A (2016·西安八校高三联考)When times get tough, we all look for ways to cut back. When we’re hungry, we eat at home instead of going out. We take buses instead of taxis. And we wear our old designer jeans just a few months longer. With college expenses at alltime highs, high school students are eager to do anything to cut the cost of a university education. One costcutting proposal is to allow college students to get a bachelor’s degree in three years instead of four. Educational institutions have been actively exploring ways to make the learning process more efficient. But there’s a question: Would the quality of undergraduate(本科生)education suffer? Few US universities have formally approved a “threeyear degree” model. I doubt mainstream that North American colleges will carry out a three year curriculum(课程) any time soon. For one thing, most universities already allow highly qualified students to graduate early by testing out of certain classes and obtaining a number of college credits(学分). In addition, at famous universities, the committee who determine which courses are required and which courses are electives are unlikely to suddenly “throw out” one quarter of the required credits. Professors will resist “diluting(稀释)” the quality of the education they offer. In my opinion, a quality fouryear education is always superior to a quality three year education. A college education requires sufficient time for a student to become skilled in their major and do coursework in fields outside their major. It is not a good idea to water down education, any more than it’s not a good idea to water down medicine. If we want to help students find their way through university, we should help them understand early on what knowledge and skills they need to have upon graduation. We should allow students to test out of as many courses as possible. We should give them a chance to earn money as interns(实习生)in meaningful parttime jobs that relate to their university studies, such as the fiveyear coop program at Northeastern University. 1.The first paragraph serves as a(n)________ . Around 30 percent of the post90s graduates surveyed live in a property of below 20 square meters one year after graduation. Half of the surveyed said they are unwilling to degrade their living conditions by incurring housing debts. The report, Society Blue Paper: China Social Situation Analysis and Prediction, surveyed 4,110 students born after 1990 in 12 universities across the country.Of the interviewed, 2,730 of them are currently still students at school and 1,380 are graduates. The survey reveals that in a year after graduation, more than 70 percent of graduates rent houses or live in dormitories provided by their employers. About 20 percent live at home of their parents or relatives and less than 5 percent live in the houses of their own. “The report shows most post90s graduates have to purchase a house on their own,” said Tian Feng, deputy director of the research lab for teenagers and social problems affiliated(隶属的) to CASS. It is still a rigid (一成不变的) demand for the post90s to have their own houses. Only one third of respondents agree to lower their current 3 living conditions to save money to purchase a house, and about 55 percent choose not to buy a house if the investment means a heavy debt burden. More than half of the graduates believe that property investment is the best way to maintain the value of money for the time being. However, if the graduates had a sum of money for a down payment on a home, most said they would rather use the money on entrepreneurship(创业) or other business endeavors which they say provide a sense of achievement. Tian said that on the one hand, the post1990 generation recognize traditional Chinese values which regard property as a necessity to build a family but on the other hand, they prefer a highquality and freestyle life instead of living under the economic restrictions imposed by heavy house loans. 5.Which of the following is NOT about post1990 graduates’ property ownership? A.They put more stress on personal value. B.They are unwilling to lower their current living conditions. C.They want to invest on other things providing a sense of achievement. D.They needn’t purchase a house on their own. 根据第一段中的“due to more emphasis on personal value”可 知, A 项表述正确; 根据第二段中的“Half of the surveyed said they are unwilling to degrade their living conditions”可知, B 项表述正确; 根据倒数第二段中的“most said they would rather use the money on entrepreneurship(创业) or other business endeavors which they say provide a sense of achievement”可知, C 项表述正确; 根 据第五段中的第二句“It is still a rigid(一成不变的) demand for the post90s to have their own houses.” 6.What does the underlined word “incurring”probably mean? A.Bearing. B.Leaving. C.Clearing. D.Removing. 根据第二段中的“they are unwilling to degrade their living conditions by incurring housing debts”可知, 他们不愿意因承担住房债务降低现有的 生活条件, 故可推断 incur 的词义与 bear 相近。 7.According to the passage, at most how many graduates interviewed have their own houses? A.206. B.137. C.69. D.55. 根据第三段中的“Of the interviewed...1, 380 are graduates” 和第四段中的“less than 5 percent live in the houses of their own”可知, 1 380 ×5%=69, 即最多有 69 个被采访的毕业生有自己的房子。 8.What can we infer from the last paragraph about the post1990 generation? A.They treat property as a preference to build a house. B.They prefer a highquality and freestyle life. C.They have mixed feelings about property ownership. D.They lack a sense of responsibility. But small towns across the country have their own traditions. Middleburg, a small town in the state of Virginia, is known for its horses. For more than 50 years, Middleburg has organized a yearly Christmas parade(游行). Men and women ride horses through the woods and fields. They follow hunting dogs as they search for a wild fox. But first, these hunters ride in the yearly parade, wearing their bright red hunting clothes and hats. John Hale, a citizen of Middleburg says many city people visit his town.“We have a lot of people from an urban area that come to visit, but it incorporates a lot of the old traditions.”The nighttime hayride is one such tradition. Small groups gather under the moonlight on an open wagon filled with hay. The passengers sing as farm horses pull the wagon slowly across the fields. There are some newer traditions, too. Trey Matheu works at the nearby Salamander Resort. He says a visit to Middleburg is a chance to slow down for a day. He says Middleburg can be a calming, peaceful place without tension. “Middleburg is an opportunity to take a step back, to take a deep breath, and understand that even though life is moving on at a very fast pace, there’s really an opportunity where you’re allowed to step off for a little bit.” Parade organizers say more than 13,000 people attend even in below freezing weather. But if you ask, you will hear many different reasons why people come to watch the parade: “I come here because I’m from a small town. I like how everybody comes together.” “I live right down that street, right there. And that’s my dog.” Middleburg looks its best at Christmastime. That may be why so many people return each year. 9.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
