A
At the end of Grade 8,our class went to Washington D.C..For a group of 14-year-olds,this was a big deal!
The first day was so tiring;we could hardly remember where we were and what we were seeing. The next morning,we were off to see monuments(纪念碑),starting with Washington,Lincoln and Jefferson. We walked along the paths through trees. Then the Wall came into view—the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
As I inched closer to the Wall,I heard a bagpipe(风笛) in the distance, which seemed to show respect to the lives lost in the jungles of Vietnam.
We continued walking and felt surprised at the number of names carved in the black stone.I was determined to find a soldier with my last name, but my hunt was stopped when a man caught my eyes.He was kneeling(跪着) at the Wall,a single rose at his feet. His head was bowed and he was rubbing his fingers over one name.I thought how sad he was,and then moved on.
After a few minutes I found one with my last name, but my eyes returned to the kneeling man.He was still rubbing his fingers over the same name.He never knew I was watching him, lost in deep sorrow. It was time for me to leave the kneeling man and the Wall.On the way home,I couldn’t help thinking of the kneeling man and his sad face.I wasn’t sure of the effects of war before, but at that moment I realised how much that man suffered from losing his loved one.Maybe he was only one of so many families who experienced the same.
I never knew the full effects of war until I saw that man.I only know about war from history classes. The kneeling man taught me more about war and the effects it has on people than any history book.

(2016·辽宁高中联考)
When Armida Armato’s daughter,Alexia, came home from school one day last year keen to go on a school trip to Ecuador, she wasn’t too sure how to feel. She was happy that her daughter could experience something she never did as a teen but was fearful of letting her travel to such a remote part of the world.
Alexia was 16 at the time,a student at Westwood High School. The school sponsored a humanitarian trip for 26 students and two teachers to spend 18 days living in a mountain village to build a oneroom school.Even though Armato trusted her daughter, the other students and the teachers, she was worried about the side effects from the travel vaccines, possible accidents, and medical care.
Now that Alexia was home,Armato said she saw her daughter’s new maturity, greater confidence and independence.“This is the best thing I ever did,”Alexia said.“The experience was so eyeopening and lifechanging. You’re with people who are not as lucky as you are. They live in very poor conditions but they’re so happy and outgoing. You say,‘My God.I’m taking everything for granted back home.’”
She said they built a oneroom school from_scratch with no mechanical cement mixers. They used their hands, shovels and basic tools. She and another student lived with a local family in a small village about eight hours outside the capital,Quito.Despite the initial strangeness and knowing only basic Spanish, she said they grew very close and felt like a family.
Every year, groups of students at Montreal High School like Alexia pack their bags and fly off with classmates and teachers to developing countries where they volunteer for a variety of projects.

Liverpool is famed for many things—most especially The Beatles and its football team. But few would associate the city with one of the most famous political speeches in history. Yet tourism officials in the city have published the claim that Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” was written at a city centre hotel. The allegation(说法)
11
has been made in a guide to a major art event named Liverpool Discovers.
A map in the guide shows more than 20 locations where famous people were born along with places associated with celebrities(名人) and events in their life. The guide claims,“Martin Luther King visited his supporters in Liverpool three times, and the first draft of his famous speech ‘I Have a Dream’ is claimed to have been written at Adelphi Hotel.” The speech, delivered to civil rights campaigners on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington in 1963, is one of the most quoted texts in history and was a definitive moment in the American Civil Rights Movement and in the fight for racial equality.
Dr. King’s biographer, Godfrey Hodgson, said that the suggestion did not fit the facts. He said, “I don’t believe it. If he had been to Liverpool, there would have been massive media reports, as he would have been a big figure by then. Dr. King did visit the UK on a number of occasions but he was not in the UK around the time of this famous speech in 1963.” Prof. John Belcham, a history lecturer of University of Liverpool who wrote an 800year history of Liverpool in 2008, confirmed that he was unaware of any connection between Dr. King and the city.

Taylore is a kid who passes by to ride sometimes and help us with chores. Barely 15, she’s never short of advice, and one of her favorite pastimes is teasing me about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.
Last summer four of us rode down the trail behind our woods: my wife Karen, Taylore, Taylore’s friend Kendall and me. I was riding my 13-year-old, Tawny.
We were two miles from home when, for some unexplainable reason, I pushed Tawny into a gallop(飞驰). The other horses were anxious to catch up, and just like that, the race was on.
Taylore brushed past my left leg and, seconds later, Kendall went by on my right. I realized Tawny was covering ground faster than I’d ever seen her. She strained every muscle in her body to catch up with the girls. It was like a truck winding over a mountain road without brakes (闸). Part of me felt perfectly in control, while another part screamed that I wasn’t.
In half a mile I knew we’d be crossing the highway, so I prayed that the girls would be fine. I gave up calculating how long it might take before my horse would be tried enough to want to slow down.
I was just about out of answers when I saw the girls slowing in front of me. Their horses were relaxed and comfortable, not even breathing hard. Taylore’s face glowed. She gave me a high five. "Wow, you did well, "she said. " I knew you’d go fast when you were ready."
No one in the group had even broken a sweat, except me. I was still nervous from the crazy pace. My heart pounded too, but not from exercise. Karen claims I was showing off for the girls that day, and maybe she’s right. But I think I had something to prove. Because despite my wrinkles (皱纹), glasses and gray hair, I was feeling young at heart. And, like a horse on a warm summer day, I’m always ready to kick up my heels.
1. How did the race between the girls and the author begin?
A. His horse’s gallop made the other horses want to catch up.
B. He wanted to show off his riding skills for the girls.
C. They wanted to know whose horse could run fastest.
D. They teased him about being afraid to go too fast on a horse.
11
2. During the race, ___________.
A. the author’s horse outran the girl’s horses the whole time
B. the author was confident that Tawny was in control
C. the girls were so anxious to win that they sweated a lot
D. the author’s good performance took Taylore by surprise
3. When the race ended, the author’s heart pounded because ________.
A. he was feeling thrilled and young
B. it was really tough exercise for him
C. he was worried that the girls might be in danger
D. he felt quite embarrassed that he had lost the race
4. The phrase "kick up my heels" at the end can be replaced by _________.
A. devote myself
B. enjoy myself
C. accept my challenge
D. take part in running competition
