Hailing from Sweden, ‘plogging’ is a fitness craze that sees
- 36 - / 36
participants pick up plastic litter while jogging —— adding a virtuous(品德高尚的), environmentally driven element to the sport.
Plogging appears to have started around 2016, but is now going global, due to increasing awareness and fear over plastic levels in the ocean.
The appeal of plogging is its simplicity(all you need is running gear and a bin bag), and the feeling of getting fit while supporting a good cause. By adding regular squats(下蹲) (to pick up junk) and carrying weight to jogging, we can assume the health benefits are increased.
Running and good causes have always gone hand in hand --- just think of all the fundraising marathon runners do. But there couldn’t be a more on-trend way of keeping fit than plogging.
“Anything that’s getting people out in nature and connecting positively with their environment is a good thing,” says Lizzie Carr, an environmentalist who helped set up Plastic Patrol, a nationwide campaign to rid our inland waterways of plastic pollution.
The Plastic Patrol app allows users to map plastic anywhere in the world by collecting abandoned items, photographing them and uploading to the app, giving us a better knowledge of what
- 36 - / 36
sorts of plastic and which brands are being thrown out. “I’d urge all ploggers to get involved,” adds Carr.
Plogging isn’t the first fitness trend to combine running with a good cause. Here are some of our favourites:
• Running for the elderly
Good Gym’s idea is simple: go for a run, visit an elderly person, have a chat and some tea, and run back. Loneliness among the elderly is a growing problem in the UK, but with over 10,000 runs so far, Good Gym is finding a solution.
• Guide running
Guide runners volunteer their time to helping blind people get fit and active. By linking themselves together, the visually-impaired individual can feel safe while both work up a sweat.
• Cycling for the homeless
Start-up Stuart Delivery and the Church Housing Trust cooperated last year in bringing clothing and healthy food to the homeless. Deliveries are mostly made by bike, so those who deliver keep fit while helping rough sleepers.
56. What is plogging?
A. It’s a new way of cycling for fitness.
B. It’s a new way of protecting environment.
- 36 - / 36
C. It’s a volunteering activity of caring for the environment.
D. It’s a new mode of fitness in which people pick up plastic litters while jogging.
57. The reason why plogging is going global is that ___________.
A. people have stronger awareness and fear over the plastic pollution than before
B. more and more people want to do something for good causes
C. running and good causes have always gone hand in hand
D. a nationwide campaign is ridding our inland waterways of plastic pollution
58. What is NOT involved in plogging?
A. Running gear and a bin bag.
B. Going for a run and visiting an elderly person.
C. Regular squats and carrying weight to jogging.
D. The feeling of getting fit while supporting a good cause.
59. What does the author mean by saying “there couldn’t be a more on-trend way of keeping fit than plogging.”?
A. Plogging is not good for people’s health at all.
B. Marathon is more fashionable than plogging.
C. Plogging is the most fashionable way to keep fit.
D. Plogging is not a fitness trend to combine running with
- 36 - / 36
a good cause.
60. From the last part of the passage, we can know that ___________.
A. running for the elderly is a growing problem in the UK
B. guide running is the first trend to combine running with a good cause
C. plogging is the only fitness trend to combine running with a good cause
D. combining running with a good cause is becoming a most popular fitness trend

From 2010 to 2016, 42 % of the 8.1 million people who came to the United States from a foreign country were from Asia. 38% came from Latin America, 8.6% from Europe, and 8 % from Africa. This information comes from a new U.S. Census Bureau report.
For 2016, the U.S. Census Bureau said Asian Americans had the highest median annual income of all ethnic and racial groups. The median income for Asians was $81,431, about the same as 2015. That compared to a median income of $59,039 for all Americans. Pew said the U.S. Asian population is also better educated. About half of Asians 25 and older have a college degree. That compares to 30% among all Americans over age 25. Along with education,
- 36 - / 36
the Pew study also noted a high level of English language skill among Asians.
She said the information from the Census Bureau is somewhat misleading because it puts Asian Americans from many different backgrounds into one group. She suspects some Asian Americans do not receive public or private assistance because of the mistaken belief all Asian Americans are doing well economically.
The Asian American population now stands just less than 21 million people, which represents just over 6% of the American population. In a recent report, however, the Pew Research Center said Asian Americans likely will become the largest immigrant group in the United States. In 50 years, Asians should make up 38% of all U.S. immigrants, overtaking the current largest immigrant group, Hispanics(西班牙裔).
Asian American people come from more than 20 countries in East and Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Each has its own history, language and culture. Some of the biggest growth came from Bhutan, Nepal and Burma, the Pew center reported. But China continues to be the largest country of origin for Asian Americans, and India is number two. The other leading countries of origin for Asian Americans are the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, and Pakistan.
- 36 - / 36
William Frey, who researches urban populations, immigration and other issues for the Brookings Institution, said immigration policies that support educated immigrants are likely to help Asians. But he said changes in American immigration policy could affect immigration from Asia, as well as other parts of the world.
61. From the passage we can know ___________.
A. the Asian American population is now the largest immigrant group
B. the Asian American population now stands over 21 million people
C. Bhutan, Nepal and Burma are among the leading countries of origin for Asian Americans
D. the Asian American population is growing faster than any other major ethnic or racial group
62. What does the phrase median annual income in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. The average income in a year.
B. The total income in a year.
C. The income for all Asian Americans.
D. The income for all Americans.
63. What does Paragraph 2 tell us?
A. Only 30% of the Americans get a college degree.
- 36 - / 36
B. Every Asian Americans speaks English well.
C. Asian Americans lead in income and education.
D. All of the Asian Americans get more income than Americans.
64. What is Pew worried about?
A. That Asian Americans will mislead the Census Bureau.
B. That Asian Americans will not receive public or private help economically.
C. That some Asians dare not immigrate to America.
D. That more Asian Americans will leave America.
65. According to William Frey, we can infer that, ___________.
A. Asian Americans may benefit from the American immigration policies
B. the American immigration policy won’t change in the future
C. the number of immigrations to America will decrease in the future
D. immigration from Asia can’t be affected by the American immigration policies
D
Why do people take “selfies”(自拍)? Researchers at Syracuse University in New York tried to answer this question. They came up with some surprising answers.
- 36 - / 36
People who post selfies and use editing software to make themselves look better show behavior connected to narcissism, the Syracuse researchers said. Narcissists are people who think very highly of themselves, especially how they look.
Ji Won Kim, a doctoral student at the university, worked on the study. She said because social media can be superficial(表面的), it is a good place for people to “work towards satisfying their own vanity(虚荣).” By superficial, she means social media is mostly used by people to share unimportant information about their lives —— not deeply personal issues.
There are other reasons, besides narcissism, that people post selfies. People who post group selfies show a need for popularity and a need to belong to a group, the Syracuse University research found.
Other findings from the study include: There are no major differences on how often men and women post selfies and how often they use editing software. But men who post selfies showed more of a need to be seen as popular than women who posted selfies. Professor Makana Chock, who worked on the study, said selfies should not be seen as completely negative. She said some people feel “peer pressure” to post selfies. And some follow the popular belief that if there is no picture of an event or
- 36 - / 36
experience, it did not really happen.
The Syracuse researchers did their study. They questioned 260 people, aged 18 to 65, and almost evenly divided between men and women. To determine narcissism, people were asked if they agreed with personality traits connected to narcissism. For example, people were asked if they agreed with statements such as, “I like to be the center of attention” and “I like having authority over people.” To determine if those in the study had a need to be seen as popular, people were asked if they agreed with these statements:“It’s important that people think I’m popular” and “I often do things just to be popular with people at school.”
66. The underlined word “narcissism” in the second paragraph means ___________.
A. a need for popularity and a need to belong to a group
B. satisfying one’s own need to be seen more popular than others
C. one’s desire to share unimportant information about his or her own lives
D. psychologically admiring oneself too much, especially one’s own appearance
67. Which is NOT the reason for those who like taking selfies?
- 36 - / 36
A. A behavior connected to narcissism B. A desire to help others
C. A need for popularity D. A need to belong to a group
68. What can we know from the Fifth paragraph that ___________.
A. there are differences on how often men and women post selfies
B. selfies are seen as completely negative by many people
C. those who feel “peer pressure” usually like to post selfies
D. men who post selfies showed less of a need to be seen as popular as women
69. They questioned 260 people in order to ___________.
A. see if they like having authority over people
B. see if they want to be more popular than others
C. separate them from those who don’t like to post selfies
D. determine whether they are connected to narcissism or have a need for popularity
70. According to the passage, we can draw a conclusion that ___________.
A. some people post selfies merely to show they are popular
B. people who like to post selfies should go to see a doctor
- 36 - / 36
C. all of the people like to post selfies are connected to narcissism
D. it’s thought harmful for people to post their selfies on WeChat or Facebook

On March 14, the British physicist, Stephen Hawking, passed away at his home in Cambridge, England. Since then, many people have expressed their condolences(哀思) on social media, including British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web. “We have lost a great mind and a wonderful spirit,” Berners-Lee wrote.
Throughout modern history, there has perhaps never been a scientist as iconic as Stephen Hawking.
Hawking was an icon(典型) for many reasons, but he will be best remembered for his work in the field of science. Building on German scientist Albert Einstein’s work, Hawking explained his belief that space started with the Big Bang, and will end with black holes. This proposal kicked off a series of
- 36 - / 36
investigations, including into the origin of the universe itself.
His work in science aside, he also managed to overcome many difficulties in his personal life. While studying for a postgraduate degree in cosmology at Cambridge University, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 21. His illness left him paralyzed and he was told he only had a short time to live. However, as we all know, he went on to become one of the greatest minds the world has ever known.
Hawking leaves behind a great heritage. His signature book A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes, published in 1988, became one of the world’s best-selling science publications. And in 2014, UK actor Eddie Redmayne played Hawking in the movie The Theory of Everything, which tells the tale of the physicist’s life.
He may no longer be with us, but Hawking will continue to inspire the world for generations to come. As he once said himself, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”

because she never hears me the first time and I always have to say things again and again”. “Well,” the doctor answered, “go home and (13) stand about 15 feet from her and say something to her. If she doesn’t answer, move about 5 feet closer and say it again. Keep doing this so that we’ll get an idea about how serious her deafness is.”Sure enough, Murphy went home and did exactly as the doctor told him. He stood about 15 feet (14)from his wife in the kitchen as she was cutting some vegetables and said, “Betty, what’s for dinner?” He heard no answer. He moved about 5 feet closer and asked again. No answer. He moved 5 feet closer. Still no answer. He got fed up and moved right behind her, about an inch away, and asked again, “Betty, what’s for dinner?” Betty said, (15)“That’s the fourth time you asked me. They are meatballs.”
