1 Module 4 A Social Survey-My NeighbourhoodSection Ⅰ Introduction & Reading-Pre-reading When buying or renting a house, everyone expects not only the good quality of the house but also the nice neighbours. However, different people have different standards (标准) of good neighbours. In my opinion, a good neighbour should be someone who respects your life, and is ready to help others and concerned about the environment in the neighbourhood. First of all, it is very important for your neighbour to respect your life. Just imagine, if you have a neighbour who is curious about you, and tries to know more about you by whatever means, what will you feel? What is more, he or she may also talk with others about your life. You will feel very uncomfortable to have such kind of people in your neighbourhood and you may move as soon as possible. What you should consider next is that a good neighbour is always willing to give you a hand when you need him or her. For example, if you are not at home and some suspect (嫌疑人) tries to unlock your door, your neighbour who sees it should call the police, and he or she will help you to protect your property (财产). Finally, a good neighbour should be concerned about the environment, especially around your neighbourhood. He or she should throw all the rubbish into garbage and keep the place clean, because a good environment can make people in it comfortable 2 all the time. Since then I have met a few of my neighbours who are very nice people. For Christmas, I thought I would do something nice for each of the neighbours I knew. There were nine neighbours whom I knew by name or spoke with often when I was out in my yard. I knew which houses they lived in. I decided to add one more to my list. This lady I decided to add lives down the street from me. I meet her every morning walking to work as I drive down the street. She always smiles to me. But I had no idea who she was and which house she lived in. I planned to make small fruit baskets and leave them on my neighbours’ front porches (门廊) on Christmas Eve. I signed the cards:“Happy Holidays from 5104 Northumberland Road.” I saved the last for the friendly lady. I finally decided on a house where I met her each morning and guessed that it was hers. My neighbours really appreciated the baskets and would tell me as they saw me in the yard or they would call, and a couple even came by to thank me. This morning I found a small note in the mailbox. It was addressed simply: Resident,5104 Northumberland Road. The thankyou card really caught me by surprise. I opened it and read the message, “Thank you for the lovely fruit basket you left on our porch. It was very thoughtful. Richard Kelly passed away last week. He talked a lot about how nice it was that someone remembered him in his time of illness. He really appreciated it.” I had no idea who Richard Kelly was and that he had been seriously ill. I had left that nice lady’s basket on his porch by mistake. I wanted to say sorry, but that would be wrong. I believe that Mr Kelly was meant to have that basket because he was dying. I hate that nice lady did not get to receive a fruit basket on Christmas, but I believe if she knew what had happened, she would be happy. I feel pleased to have helped Richard Kelly’s last days be more cheerful. 1.How many Christmas gifts did the author intend to send? A.Nine. B.Eight. C.Ten. B.Her address was 5104 Northumberland Road. C.She was thought to share a house with Mr Kelly. His dog died in early July and the loss has affected him deeply. He has already formed his living style. That is to say, he has built his daily life around the dog walks and made relationships (关系) in the neighborhood with other dog walkers and owners. His parents did not want him to get another dog because they wanted his life to be more reasonable and meaningful; they wanted him to find work and not worry about walking the dog. I also saw that he helped his parents a lot with housework. 10 I wanted to do something to help him. But all I could think of was to include him with my family for walks with our dogs, for a picnic, and to go to get a coffee. Then I thought maybe something else would help. He was resistant (抗拒的) at first, but after only one week he told us about how much they need his help. He seems confident and active now. I’m pleased that he got himself out to go help. Over the years I have had all kinds of neighbors, ones that were enjoyable and others that were to be avoided at all costs. One of the most important things in being a good neighbor is to respect a person’s privacy (隐私).When someone new moves into the neighborhood it is a good idea to watch them to see how friendly you should be. If you go rushing over as soon as they move in, they may think you are going to be one of those neighbors that come over at all times of the day, not respecting their privacy. It is a good idea always to be friendly to everyone in the neighborhood. This can not only put you on good terms with them, but will also be a form of protection for your family and home. If you wave as they drive by or offer a friendly hello while they are out in their yard, this shows that you respect them. If you are friendly to them, they are much more likely to watch out for any wrong doings going on around your home while you are out and let you know if anything happens. Another way of being a good neighbor is to be helpful in times of need. If you see that they are in need of a helping hand doing something or in times of a disaster (灾难), it is good to offer your help. Even though you have never really talked to the people down the street, they are willing to take the time to help out a neighbor in need. In conclusion, if you respect people’s privacy, treat them kindly and be helpful when you see they are in need, you will be a great neighbor and anyone would be happy to have you next door! 9.If you are getting along well with your neighbors you can ________. D.A friend in need is a friend indeed. 11.In the opinion of the author, neighbors should always be ________. A.helpful, strong and kind B.honest, active and friendly C.respectful, friendly and helpful D.polite, honest and kind 解析:选 C 细节理解题。 12.The author develops the topic of this passage based on his________. A.practical experiences B.scientific experiments C.careful research D.wide knowledge 解析:选 A 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Over the years I have had all kinds of neighbors, ones that were enjoyable and others that were to be avoided at all costs.”,再结合全文的内容可以推断出,作者是根据自己的实际经历展开本文的话题的。 Ⅱ. When I was 16 years old, a boy gave me an important present.__1__ It was the early autumn of my first year at a junior high school, and my old school was far away.__2__ I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.
