How many books did you read last year? We pick some best books for you.
The Stars Beneath Our Feet
Writer: David Barclay Moore
Published (出版): September 19th, 2017
Just before Christmas, a boy named Lolly Rachpaul learns that his brother has been killed. This makes the holiday sad for Lolly and his mother. But when one of his mother’s friends gives Lolly a gift of Lego bricks (乐高积木), he uses them to build a city and turns his life around. The theme of this book is about finding creative ways to deal with sadness and loss in our personal lives. This is something that everyone has to learn while they are growing up.
Moxie
Writer: Jennifer Mathieu
Published: September 19th, 2017

I love my laptop computer as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. But I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices (设备) and truly communicate with others.
Once, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students believe that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students think that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth to that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can teach my students well.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly exchange ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for outstanding ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently.
I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free conversation is just too sweet to give up.
26. What were some of the students in the history class unhappy with?
A. the course material B. others’ misuse of technology
C. the writer’s class rule D. discussion topics
27. According to the writer, the use of new technology in the classroom may .
A. help students to better understand historical topics
B. keep students from doing independent thing
C. encourage students to have deep conversations
D. lead students to misuse the technology.
28. What does the writer wants to tell us?
A. Technology has different influences in different classes in college.
B. Technology makes it difficult to have true communication in class.
C. History classes can help students to develop their deep thinking.
D. It is time for him to give up his teaching method in history class.

What time of day do you feel most alert (清醒的)? Are you more of a morning person? Or does your brain need a few hours to get going? A lot of research suggests that we should pay attention to our body clock. It can tell us what time of day we are best able to perform, according to the Wall Street Journal (华尔街日报).
For example, many people work best later in the morning. This is because the body’s temperature takes time to go up through the day. Taking a warm shower when you wake up can help speed this up. And when the sun comes out for a few hours, it may help a lot, too.
▲ Morning people will rise early and work better early in the day. Evening people will wake later but their brain will work better toward the end of the day.
Research shows that we’re better at some activities at certain times of the day. Physical performance is at its best between 3 pm and 6 pm, so it’s better to exercise later in the day.
Between noon and 4 pm, people begin to get distracted (思想不集中的). This is partly because our brain becomes less alert after we eat a big meal. Research also shows that we become sleepy around 2 pm.
Finally, it is best to eat during our active periods. This allows our body to burn calories better and stops our blood sugar levels from getting too high. So a suitable time can help us keep healthy. It’s necessary for us to know about it.
29. Why do many people perform best later in the morning?
A. they can’t get up very early
B. the body’s temperature needs time to rise
C. they have to take a shower first
D. that’s when the brain wakes up
30. Which of the following is the best to fill in the blank?
A. But everyone’s body clock is different
B. And everyone’s body clock is almost the same
C. But everyone’s brain is different
D. And everyone’s brain is almost the same
31. According to the research, which of the following is TRUE?
A. It’s better to do exercise in the afternoon.
B. We perform better after eating a big meal.
C. Sleeping at 2 pm is not good for our health.
D. Our body burns calories better at night.

Many years ago, a French naturalist, Comte de Buffon, wrote some books about natural history. The books were a great success even though some critics(批评家)did not like them.
Thomas Jefferson did not like what Comte de Buffon had said about the natural wonders of the New World. It seemed to Jefferson that Comte de Buffon had spoken of natural wonders in America as if(好像)they were unimportant.
This troubled Thomas Jefferson. He was also a naturalist, as well as a farmer, an inventor, a
historian, a writer and a politician(政治家). He had seen the natural wonders of Europe. To him, they were no more important than those of the New World.
In 1788, Thomas Jefferson wrote about his home state, Virginia. While writing, he thought of its natural beauty and then of the words of Comte de Buffon. At that moment, Jefferson created a new word—belittle. He said, “Comte de Buffon believes that nature belittles her productions on this side of the Atlantic(大西洋).”
Noah Webster, the American word expert, liked this word. He put it in the English language dictionary in 1806, “Belittle—to make small, unimportant.”
Americans had already accepted Jefferson’s word and started to use it. In 1797, the Independent Chronicle(独立纪事报)used the word to describe a politician the paper supported. “It is an honorable man,” the paper wrote, “so let the opposition try to belittle him as much as they please.”
In 1872, a famous American word expert decided that the time had come to kill this word. He said, “Belittle shouldn’t become English. And more critical writers of America, like those of Britain, feel no need of it.”
This expert failed to kill the word. Today, belittle is used where the English language is spoken.
32. Thomas Jefferson was NOT a ______.
A. naturalist B. historian C. politician D. musician
33. We can suppose that Jefferson created the word “belittle” out of his ______.
A. anger B. excitement C. kindness D. sadness
34. What can we know about the word “belittle” from the passage?
A. It has already disappeared from the English language.
B. It had been used before it was put in the English language dictionary.
C. It is used to describe natural wonders now.
D. An American politician decided to kill this word in 1872.
35. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. How the word “belittle” came into being.
B. The argument about natural wonders.
C. Every word has a long history behind.
D. Noah Webster supported Jefferson’s idea.
第 II 卷(主观题 共 42 分)
四、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容填入一个最恰当的单词。每空一词。
People can often see beggars (乞讨者) sit by the side of a street with heads low as they pass by. Some ask people passing by for a small amount of money and some just sit and wait to be given money. A few use aggressive (有攻击性的) behavior to make money.
To solve the problem of aggressive begging, an alternative(供选择的) giving plan has been suggested. Ten blue money boxes will be placed in busy places with the encouragement that people don’t give money directly to beggars but instead, to give it to the local charity for the homeless.
Those who support this plan think it will be a good way to solve the problems of beggars. But the police are against the plan arguing that beggars who do not receive money may turn to criminals. The homeless charity believes the success of any plan will depend on its style. They think that imaginative and positive plans can help create local understanding and kindness instead of hardness. Most of the beggars dislike the plan because they think they will not get enough money from the boxes for their showers, food and clothes.
Begging is a big social problem both in developing and developed countries. Governments must play a big role in solving this problem. Training beggars to work and helping them to find proper jobs are especially true for developing countries where many low-skill jobs are offered. The general community should also be educated to see beggars not as dirty and dangerous, but as people who need understanding and help.

八、书面表达(10分)
Our society is developing fast. People are getting busier too. As a result, people try to relax in their free time. We students have different ideas of spending our free time.
Some classmates like surfing on the Internet and watching TV. They think they can get plenty of information through the Internet and make them relaxed. Besides, it is easy for them to communicate and play with classmates and even strangers without going outside.
Others think they should get close to their family, nature, and read a lot. In fact, they are not only good ways to get along better with family members, but also open up your mind and increase your knowledge.
I think we should do sports after school in order to keep healthy. What’s more, we also do after-class activities so that we will have a rich and colorful life.
