When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can give you a false picture.‎ ‎ For example , some might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票) . It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars! "‎ This guy is a winner , right?  Maybe , maybe not. We then discover that he bought  $200 worth of tickets, and only one was a winner. He’s really a big loser!‎ He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.‎ Some politicians often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith's last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents says, " During Govemor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs !” That’s true. However, an honest statement would  have been ,” During Govemor Smith’s term , the state had a net gain of two million jobs. "‎ Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.‎ This kind of deception happens too often. Lt’s a sad fact of life :Lies are lies , and sometimes the truth can lie as well.‎ ‎56. We may infer that the author believes people should _______.‎ A. buy lottery tickets if possible B. make use of half-truths C. be careful about what they are told D. not trust the Yucky Company ‎57. How many examples does the writer give to show how the truth is used to deceive?‎ ‎ A. one B. Two C. Three D. Four ‎58. Which of the following is true according to the passage?‎ 13‎ ‎ ‎ A. Using half truths is against the law.‎ B. Technically, half truths are in fact lies.‎ C. Yucky Pills is a very good medicine for toothache.‎ D. Governor Smith did a good job during her last term.‎ B Tim Richter and his wife, Linda, had taught for over 30 years near Buffalo, New York--he in computers, she in special education. “Teaching means everything to us,” Tim would say. In April1998, he learned he would need a heart operation. It was the kind of news that leads to some serious thinking about life’s purpose.‎ Not long after the surgery, Tim saw a brochure describing Imagination Library, a program started by Dolly Parton’ s foundation (基金会) that mailed a book every month to children from birth to age five in the singer’s home town of Sevier, Tennessee. “I thought, maybe Linda and I could do something like this when we retire”. Tim recalls.  He placed the brochure on his desk, “as a reminder.”‎ Five years later, now retired and with that brochure still on the desk, Tim clicked on imagination library .com. The program had been opened up to partners who could take advantage of book and postage discounts.‎ The quality of the books was of great concern to the Richters.  Rather than sign up online, they went to Dollywood for a look-see. We didn’t want to give the children rubbish,” says Linda. The books-reviewed each year by teachers, literacy specialists and Dollywood board members-included classics such as Ezra Jack Keats’s The Snowy Day and newer books like Anna Dewdney’s Llama Llama series.‎ Satisfied, the couple set up the Richter Family Foundation and got to work. Since 2004, they have shipped more than 12,200 books to preschoolers in their in their area. Megan Williams, a mother of four, is more than appreciative: “This program introduces us to books I’ve never heard of .”‎ The Richters spend about $400 a month sending books to 200 children. “Some people sit there and wait to die,” says Tim. “Others get as busy as they can in the time they have left.”‎ ‎59.What did Tim want to do after learning about Imagination Library?‎ A. Give out brochures.                         B .Do something similar.‎ C. Write books for children                    D. Retire from being a teacher.‎ ‎60.According to the text, Dollly  Parton is           .‎ A. a well-known surgeon                     B. a mother of a four-year-old C. a singer born in Tennessee                  D .a computer programmer ‎61.Why did the Richters go to Dollywood?‎ 13‎ ‎ ‎ A. To avoid signing up online.‎ B. To meet Dollywood board members.‎ C. To make sure the books were the newest.‎ D. To see if the books were of good quality.‎ ‎ C Whether we’re 2 years old or 62, our reasons for lying are mostly the same: to get out of trouble, for personal gain and to make ourselves look better in the eyes of others. But a growing body of research is raising questions about how a child’s lie is different from an adult’s lie, and how the way we deceive changes as we grow.‎ ‎“Parents and teachers who catch their children lying should not be alarmed. Their children are not going to turn out to be abnormal liars,” says Dr. Lee, a professor at the University of Toronto and director of the Institute of Child Study. He has spent the last 15 years studying how lying changes as kids get older, why some people lie more than others as well as which factors can reduce lying. The fact that children tell lies is a sign that they have reached a new developmental stage. Dr. Lee conducted a series of studies in which they bring children into a lab with hidden cameras. Children and young adults aged 2 to 17 are likely to lie while being told not to look at a toy, which is put behind the child’s back. Whether or not the child takes a secret look is caught on tape.‎ For young kids, the desire to cheat is big and 90% take a secret look in these experiments. When the test-giver returns to the room, the child is asked if he or she looked secretly. At age 2, about a quarter of children will lie and say they didn’t. By 3, half of kids will lie, and by 4, that figure is 90%, studies show.‎ Researchers have found that it’s kids with better understanding abilities who lie more. That’s because to lie you also have to keep the truth in mind, which includes many brain processes, such as combining several sources of information and faking that information. The ability to lie — and lie successfully  — is thought to be related to development of brain regions that allow so called “executive functioning”, or higher order thinking and reasoning abilities. Kids who perform better on tests that involve executive functioning also lie more.‎ ‎62.What’s the purpose of children telling lies?‎ A. To help their friends out.‎ B. To get rid of trouble.‎ C. To get attention from others.‎ D. To create a popular image.‎ ‎63.The underlined word “deceive” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “       ”.‎ A. tell lies                                B. handle troubles 13‎ ‎ ‎ C. raise questions                      D. do research ‎64.From the second paragraph we can know that       .‎ A. which factors can reduce lying B. why some lie more than others C. it is normal for kids to tell lies D. how lying changes as kids grow ‎65.What is NOT included in the passage?‎ A. The reasons why kids tell lies.‎ B. Which kind of kids tells more lies.‎ C. Experiments about lying of young kids.‎ D. What to do with lying children.‎ 第二卷 (非选择题,共45分)‎ 第四部分 任务型阅读(满分10分)‎ ‎ 阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最适当的单词。注意:每空一个单词。‎ Having a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. Whether you’ve decided to room with a friend or a total stranger, the rules are still the same. If you want to have a good relationship with your roommate, it all starts with you.‎ ‎ Follow the four tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour:‎ ‎ You’ve heard it before: Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. I’ve seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. This method creates nothing but awkward situations and general unhappiness.‎ ‎ Some roommates become the best of friends, and some don’t. don’t’ put pressure on yourself or your roommate to reach this level, especially when you first meet. Remember, you’ve trying to make a new friend, not scare your roommate away. And if your roommate doesn’t end up being your best friend, don’t worry about it. My first-year roommate and I didn’t end up becoming best friends, but we are friends---and I couldn’t have been happier with my roommate situation.‎ ‎ Everyone hates dirty places. If you make a mess, don’t leave it for someone else to clean up. This should go without saying. Don’t be a slob (懒汉). Make sure you do your fair share of dormitory chores, such as taking out the trash and recycling, and cleaning the washroom. Or, at last, just don’t bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage and you ‎ 13‎ ‎ ‎ should be all right. Most people I’ve encountered(遭遇)in college are messy. You don’t have all the time in the world to clean your room and keep it organized. But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.‎ ‎ If you want to lose a friend, borrow everything without asking. If you want to keep the relationship going, show you roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask whenever you want to reach for snacks, clothes, supplies and anything else that you don’t own. And upon moving into the dorm, you need to make clear which items you both feel comfortable sharing.‎ ‎ If you want a good roommate, you have to be a good roommate, Yes, there are exceptions. Sometimes being a good person and reaching out to your roommate simply isn’t enough. Sometimes you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy or just isn’t happy and doesn’t want any sort of relationship. Whatever the case may be, the name of the game is always the same: respect. If you can’t give it, you definitely don’t deserve to get it.‎ Four 66. ______________ to Be a Great Roommate Dormitory life is a usually one of the most cherished parts of one’s time at college. Get ready to avoid the common mistakes.‎ Have a friendly 67._______‎ Instead of burying your feelings or 68_________ about each other, you’d better communicate with your roommate frankly to get along well with each other.‎ Don’t 69_______the roommates to be your best friends.‎ Sharing the same dorm doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be best friends for each other, but it’s better to make a friend than an enemy to experience college 70.______‎ Clean up after yourself. Or, at least, keep your mess on your side.‎ It is believed that in a shared space, all roommates should help in keeping the room tidy instead of 71._______ the burden on just one while the others do whatever they want.‎ Never take anything 72._________asking.‎ To keep belongings safe and avoid fighting late, let each other know in a polite way if you have to share the other’s items.
