Two men walk to the edge of the sea. They drop their heavy loads on the sand.
They forget how hot and tired they are and run into the sea. They play in the
water.
“六校联考”半期考英语试卷 第 6 页 共 19 页
These tired men are happy because one of them has just become the first person
to walk from the start of the Amazon River to the ocean. His name is Ed Stafford.
The other man’s name is Cho Sanchez. Cho has been with Ed for the final two
years of the walk. He helped Ed to find a way through the dense forests of three
South American countries: Peru, Columbia and Brazil.
The Amazon is about 6, 500 kilometres long. Ed’s walk started in April 2008
at the beginning of the river-high in the mountains of Peru. It ended two and
a half years later in August 2010 in Brazil where the river flows into the Atlantic
Ocean.
Along the way Ed Stafford faced cold snow and high mountain paths. But most
of the walk was through hot, wet forests. They faced many dangers from wild
animals. But the big danger for ED and Cho came from people. Most of the people
they met on their long walk were friendly. They gave Ed and Cho food and shelter.
But some people were afraid of Ed because he has a white skin. They had heard
stories that white people would eat their babies or steal their heads and other
parts of their bodies.
Ed understood the people’s fear. He says, “They only wanted to protect
their land and the way they live. When they know there is no danger they are
very kind.”
On his walk Ed saw that many trees had been cut down. This made him very
sad. Too many trees are being destroyed, and this is changing the climate of
the world.
Ed Stafford did something no one else has achieved. Now he wants to tell
people all around the world about the dangers we face from destroying the forests
of Peru and Brazil.
24. Why were the local people afraid of Ed?
A. Ed was a danger to them.
B. Ed looked strange to them.
C. They saw white people do cruel things.
D.They had misunderstanding of white people.

A. To help the local people.

27. What could be the best title for the text?

It is exam time in the year 2020 and pupils are feeling tense. Suddenly gentle
music starts to play, the corridors filled with a soft blue light and a soft
breeze blows through the classrooms. In another part of the school, a geography
teacher creates a jungle in his classroom, complete with steam, heat and smells.
Elsewhere, a history teacher recreates the freezing conditions of the siege of
Leningrad (列宁格勒保卫战).
“Intelligent” school buildings, which respond to pupils’ moods, are just
one of the predictions made in a report by Futurelab, the Bristol education
centre .
They predict that in 13 years’ time, pupils will have 24-hour access to
a new kind of wireless—incorporating the Internet, television and telephone —
through tiny devices in the fabric of their clothes. Pupils will be able to look
back at lessons at any time via special glasses, which will record their whole
lives, creating a reliable “virtual memory”. Hands-free virtual reality
computer games will change, too, by picking up brain activity through a tiny
cap worn by the player. Virtual environments, such as those already found in
the online game Second Life, will allow pupils to have lessons with teachers
“六校联考”半期考英语试卷 第 8 页 共 19 页
in other schools or overseas.
Security in schools will change, too. Advanced biometric ( 生 物 计量
的 ) full-body scanning system, embedded ( 镶 嵌 ) in doorways, could
allow pupils and staff access to different rooms without the need for
keys, passwords or retinal (视网膜的) scans. And the system would refuse
access to criminals and excluded pupils.
Keri Racer, the research director at Future-lab, said technology would
become so embedded in clothes, everyday objects and schools that it would
become harder to see where the child ends and the technology begins.
28. The first paragraph serves as a( n) _______.
A. introduction B. discussion C. analysis D.
description
29. Which of the following is true about the “Intelligent” school buildings
in 2020?
A. They can prevent students from feeling nervous.
B. They can react properly to students’ moods.
“六校联考”半期考英语试卷 第 9 页 共 19 页
C. They are open to students 24 hours a day.
D. They can let students have different lessons at the same time.
30. What can students do in 13 years’ time according to paragraph 3?
A. They can remember everything without any effort.
B. They can have the Internet in the fabric of their clothes.
C. They can review lessons anytime they like.
D. They can learn through computer games.
31. What’s the purpose of advanced biometric full-body scanning systems?
A. To make the school safer.
B. To pick out the potential criminals.
C. To make access to different rooms easier.
D. To check on the health of students and staff.

A blow-fly (绿头苍蝇) was looking for an ideal place to lay eggs, like
rotting meat, so that when her little maggots (蛆) were born, they could feed
on the meat.
As she turned a corner in the grassland, she smelt something stinking in
the air. The smell of rotten meat! With great joy she perched on it and laid
her eggs. She was happy that her children would have enough food to eat.
The blow-fly did not know she had made a great mistake. What she had sat
upon was not meat but a flower, which stinks. It is called a carrion flower (牛
尾草). So, when the blow-fly’s eggs hatched and the little maggots came out,
they had nothing to eat. They died of starvation.
The carrion flower is one of the many flowers which give out dirty smells
to attract flies. The Rafflesia stinks like rotting meat, while the tropical
Lords and Ladies flower gives out a smell like rotting fish.
They do it for a special reason. Unlike mating birds, these plants cannot
move from their place. But it is important for the male cell of one plant to
get in touch with the female cell of another plant. Once that is done , the seed
“六校联考”半期考英语试卷 第 10 页 共 19 页
of the plant will bloom and give birth to another plant.
The plant uses its stink to attract flies. As soon as the blow-fly sits on
the flower, it is captured by the flower with strong hair. When the hair falls,
the fly is free to fly, but it takes some pollen (花粉) with it. And goes and
sits on another plant. The male cell of one plant meets the female cell of the
other. The seed gets new life.
32. What does the underlined word “stinking” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Moving around.
B. Shaking in the wind.
C. Being in full bloom.
D. Giving out bad smell.
33. What happens to the maggots after a blow-fly lays its eggs on a carrion flower?
A. They feed on the flower.
B. They die of hunger.
C. They become blow-flies again.
D. They become food of the flower.
34. Why does the carrion flower attract flies?
A. To get food for itself.
B. To kill the flies.
C. To get their maggots.
D. To let the flies help with its reproduction.
35. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The blow-fly only lays eggs on a carrion flower.
B. The carrion-flower and the blow-fly benefit each other.
C. The blow-fly falls victim to the carrion flower in the end.
D. The blow-fly helps the carrion flower in an important way.

Many people become successful because they pay attention to the lessons that
“六校联考”半期考英语试卷 第 11 页 共 19 页
life teaches them. 36 However, by learning to deal with the challenges,
one can come out of the experience, wiser, stronger and more able to face whatever
else lies ahead.
Life lessons can occur in any area. Although we learn many things each day,
we don’t always learn something that we feel will affect our behavior for the
rest of our lives. 37 It is usually something we are greatly changed by.
For example, if we respond in a certain way to something and then face
unpleasant consequences, we’ll rethink how we handled the situation. This can
serve as a life lesson so that when we’re faced with similar circumstances,
we can consciously change our behavior. 38
Such lessons in relationships are as varied and unique as each relationship,
yet there are common themes. 39 Some of us learn a major life lesson when
a loved one dies, and we wish we had spent more time with that person. This lesson
can result in us spending more time with our remaining loved ones.
40 Since the lesson is learned through the consequences of our actions
or reactions, in this way we can gain insight into how we think, act and react
in certain situations. Perhaps one of the biggest lessons we can finally learn
is that while we can’t control everything, we can control our response to things.
A. Life lessons are unique to each person.
B. Some of these lessons are learned the hard way.
C. This separates a life lesson from everything else we learn.
D. Spending more time with loved ones is one of the examples.
E. Life lessons can serve to help us understand ourselves better.
F. One way to improve your life is to learn something new every day.
G. To put it simply, a life lesson teaches us not to make the same mistake twice.

“Pick up the pace! ” said Amy’s husband. “But I can’t !” Amy said,
her heart beating quickly inside. “I can’t go any faster! ” Her husband
encouraged her, “Yes, you can! You’re making progress every day.”
To help Amy stay healthy, her husband had been running with her for over
two years. Several years ago, Amy could barely walk down the stairs of her
apartment building due to fatness caused by eating disorders. She realized the
problem after a failed job interview and began walking to improve her ability
to move. At first, she could walk for only 15 minutes at a time. But she pushed
herself every day, walking 5 minutes longer than she did the day before until
she walked for an hour and eventually two. For three years, Amy kept her walking
habit, slowly and painstakingly building her body shape. Then she changed her
walking shoes to running shoes about two years ago and became an excellent runner.

In March 2001, an advertisement invited people to nominate(提名) an ordinary
person who inspired them to bring the Olympic flame to Salt Lake City as torch
bearers (火炬手) or support runners. (Support runners serve as “guardians of
the flame” and run with torch bearers along the journey.) Amy’s experiences
touched her husband, so he nominated her to be a torch bearer. The possibility
to be selected was low, but Amy wanted to try.
Running taught Amy the importance of training for a race. She pictured
herself running a race and crossing the finish line. For months, she ran through
her neighborhood carrying a broken-off broom handle, feeling the weight of the
torch. She waved at her neighbors, pretending they were cheering crowds. She
also printed a picture of a torch bearer wearing the white uniform, replaced
the face with a picture of hers, and put it onto her refrigerator door.
Every day, Amy imagined herself as a torch bearer. She was training for a
historic running event. On September 26th, while on her daily run through her
neighborhood, an express package arrived.

Paragraph 1:
Amy opened it and found a letter and a book on the Olympics. The letter read,
“Congratulations! You’ve been selected as a support runner for the Olympic Torch Relay...”
Although she wouldn’t be wearing the white uniform and carrying the torch as she had
imagined, she wasn’t disappointed. She completed the required physical examination ,
delivered the forms, and waited. Months later, another package arrived. It contained her
official blue support runner uniform along with instructions for her part of the relay. Then on
a cold day, Amy and her husband stood outside the Torch Relay collection point.
Paragraph 2:
One of today’s torch bearers can’t run her part, announced the relay organizer. Then he
dropped folded pieces of paper into his hat, saying, “One lucky support runner will become a
torch bearer. Select a number now. ” Luckily, Amy became the torch bearer. When it was her
turn to carry the flame, she positioned herself to receive the flame. Holding it tight, she ran
down the street filled with people waving flags. The Olympic theme song was broadcast. Amy
smiled and waved to the crowds, knowing that she was carrying not only the torch, but also
the Olympic spirit.

W: I feel so cross. If I ever see him again, I’m definitely going to tell him a thing or two.
M: Take it easy, Monica. That guy isn’t worth arguing with.
W: I told him that he couldn’t return the T-shirt because the price tag had already been removed,
and he just started yelling at me and complained to our store manager, saying it was all my fault.
He even threatened to call the police.
M: I know, but you know our policy — no argument with our customer even if you think you are
absolutely right. So just let it go.
Text 7 (140词) 打算搬家
M: Can you help me find a new apartment? I can’t stand my roommate anymore.
W: Do you still pay for his part of the rent sometimes?
M: Yeah, but I’m okay with that. After all, he does most of the housework. It’s just that he always beats the
drums for his band practice, and I need some peace and quiet.
W: I see. So what are your requirements, Tony?
M: This time I intend to live alone, so it doesn’t have to be big. It must be in the area of the downtown
though. Money isn’t the problem.
W: Okay. When are you planning to move?
M: At the end of this month. Can you find one sometime next week?
W: It won’t take that long. I can find you one by the end of this week.
M: Perfect!

Text 8 (126词) 超级老妈
M: Congratulations! You are the project manager now. I told you there was no need to worry.
W: Ha, yeah. I can’t expect it better. All the members were in agreement with the proposal today. I think
our team can carry it out shortly if everything goes well.
M: We’ve got to celebrate. Let’s take Kate to that fancy downtown restaurant and enjoy a feast
tonight!
W: How about this Sunday? I still need to work on some details of the schedule for the proposal.
M: Sure. You know what, honey? Kate really looks up to you. Her teacher Ms. Thompson told me
that she said you’re her super mom in one of her compositions. Honestly, I’m a little jealous.
W: Oh, that cute little thing.
Text 9 (150词) 奋发图强
M: Janice, did you see the sports magazine I had put beside the TV set?
W: Nope.
M: That’s strange. Where is it then? What are you doing on the Internet anyway?
W: Oh, I’m reading these articles about the island of Bali. It’s so beautiful. I suppose I should lie down
on the beach, drinking the refreshing coconut water right now. I just can’t stop imagining that happy
moment!
M: Well, if only you hadn’t spent so much on those bags.
W: Yeah, I’ve regretted it already.
M: Seriously, we should really make every penny count. Billy is going to school next year, and it’ll cost us
an arm and a leg. Actually I’m thinking of investing some money in stocks. And I’ll try my best to get a
promotion this year.
W: You’re right. I’m also looking for some part-time job which will make our financial situation
better.
Text 10 (200词) 游览史前巨石阵
M: Last year, I stayed in my uncle’s house in the U.K., and I was lucky enough to visit Stonehenge, the
prehistoric monument in England with my dad. I had known this place from my teacher, but when I
saw it in person, I was immediately struck by the size of it.
Our tour guide told us that according to historians, Stonehenge took in total 13 million hours of labor,
and that it was built in three different stages.
The first stage involved digging in the ground and didn’t involve putting up any stones. The first
stones were built in the second stage of construction. These stones, some of which weigh 4 tons,
were transported over land and on water from the mountains of South Wales, and it was a journey
of 240 miles!
The third stage saw the arrival of the bigger stones. These didn’t have such a long journey, maybe 25
miles or so. But they are much bigger. The heaviest of them all is an amazing 50 tons.
The tour guide said about 60 stones were originally used, but there aren’t that many left these days.
And no one is exactly sure why this monument was built.
