Where does the meat on our table come from? It usually comes from livestock like chickens, pigs and cows. However, did you know that meat can also be made in a lab? American company Just has announced* that lab-grown meat could be on some restaurant menus in the United States and Asia by the end of 2018.
Lab meat is sometimes referred to as clean meat. It is made using the stem* cells of living livestock. The
cells need to be grown in a lab for a few weeks. For example, making a hamburger patty* takes about nine weeks. This is faster than raising a cow, which usually takes over 20 weeks.
The first clean meat was a beef burger that was produced in 2013. But its taste was described as quite dry. How does clean meat taste now? People who tried the latest clean meat said that it tasted just like traditional meat.
Clean meat has other advantages. It is healthier than traditional meat. Meat producers can control what type of fat goes into the meat. They can produce clean meat that contains healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids. This kind of fat is good for people’s hearts.
Clean meat can also help to solve global warming. According to The Washington Post, about 14.5% of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions come from raising livestock. That’s more than the emissions from every car, train, ship and airplane in the world combined. It is predicted that using clean meat could lower greenhouse gas emissions by 96%.
However, the cost of making lab-grown meat is very high at present. With developing technology, scientists hope that they can make lab-grown meat in a cheap way and finally bring this kind of food to our plates.
29. According to the passage, lab meat is _______.
A. hamburger patties B. meat that is washed clean
C. meat from chickens and cows D. meat made and produced in a lab
30. How many advantages of lab meat are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five.
31. Why is clean meat healthier than traditional meat?
A. Because it is made of stem cells.
B. Because it is produced in clean labs.
C. Because producers can choose the fats that go into the meat.
D. Because producing clean meat doesn’t give off greenhouse gasses.
32. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It is cheap to produce lab meat.
B. It takes about weeks to make lab meat.
C. Lab meat has been on the restaurant menus.
D. The first lab meat tasted just like traditional meat.

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances* don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.
However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then make it more practical*. And, besides that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, which most
people won’t put in.
This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you give up before you ever become good at it.
When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some unusual talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.
No matter what you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction*, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Hard work won’t guarantee* you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.
33. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about _______.
A. the reasons for success B. the meaning of success
C. the standards of success D. the importance of success
34. The underlined word that refers to _______.
A. putting in more time B. succeeding in life
C. being good at something D. setting a practical goal
35. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because _______.
A. work makes him feel pain B. he is likely to enjoy his work
C. he gives up his work easily D. it takes a lot of time to succeed
36. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain that luck or talent leads to success.
B. To tell us that one cannot succeed without time and practice.
C. To show us that having a goal is the main reason to success.
D. To describe that successful people like to show their great skills.

I was hurrying to our basketball game one morning when Hillary Barnes, the most popular girl in school, stopped me. "Are you the twin who won the art competition?" she asked.
"No, that's Christine. I'm Katie." I said.
We were not the same. In fact, we were quite dissimilar. She could beat Snow White in a beauty contest! Compared to Christine, I felt like one of Cinderella's ugly stepsisters.
One Saturday Christine gave me a painting lesson because I was always trying to be artistic too. But I knocked over the vase of flowers. Instead of becoming angry, though, she turned the whole mess into a dreamy
masterpiece*. You could look at it five different ways and see five different things. With this excellent creation, she won First Prize in the art competition. I really envied her, but I knew it wasn't her fault. I was the one with wild, unmanageable hair and no talent.
Joining Christine's basketball team was my latest effort to be like her.
On the way to the gym, I've made up my mind to give my best performance in that day's game. As soon as we arrived at the gym, I couldn’t wait to warm up. "Christine, here!" I threw her a ball. It was too high and she missed it. The ball fell onto the recorder and broke it which was used to play the national anthem before each game.
I apologized as I picked up the broken pieces of the recorder. Coach looked at the mess and asked, "How are we going to play the song now?"
Christine suggested, "Let Katie sing it! She's always singing at home."
Coach asked. "Would you?" I found myself nodding.
Coach announced the national anthem and everyone stood. Standing before a microphone, I looked up to the flag. The notes seemed to flow from deep inside me, and my voice was clear. When I finished, the gym was silent. Then it was filled with applause. As the game started, teammates gave me the "thumbs up" sign.
The next morning Hillary Barnes stopped me in the hallway and asked, "Are you the twin who sings?"
"Yes, that's me." With smiles on my face, I walked to the classroom.
37. The author uses "Snow White" and "Cinderella's stepsisters" to show _______.
A. what the twins’ were like
B. who the most popular girl at school was
C. why Christine could win the art competition
D. how the twins were different in appearance
38. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Christine was unpleasant to her sister.
B. Katie took a balanced view of her sister.
C. Katie showed a lot of ability in painting too.
D. The masterpiece was painted by the two sisters.
39. Christine recommended* Katie to sing the song because she ________.
A. would like to help the coach
B. thought Katie should be punished
C. knew perfectly well what Katie was good at
D. wanted to repair the damage she had caused
