The weather is fine. And now it is becoming more and more popular in many other countries. ‎ To build a rooftop garden, four things are necessary. You need a roof strong enough and four pieces of wood to build a box. Cut and collect some grass. Cover the roof with a thin piece of plastic. Then you build a box from the four piece of wood. The box has no top or bottom. It should be about ‎8cm deep. It can be as long and as wide as needed. Put the box on the plastic. Then fill in with the cut grass. Water the grass and push it down by walking on it. Now more and more people want to dive in the water to find the secret there. Scuba diving is a new sport today. It can take you into a wonderful undersea world. ‎ You will find many strange animals in the sea. Some are as large as a school bus. Many sea animals give out light in the dark and some have sharp teeth. ‎ During the day, there is enough light. Here, under the sea, everything is blue and green. ‎ When fish swim nearby, you can catch them with your hands. When you have bottles of air on your back, you can stay in deep water for a long time. However, you can't dive too deep. And you must be very careful when you dive in deep water. ‎ The deep sea is not an easy place to live in. It's cold, and it's dark, too. The deeper it is, the less sunlight there is. At about 3,000 feet, there is no light at all. It is very dark in the sea. Many fishes have no eyes. Some have big eyes. A few have eyes on one side. ‎ Besides the cold and the darkness, deep-sea animals face a third danger ―other animals. ‎ Animals eat! They must find food to eat. Many animals eat plants. However, some animals eat meat. This means these sea animals have two big jobs. They need to find animals as food, and they have to try not to become other animals' meal. ‎ ‎1. Now think how difficult it is to learn English when your brain is only the size of a bird's brain! That is what some birds can do. ‎ Many different kinds of birds can copy the sounds of language. African grey parrots are the best known for this. ‎ Every December in London, the National Cage and Aviary Bird Show tries to find the best "talking" bird in the world. One bird named Prudle stood out among the "talking birds". She won this prize for 12 years from 1965 to 1976. ‎ Prudle was taken from her nest in Uganda in 1958. She was sold to Iris Frost in Seaford, England. Prudle knew almost 800 words in English. ‎ Prudle was also the oldest bird in the world that lived in a cage. Ms. Frost took care of the bird until Prudle died in 1994. Prudle was 35 years old. ‎ A different kind of bird, not a parrot, named Puck was tested in 1993. I certainly do, and I feel that much of the world has got away from that. I see such a difference in New York City, for example, from when I first moved here more than 20 years ago: people rushing into lifts without giving those inside a chance to get off first, never saying thank you when others hold a door open for them, or please? When they want a classmate to hand them something. We get lazy, and we think that something like a simple thank you doesn't really matter. But in fact it can matter much. It is that no matter how nicely we dress, how beautifully we decorate our homes, or how lovely our dinner parties are, we can’ t be really stylish(漂亮的) without good manners(举止). ‎ In fact, I think of good manners as a kind of hidden beauty secret. Haven’ t you noticed that the kindest, most generous people seem to keep getting more beautiful? They become Cary Grant or Laurel Bacall right before our eyes. It's funny how that happens, but it does. ‎ Take the long- lost art of saying thank you . Like wearing a little lipstick(口红) or making sure your hair is neat(整洁的), getting into the habit(习惯) of saying thank you can make you feel better about yourself, and then you look better to everyone around you. ‎ ‎1. This kind of operation is known as robotic operation. ‎ Doctor Marescaux did the operation in an office in New York City last month, while a sixty - eight - year - old woman patient was in a hospital in Strasbourg, France. ‎ A doctor in Strasbourg got the patient ready . He placed medical tools and a small video camera in her stomach area(腹部). Doctor Marescaux in New York watched the patient on a video screen. Then he used the computer to send messages to the robot machine. ‎ The robot moved the tools that cut the woman's gall bladder (胆囊) away. The woman got well soon after the operation and left the hospital two days later. ‎ Experts say the main problem with such a robotic operation is based on high - speed telecommunications (通讯系统) between the doctor and the robot. Technology must be able to send a doctor's order to a robot to move the tool quickly. ‎ Experts also say a successful robotic operation will improve an operation. For example, the robot can make much smaller movements(动作) than a person can. A robot machine can turn tools in ways that a doctor's hand cannot. ‎ Doctors say such a robotic operation will make possible safer and better operations in the future. They say it will improve doctor training. It will also mean that doctors could do an operation on people in dangerous places far away. And it could mean that people could have operations done by top doctors without having to travel to the city where the doctors work. ‎ ‎1. "robotic operation" means "_______". ‎ A. a special kind of robot invented by doctors B. an operation done far away ‎ C. an operation done with the help of a robot D. something done to mend a robot ‎ ‎2. If we want to use the robot in the operation, we must .solve the problem of ______.‎ A. top doctors B. smaller movements ‎ C. doctor training D. high - speed telecommunications ‎ ‎4. If the smaller movement can' t be done by doctors in the operation, we may use_________ to solve it. ‎ A. a robot machine B. more tools C. a video camera D. telecommunications ‎ ‎5. Which of the following is NOT right? ‎ A. Robotic operation is good for doctor training. ‎ B. Robotic operation has been used in the USA. ‎ C. Experts speak highly of robotic operation. ‎ D. The robot is used to watch the patient clearly. ‎ ‎32‎ Do you know why different animals or pests (昆虫)have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.‎ Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they are to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.‎ If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters (猎人). This is because they have the colours much like the trees.‎ Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid (液体)when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over (散开),its enemies (敌人)cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.‎ ‎1.From the passage we learn that locusts________.‎ A. are small animals B. are easily found by birds C. are dangerous to their enemies D. change their colours to protect themselves ‎2.How can pests with different colours from plants keep out of danger?‎ A. Here is how it works. ‎ The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music. The tape recorder in Hiroyuki's bed plays a recording of his girlfriend. She whispers in a sweet voice, "Wake up, darling, please." A few minutes later, Hiroyuki hears a recording of his boss. His boss shouts, "Wake up at once, or you'll be late!" ‎ If you don't get up after the second recording, a mechanical "foot" in the bed will kick you in the head. The bed waits a few more minutes.
