二段中的“so we are a big help to them”不难看出,作者写此文的目的是想告诉我们用实际行动来改变自己不满意的事物。‎ ‎ ‎ tutor vt. I was a complainer about poor schools, but I have found out they are doing the best they can with the resources that they have.‎ 译文:我过去总是抱怨贫穷的学校,但我发现他们在利用他们拥有的资源,尽他们所能做到最好。 在宾语从句中,they can是省略了关系代词that的定语从句,修饰先行词the best; that they have是定语从句,修饰先行词resources。‎ Ⅱ.完形填空 ‎“I feel like Rocky coming out of retirement,” says the Englishborn polar __1__. For example, the university application process is full of acronyms (缩写): EA(Early Action), ED(Early Decision), ED 2(Early Decision second deadline). __1__.‎ Early Action(EA)‎ Early Action is a great gift for the well-prepared student. __2__, typically Nov.1. The good thing is that students receive information of their acceptance, rejection or delay much earlier, with some in December but some not until the end of January. The best benefit is that EA is not binding (有约束力的), so students may apply to more than one school. ‎ Early Decision(ED) and Early Decision second deadline(ED 2)‎ ED is simple. You apply early—typically by Nov.1—and you're informed early—typically by Dec. 24. If you're accepted, it's binding—you must go. ‎ ‎__3__. ED 2 is frequently used by students who applied ED elsewhere and were either rejected or delayed.‎ There are some disadvantages with Early Decision, however. Yes, the numbers can be very appealing. __4__. Early Decision applicants are frequently athletes, or development cases—where the family has donated a lot of money, etc.‎ The Early Decision choice is binding. Once students are accepted ED, they are asked to withdraw their applications from all other schools where they have applied. __5__.‎ A.Thus, ED is a big decision B.Now a small number of universities have added an ED 2‎ C.To help you understand this, here's some information about them D.Since it is binding, you are allowed to apply to only one college E.Students must submit their complete application by an earlier deadline F.But families need to understand that the applicant pool for ED is typically stronger G.Students accepted are not required to inform the college of their decision until May 1‎ ‎1.C ‎ ‎5.A 根据本段的第一句话 “The Early Decision choice is binding.”‎ 可知,如果ED申请成功,就不能更改,所以ED是个重大的决定。‎ ‎ ‎ be admitted to 被录取 apply to 申请 withdraw v. Once students are accepted ED, they are asked to withdraw their applications from all other schools where they have applied.‎ 译文:一旦学生通过ED申请被录取,他们就被要求从所有其他申请学校撤回申请。 ‎
