Education from My Father
My memories of my father are slim because he was so sick in the last years of his life. But there are 36 that I am often reminded of and which may have had some bearing on my love of 37 .
When I was small I was somewhat 38 of lightning and thunder. My father explained it. The explanation was in 39 that a child could understand but was basically correct. I gained a better 40 later, but I didn’t have to unlearn anything.
What he said was that there was electricity in the clouds 41 it travelled to the ground like a spark. When it travelled 42 the air it made the air so hot that it 43 . Then there was nothing where the air had been and the air all around rushed in to 44 the space. He
clapped his hands together very loud, 45 to be the air rushing in, and said that makes the thunder. When I hear thunder, I can still hear that 46 .
He explained why if it was cloudy in the winter the night was warmer than if it was 47 . It was one of those nights when the sky was full of stars: no moon, no town lights. But there were more stars than you could 48 and they had color too. He said that if there were no clouds, we had no blankets and were 49 to the universe. Our warmth was going to 50 the whole universe. When there were clouds, they were like blankets and we were not exposed to the universe. I 51 feel on the edge of space on a very clear night.
I am sure there were many other lessons that I 52 but no longer remember. What I did 53 , in general, was that there were explanations and that the more I understood them, the more comfortable the world was to live in. I was not taught that there were 54 but that there was understanding if you looked for it. This may be why I have always been 55 in science.

第三部分:阅读理解(共两节,40分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,共30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Until last spring, Nia Parker and the other kids in her neighborhood went to school on Bus 59. But as fuel prices rose, the school district needed to find a way to cut its transportation costs. So the school’s busing company redrew its route map, canceling Nia’s bus. Now Nia and her
neighbors travel the half mile to school via a “walking school bus”—a group of kids, supervised (监护) by an adult or two, who make the walk together.
Many parents are delighted to see their kids walking to school, partly because many did so themselves. According to a 1979 survey, nearly half of school kids walked or biked to school, compared with only 16 percent in 2011. Modern parents have been unwilling to let kids walk to school for fear of traffic, crime or simple bullying, but with organized adult supervision, those concerns have reduced.
Schools and busing companies are finding other ways to save. In rural areas where busing is a must, some schools have even chosen four-day school weeks. Busing companies instruct drivers to cancel extra stops from routes and to turn off the engine while idling(挂空挡). They are also using computer software to determine the most fuel-efficient routes, which aren’t always the shortest ones.
There could be disadvantages, however, to the busing cutbacks. If every formerly bused student begins walking to school, it’s an environmental win—but if too many of their parents decide to drive them instead, the overall carbon footprint can grow. Replacing buses with many more parent-driven cars can also increase safety risks. A 2011 report concluded students are 13 times safer on a school bus than in a passenger car, since buses have fewer accidents and withstand them better due to their size. And some students complain about the long morning hikes, particularly when the route contains a really big hill.
56. In regards to walking to school, modern parents seem much concerned with the _____.
A. safety of their kids B. kids’ physical strength
C. time spent on the way D. changes in the route
57. To save money, some schools choose to _____.
A. shorten the school week B. take the shortest routes
C. stop using school buses D. use fuel-efficient buses
58. Busing cutbacks may lead to _____.
A. fewer complaints about long morning hikes
B. more students taking public transportation
C. an increase in carbon dioxide emissions
D. a decrease in the safety of school buses

A metaphor is a poetic device that deals with comparison. It compares similar qualities of two dissimilar objects. With a simple metaphor, one object becomes the other: Love is a rose. Although this does not sound like a particularly rich image, a metaphor can communicate so much about a particular image that poets use them more than any other type of figurative language. The reason for this is that poets compose their poetry to express what they are experiencing emotionally at that moment. Consequently, what the poet imagines love to be may or may not be our understanding of love. Therefore, the poet’s job is to enable us to experience it, to feel it the same way as the poet does.
Let’s analyze this remarkably simple metaphor concerning love and the rose to see what it offers. Because the poet uses a comparison with a rose, first we must examine the characteristics of that flower. A rose is impressive in its beauty, its petals(花瓣)are nicely soft, and its smell is
pleasing. It’s possible to say that a rose is actually a feast to the senses of sight, touch, and smell. The rose’s appearance seems to border on perfection, each petal seemingly equal in form. Isn’t this the way one’s love should be?A loved one should be a delight to one’s senses and seem perfect.
However, there is another dimension added to the comparison by using a rose. Roses have thorns. The poet wants to convey the idea that roses can be tricky. So can love, the metaphor tells us. When one reaches out with absolute trust to touch the object of his or her affection, ouch, a thorn can cause great harm! “Be careful,” the metaphor warns, “Love is a feast to the senses, but it can overwhelm us, and it can also hurt us and cause acute suffering.” This is the poet’s understanding of love—an admonition (劝诫). What is the point?Just this: It took almost 14 sentences to clarify what a simple metaphor communicates in only four words! That is the artistry and the joy of the simple metaphor.
59. According to the passage, a metaphor is a ________.
A. description of two similar objects in a poetic way
B. literary device specially employed in poetry writing
C. contrast between two different things to create a vivid image
D. comparison between two different objects with similar features
60. As is meant by the author, thorns of a rose ________.
A. add a new element to the image of love
B. protect the rose from harm
C. symbolize reduced love
D. cause acute suffering
61. It can be inferred from the passage that a metaphor is _______.
A. difficult to understand B. rich in meaning
C. simple to use D. perfect in form
62. The main idea of this passage is that ________.
A. love is a rose in metaphor
B. a rose is a good image in poetry
C. a metaphor is a great poetic device
D. a poet should be careful to use a metaphor
C
On my first job as a sports editor for the Montpelier Leader Enterprise, I didn’t get a lot of fan mail, so I was intrigued by a letter plopped on my desk one morning. The envelope bore the logo of the closest big-city paper, the Toledo Blade.
When I opened it, I read:
“Sweet piece of writing on the Tigers. Keep up the good work.”
It was signed by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was a teenager (being paid the grand total of 15 cents a column inch), his words could not have been more exciting. I kept the letter in my desk drawer until it got rag-eared. Whenever I doubted I had the right stuff to be a writer, I would reread Don’s note and walk on air again.
Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don made a habit of writing a quick, encouraging word to people in all walks of life. “When I make others feel good about
themselves,” he told me, “I feel good, too.”
Why are upbeat note writers in such short supply? My guess is that many who shy away from the practice are too self-conscious. They are afraid they will be misunderstood, sound old-fashioned or flattering. Also, writing takes time and it is far easier to pick up the phone. The drawback with phone calls, of course, is that they do not last. A note attaches more importance to our well-wishing. It is a matter of record, and our words can be read more than once, appreciated, and treasured.
What does it take to write notes that lift spirits and warm hearts? Perhaps just a desire and a willingness to express our appreciation. The most successful people write notes that are short on words and long on feeling, sincere, short, specific, and usually spontaneous in nature.
It is difficult to be spontaneous, however, when you have to hunt for letter writing materials; so, keep paper, envelopes, and stamps close at hand, even when you travel. Fancy stationery is not necessary; it’s the thought that counts.
So, who around you deserves a note of thanks or approval? A neighbor, your librarian, a relative, your mate, a teacher, or your doctor? You do not need to be poetic. If you need a reason, look for a milestone, the anniversary of a special event you shared, a birthday, or holiday, and do not hold back your praise. Such words as: “greatest,” “smartest,” “prettiest” make us all feel good. Even if your praises run a little ahead of reality, remember that expectations are often the parents of dreams fulfilled.
63. On seeing the letter on the desk, the author felt _____.
A. annoyed B. curious C. doubtful D. shocked
64. According to the author, many people don’t write upbeat notes mainly because they are _____.
A. afraid of being out of date B. too shy to flatter others
C. prepared to make phone calls D. too concerned about what others think
65. It can be learned from the last paragraph that ______.
A. praises often run ahead of reality
B. praises help in pursuing a dream
C. parents often write upbeat notes
D. parents expect children’s success
66. What might be the suitable title for the passage?
A. The Power of a Positive Note B. Notes Help to Fulfill Dreams
C. The Necessity of Writing Notes D. Note or Phone, Your Own Choice
D
Homeownership has let us down. For generations, Americans believed that owning a home was undoubtedly good. Our political leaders hammered home the point. Franklin Roosevelt held that a country of homeowners was “unconquerable.” Homeownership could even save babies, save children, save families and save America. A house with a lawn and a fence wasn’t just a nice place to live in or a risk-free investment; it was a way to transform a nation. No wonder leaders of all political types wanted to spend more than $100 billion a year on subsidies and tax breaks to encourage people to buy.
But the dark side of homeownership is now all too apparent: Indeed, easy lending
stimulated by the cult of homeownership may have triggered the financial crisis. Housing remains a drag on the economy. Existing-home sales in April dropped 27% from the prior month, worsening fears of a double-dip. And all that is just the obvious tale of a housing bubble and what happened when it popped. The real story is deeper and darker still.
For the better part of a century, politics, industry and culture lined up to create a fetish of the idea of buying a house. Homeownership has done plenty of good over the decades; it has provided stability to tens of millions of families. Yet by idealizing the act of buying a home, we have ignored the downsides. In the bubble years, lending standards slipped dramatically, allowing many Americans to put far too much of their income into paying for their housing. And we ignored longer-term phenomena too. Homeownership contributed to the hollowing out of cities and kept renters out of the best neighborhoods. It fed America’s overuse of energy and oil. It made it more difficult for those who had lost a job to find another. Perhaps worst of all, it helped us become casually self-deceiving: By telling ourselves that homeownership was a pathway to wealth and stable communities and better test scores, we avoided dealing with these frightening issues head-on.
Now, as the U.S. recovers from the biggest housing bust(破产)since the Great Depression, it is time to rethink how realistic our expectations of homeownership are—and how much money we want to spend chasing them. Many argue that homeownership should not be a goal pursued at all costs.
67. Political leaders wanted to spend money encouraging people to buy houses because ______.
A. owning a home was undoubtedly good
B. homeownership was unconquerable
C. houses could save families and America
D. homeownership could shape a country
68. The underlined sentence in Para. 2 means ______.
A. homeownership has quite a lot of bad effects
B. there might be another housing breakdown in the U.S.
C. the existing-home sales will keep decreasing in the U.S.
D. the result of homeownership is much worse than it appears
69. It can be inferred from Para. 3 that ______.
A. it is hard for Americans to get a home loan [来源:学。科。网Z。X。X。K]
B. it is the way to wealth to have one’s own house
C. many Americans choose to live out of urban areas

“Look it up in the dictionary” is the usual comment when people are in doubt about the meaning or spelling of a word. Dictionaries are considered the final authority on these matters as well as on pronunciations and other facts about a word.
Until a few hundred years ago, however, people could not “look it up” because there were
no English dictionaries. The ancient Greeks and Romans and the scholars of the Middle Ages had made lists of Latin and Greek words. 71 The first great English dictionary listing both common and uncommon words was written by Samuel Johnson in 1755.
In America, the most famous name in dictionary writing is that of Noah Webster. He stressed American rather than British ways of speaking. His great dictionary, which first appeared in 1828, has been republished many times. 72 The latest edition is still considered “the” dictionary. It defines over 450,000 words, including radar, television and many others undreamed of by Webster.
73 The huge ones that rest on stands in libraries are called unabridged, meaning “not shortened.” They tell not only a word’s meaning and spelling but also its pronunciation, origin, history, part of speech, grammatical forms, and ways of use. The smaller ones do not provide all this information.
74 A bilingual dictionary, such as a Spanish-English dictionary, translates words from one language into another. A thesaurus lists other words that mean the same as each listed word. A gazetteer lists place names, and a glossary is a small dictionary in a book defining technical words in that book. There are also dictionaries of scientific terms and ones on many other topics. There is even a dictionary of slang. 75 The dictionary is one of our most valuable language tools.
A. Each time, it has been updated.
B. General dictionaries are not the only kind.
C. Thus there are many kinds of special dictionaries.
D. In a general dictionary, each word may have multiple meanings.
E. Dictionaries that list all kinds of words are known as general dictionaries.
F. Over the previous 150 years more than 20 dictionaries had been published.
G. But it was not until 1604 that a book of uncommon English words appeared.

三、One possible version:
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am Li Hua from Class One, Senior Two. I’m writing in reply to the notice for host families. I think I have several reasons to accommodate one foreign friend. First, I believe my English is good enough to communicate with foreigners. Also, my good communication skills enable me to keep a good relationship with others. As for accommodation, my family live in a 4-room apartment and there is always a spare room for the guest. In addition, my home is very convenient in transportation. Its location makes it easy to take either subways or buses to most places. I have also got support from my parents, who said yes without hesitation when informed of my wish.
I would appreciate it if my application is taken into account.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

三、Possible Version 1
In the picture, along the tracks come three runners. The one who takes the lead wears a smile on his face, despite the great distance he has covered. The other two, with sweat streaming down their faces, are clearly tired from running.
What the picture tries to convey is that success belongs to those who can keep up a good state of mind faced with life challenges. The smile on the face of the runner in the lead suggests that he enjoys the race, regardless of the hard work he has to devote. This definitely makes him stand out among the other competitors, who wear serious and painted expressions on their faces. Life is sometimes like a race with tracks stretching long. A good state of mind can actually bring out our best.
Possible Version 2
In the picture, three boys are running along the tracks. The first boy is running with ease and confidence. The last boy falls far behind, but he is still going all out for the race, with his teeth clenched.
It dawns on me that whatever situation we find ourselves in, never should we lose hope but press ahead. Standing a slim chance of catching up with the other two ahead of him, the persistent boy in the last place shows no sign of giving up and works even harder. His perseverance demonstrates a profound meaning in life. It often happens that hard as we may try, our efforts do not yield satisfying results. However, as long as we persevere in our determination and efforts, we are the champion of our own life “race”.

M: Hello, may I speak to Mrs. Shaw, please?
W: Yes, this is Anne Shaw speaking.
M: Hi, Mrs. Shaw. This is Eric from London.
W: Hi, Eric. How can I help you?
M: I'm arranging our next project team meeting, and I just want to check some possible dates with you.
W: Fine, let me just get my diary. Okay, which dates are you looking at?
M: I've spoken to the others, and they will be available in the first, third and fourth week of May. Which one would you prefer?
W: Well, I prefer the last week if possible.
M: I think there is no problem with that.
W: OK, great, by the way, where is the meeting taking place this time?
M: It was going to be in London. But I spoke to Carlos in Mexico City, and he suggested Chicago. He thinks it will be more convenient for most of the team.

M: That's a good idea.
Test 7
W: This is the 6 o’clock international news. And first the headlines. In Australia, the Prime Minister has promised to help the drought stricken farmers in the northern part of the country who haven’t seen rain for nearly two years. And in Singapore a group of school children are successfully rescued from a plane which landed in the sea shortly after take-off. Next, transport workers in Paris are on strike over wages and the strike looks set to spread to other cities.
The details. Australia Prime Minister has promised today that he will make two hundred and fifty million dollars available to help the drought stricken farmers who have not seen rain for years get through the next five years. Farmers are to receive financial assistance to help see them through the worst drought in over 50 years. Many farmers feel that while the money is welcome, it has come too late to save them and are angry that the government did not act sooner…

W: Excuse me. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?
M: No, I guess not.
M: Great! This is for a student council report; we want to find out what students think of the campus food service. First, how often do you eat in the cafeteria?
M: Almost every day.
W: What’s your general impression of the food here?
M: Well, people complain a lot, but basically I think it’s OK. The vegetables are usually overcooked, but I mean they have to feed hundreds of people here. You are not going to get something freshly prepared just for you.
W: If I just put down generally satisfactory, is that OK?
M: Sure.
W: So you think the other things, like soup and dessert are okay?
M: Yeah, that’s about right.
W: Is there anything you’d like to change about the cafeteria?
M: Yes, the hours. Sometimes it’s a real rush for me to get back here before 6:30.
Text 10
W: So… what time do you start your work, Steve?
M: I start my work at 9 in the morning, and I keep working for 6 hours till 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Then I start again at 5:30 pm and work until 10:30 pm. Six days a week. So I have to work very odd hours.
W: And do you have to work on the weekend?
M: Oh, yes, that’s our busiest time. I get Wednesdays off.
W: What are the things you have to do, and the things you don’t have to do?
M: Eh, I don’t have to do the washing-up, so that’s good. I have to wear white and I have to keep everything in the kitchen totally clean.
W: How did you learn the profession?
M: Well, I did a two-year course at college. In the first year, we had to learn the basics. And then we had to take the exams.
W: And what’s the secret to being good at your job?
M: Attention to detail and you have to love it. You have to show passion for it.
W: And what are your plans for the future?

Mark Twain was my hero when I was nine because that was when I discovered Tom Sawyer. But even at the height of my admiration, I couldn’t agree with him that Anne, the main character in Anne of Green Gables, was “the dearest and most loveable child in fiction since the best-known Alice”. I had read Anne of Green Gables as well as Tom Sawyer, and she had made me as sick as a dog.
Another Mark Twain’s quote will explain my problem. He said, “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant (无知的) that I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” I gradually understood his words as growing up. When I picked up the book again a few years later, I too was astonished at how much it had improved—and shortly afterwards shocked by the fact that not only could I be a fool in all sporting, artistic and practical matters, I could also be so when it came to reading too.
On rereading, then, I learned that Anne is indeed a dear and most lovable child. I couldn’t help adoring the girl who insists that her name be spelled with the “e” instead of Ann as she believes that is “so much more distinguished.” She is a brave and determined survivor of a severe upbringing who has refused to let her circumstances crush her spirit. She arrives at Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert’s farm with everything unfavorable—orphaned, unwanted and her biggest trouble of red-hair and freckled (有雀斑的) face. However, she gets along well, through her strange way of seeing things, through her honest love of beauty and lovable attempts to master her unreasonable desires. She finally wins over the Cuthberts, their neighbors and millions of readers who have met her over the 101 years since the book was first published.
When I settle down with it these days, I’ve come to see the truth in Mark Twain’s praise for the book, and this reminds me of the great truth that you are never too young to start rereading.
59. According to Paragraph 1, we can know the writer ______.
A. believed Anne to be loveable
B. admired Mark Twain because of Anne
C. regarded Tom Sawyer as the dearest child
D. disagreed with Mark Twain’s opinion on Anne
60. By referring to Mark Twain’s remark on his father, the writer wants to prove that ______.
A. people’s attitude may change
B. learning can change a person
C. the relationships between people can improve
D. young people never make correct judgments
61. The reason why the writer admires Anne now is that _______.
A. she is an ambitious girl
B. she is welcome by the readers
C. she adapts to her environment well
D. she changes her name to make it easy to remember
62. The writer’s purpose of writing the passage is to ______.
A. recommend Anne of Green Gables
B. express admiration towards Mark Twain
C. prove that people’s first impression can not be right
D. encourage us to reread the books that we may not like at first

Why texting harms your IQ
The regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻). That is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the user’s IQ. This rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as “infomania”. The research conducted by Hewlett Packard, the technology company, has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men.
It is concluded that too much use of modern technology can damage a person’s mind. It can cause a constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand. The report also added that, in a long term, the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life. At a microcellular level, the complex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences.
Too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a person’s mind, but to their social relationship. 1100 adults were interviewed during the research. More than 62 per cent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. Half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so. It is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting one’s characteristics. Nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude.
The effects on IQ were studied by Dr Glenn Wilson, a psychologist at University of London. “This is a very real and widespread phenomenon,” he said. “We have found that infomania will damage a worker’s performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life. Companies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working.”
63. We can learn from the passage that “infomania” ______.
A. has a positive influence on one’s IQ
B. results in the change of part of the brain
C. lies in the problem of lack of concentration
D. is caused by too much use of modern technology
64. The research mentioned in the passage is most probably about ______.
A. the important function of advanced technology
B. the damage to one’s brain done by unhealthy habits
C. the relevance between IQ and use of modern technology
D. the relationship between intelligence and working effectiveness
65. The underlined word “scrutinized” probably means “______”.
A. examined carefully B. copied patiently C. corrected quickly D. admitted freely
66. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B.

It took me more than 10 years to realize that the world has no shortage of fashion (时尚) designers who have the ability to make trendy and elegant garments, but that it is badly in need of, simply, clothes designers. My own definitions would set fashion and clothing greatly apart. It is a fact that, in the shopping malls, there are plenty of beautiful garments whose unpredictability makes our life colorful and interesting. You are almost convinced: You can buy whatever you dare to think.
There is no doubt that fashion designers are usually with high qualifications. They study fashion trends, select colors, and make sure the final production of their designs is done properly. However, as experience grew with age, my attraction to arts became ever stronger. I have a strong desire for clothing to stand as does paint to the painter, as does stone to the sculptor, as a simple and particular language of an individual creation, which draws the audience from an appreciation of the surface to deeper thoughts with the world of the soul. I believe that the most meaningful creative motives should arise through caring for other people, the great care of humanity—a concern for human feeling and spirituality. This includes love, but it is bigger than
love, and it is unconditional. I believe the greatest works of art can touch the deepest and strongest parts of human feelings and the world of the spirit, and only these works can be the memories of history, preserving the most valuable feelings that have ever existed, and inspiring a greater awareness of ourselves.
I am not satisfied if people only appreciate clothing if it merely satisfies their desire. I believe clothing could be a specific creative language for communicating ideas and thoughts, for inspiring you and shaping your behavior. Those clothes fashioned out of necessity possess a power that can continue to exist across the ages. This is what I have tried to achieve, the clothing to return to its original simplicity, the clothing to help people regain the natural sense. The true fashion today should not follow the trends. It should instead uncover the extraordinary in the ordinary, for I believe the pleasure you get from the clothing is not its price, but its spirit.

A. lack of imagination B. deep in thought
C. unproductive D. trendy

A. a very important part of the spiritual world
B. what can be achieved through the works of hand
C. one of the most meaningful creative motivations
D. a form of concern for human feeling and spirituality
69. The writer indicates that the primitive clothes are made as a result of ______.
A. respect for nature B. spiritual value

70. What is the main idea of the passage?

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Do It Yourself
“Do it yourself (DIY)” is a term used to describe building or repairing of something without the aid of experts. It came into common usage in the 1950s in reference to home improvement projects which people might choose to complete independently. 71 It promotes the ability of the ordinary person to learn to do more than what he thinks is possible.
From the late 20th century, we have given in to the convenience of being told the “right way” to do things because it is convenient. 72 We have organized shopping, organized entertainment, and even organized marriage. With the development of industrial revolution, we have had our clothes and furniture made with the help of the machine. Our food supply has left our backyards and ventured (冒险) into the factory. Things get cheaper and easier to find, but we buy as one and eat as one.
DIY culture holds a powerful belief: 73 That statement may seem like the DIY movement is quite self-centered, but there is great evidence that the opposite is true. By creating with our own minds and hands, by relying on what has come before and projecting what will be, we have become open to many possibilities. 74
People can both create to serve their own needs and find the value in what others create. In other words, we can both learn how to make what we desire ourselves and consume goods made by others. 75 But the joy of DIY culture is how we begin to find our interconnectedness, for example, our talents of swimming and skating with the talents of others in our community.
A. Almost everything in our life has been arranged in a system.
B. DIY provides us with some particular requirements and tools.
C. People can have what they want if they can learn to make it themselves.
D. We question the lifestyle based on our values and fashioned with our hands.
E. Of course the danger of DIY culture is that we try to become entirely self-confident.
F. In recent years, DIY has taken on a broader meaning that covers a wide range of skill sets.
G. We can sew our own clothes, grow vegetables, and do other activities that put us in touch with the processes of life.

四、One possible version:
In the picture, a man is doing high jump, but the crossbar is fixed too high for him and he is trying to get over it by jumping from a stool. What a ridiculous scene!
The picture wants to remind us of setting a goal based on one’s ability, but not to cheat for an unreasonable one. The bar is too high for the man, so he tries to get over it by jumping from a stool. Obviously, what he does is nothing but cheating. In fact, if he sets the bar at a proper height, he is sure to make it without the stool. So it is with our life. Some people set a goal beyond their ability and then try to achieve it in a dishonest way, which should be strongly criticized. So we should set an attainable goal and achieve it honestly. That’s true success.

M: Is he still doing that?
W: Yes, he is very famous now.
(Text 2)
W: Hi, is there something I can do?
M: You see, the sun is too strong. I’d like to get a pair of glasses to protect my eyes.
W: All right. What price range do you have in mind?
(Text 3)
W: I hear you’ve invented a tool which lets computer users use their feet to control the mouse.
M: Yes. People are trying many ways to free their hands from the mouse, such as using their
eyes, but have been unsuccessful. So I tried the feet.
(Text 4)
W: Have you seen the purse, honey?
M: Your purse? No. Why the purse? We’re not going shopping anyway.
W: I know. But our opera tickets are in it. And we have only one hour left.
M: Did you have it when we left the parking lot?
(Text 5)
M: Did you get to watch the play Sunshine in the Capital Theatre yesterday?
W: Yes, it couldn’t be better. But I didn’t like the people there. They always made noises.
(Text 6)
W: How can I help you, Sir?
M: I need a business suit.
W: We have business suits in three different price ranges. They are on Sales items, Designer Line, and Best-buys.

W: Sales items start at 30 dollars. They go up as high as 100 dollars. The Designer Line items, which are personal and fashionable, are between 400 and 1500 dollars.
M: Too much for me. How about Best-buys?
W: Best-buys are between 50 and 500 dollars.
M: OK. I’ll see them first.
W: Then you can go straight down to the first floor, and then make a right turn.
M: Thank you so much.
(Text 7)
M: Hi, Wanda. Where are you rushing?
W: I’m heading for a meeting of the ski club. It starts in a few minutes.
M: The ski club?
W: Yes. Do you want to come along?
M: What does the ski club do?
W: Well, you get to know other people who enjoy skiing, listening to lectures and programs on skiing techniques and equipment, and—best of all—plan skiing trips.
M: It sounds great, but I don’t know exactly how to ski very well.
W: It doesn’t matter. You just want to learn how to ski.
M: That sounds like my kind of club. I guess I’ll come along with you and try it.

(Text 8)
Hello! My name is Art. I’m 74 years old and I live in a retirement community with my wife Kate. I retired about twelve years ago from the bicycle business. I was in the bicycle business for thirty-five years. Twenty of the thirty-five years I ran my own business. After I decided to sell my business, I became an advisor. I worked as an advisor for five years and then I retired. The
retirement community I live in requires you to be forty-eight years old or older. In the community I participate in many activities, such as oil painting and watercolor painting, and handmade pots. My major activity, however, is golf. If weather permits, I play every day. We have a golf course in the community, and since I play more often than I used to before I retired, my game is improved very much.
(Text 9)
M: Hello, Campus Daily, Advertising Department. This is Mark speaking.

W: OK. It should read “Female roommate wanted for pleasant, sunny two-bedroom apartment on Elliewood Avenue. Three blocks from the university. Share rent and gas and electricity bills. Available September 1. Call between 4 and 9 pm and ask for Cecilia.”
M: Fine. And what about the other one?
W: That one I’d like under “Furniture for Sale”, and I’d like to read “Matching blue and white sofa and easy chair, excellent condition, $350 of best offer. Call between 4 and 9 pm and ask for Cecilia.”
M: Anything more?
W: No, that’s enough. Thank you.
(Text 10)
W: Excuse me. I think there’s something wrong with my camera. It can’t seem to put the film on any more.
M: Let me take a look. Um… it looks like something is in need of replacement. Would you be able to leave it here for a week? We’re very busy at the moment but I’m sure we can repair it in the next few days. Is that satisfactory?
W: Oh. But I was hoping to get it done on the spot.
M: Well, we’ll need to order the replacement parts from the camera supplier in Newtown. I’m sorry. That’s the best I can do.
W: All right then. That’ll be OK. Do you need any details?
M: Yeah, just a few. What’s your name?
W: Alex Crystal. C-R-Y-S-T-A-L.
M: And address?
W: 65 Baron Road, Howell.
M: And what’s your telephone number?
W: 68764632. If I’m not at home, please leave the message with Miss White living next door.
M: OK. And what’s her number?
W: 68753926.
M: Good. I think we’ve got enough details. Now, the camera will be on Thursday, 5 of April.
W: Sorry. I can’t pick it up until the following Tuesday.

I recently had dinner with someone who told me that one of his best friends had been killed in a private plane crash, and something happened at the memorial service that he’ll never forget. He shared the story with me.
At the memorial service, his friend’s wife walked to the platform to speak to the gathering. She said a friend had asked her the best memory she had of their life together. At the moment, she had been too sad to answer, but she had thought about it since and wanted to answer the question.
They were in their late forties when he died, and she began talking about a time in their life almost twenty years earlier. She had quit her job to obtain her master’s degree, and her husband never hesitated in his support.
He held down his own job and also did the cooking, cleaning, and other housework while she studied for her degree.
One time they both stayed up all night. She was finishing her paper, and he was preparing for an important business meeting. That morning, she walked out of her study, leaned against the door by the stairs, looked at her husband downstairs and just thought about how much she loved him. She knew how important this meeting was to his future, and she was feeling guilty that she didn’t even have time to make his breakfast. He took his briefcase and hurried out. She heard the garage door open and close, but much to her surprise, she heard it open again about thirty seconds later. From above, she watched her husband dash into the house and walk over to the forgotten coffee table. Marking the surface of it with his finger through the dust with the words “I love you”, then he raced back to his car.
The new widow then looked out at her audience and said, “John and I had a wonderful life together. We have been around the world several times. We’ve had everything money can buy...but nothing comes close to that moment.”
Hearing this, I was deeply moved. “Love makes life worthwhile.”

Dear Volunteers,
The service you will provide to elderly individuals in Abilene as a Meals on Wheels volunteer is deeply appreciated. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for the many miles you will travel and all of the hours you will contribute to help make this one of the best programs in the entire state.
We have our staff members make a home visit before adding each person to the program and try to visit everyone at least once every year. That is hardly enough, and we depend on your contact a great deal! It is important that you report back when you do not get an answer to your knock on the door. The person inside may be hurt or ill. They may be in hospital or out of town and fail to inform us. If they are frequently absent, we may need to determine if they still need meals.
If you find someone with a medical emergency, please call 911 to request medical assistance,
and then call the Meals on Wheels office. If you find someone who needs assistance other than for a medical emergency, please call the Meals on Wheels office at 6725050, and we will try to find the appropriate agency or individual to call.
Let us know when a certain person needs extra food. We have a food preparation room of shelf stable items to share with them. Please feel free to take a few magazines when you deliver meals. Many of those we serve cannot afford magazines and enjoy reading. If someone is interested in getting books from the Abilene Public Library, let us know. We can sign them up for the Books on Wheels program. Call if you smell gas strongly when you deliver meals, or if someone needs a space heater, a blanket, or an electric fan. Please convey all needs to us, and we will try to see that they are met. Some of the elderly people who we offer our service may have cancers, liver diseases, AIDS, etc. If you do not want to deliver meals to the people with certain types of health problems, such as these, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Betty L. Bradley, LBSW,
Executive Director

When it comes to success in business and success in life, there are few qualities as important as confidence.
People naturally have different levels of confidence. Some have a higher level of confidence than others do, but even those whose confidence is lacking can learn to build their level of confidence and reach their most important goals. Increasing self confidence is one of the most common reasons people give for seeking the help of psychologists and other professionals.
One of the many places where a greater level of confidence is useful is in the workplace. We all know how difficult it can be, for instance, to ask the boss for a raise. This process can be extremely difficult for those who lack confidence in their own abilities. After all, if you are unsure about your own abilities, how will you ever convince your boss that you deserve more money for the work you do?
Even if you are not asking for that big raise, having plenty of confidence in your abilities is important to success. If you are certain of your abilities, chances are that those around you, whether they are your coworkers, your colleagues or your superiors, will see that confidence, and that will help to assure them that you are the best at what you do.
Being thought of as the person to go to, and being seen as an expert in your chosen field, is naturally very important to success on the job. If you can make yourself the person people go to for guidance and advice, you will help to protect yourself from the ever present danger of downsizing. After all, if you are a recognized expert at the office, you will be regarded as an indispensable member of the team.
Having a high level of confidence, after all, does not mean overlooking the places where you could improve. Knowing what you do well and where you need help will help you enjoy increased success and confidence.
63.What is the passage mainly about?
A. The influence of confidence on one’s life.
B. The importance of confidence to success.
C. The difference of people’s confidence.
D. The judgment on one’s confidence.
64. Psychologists and other professionals can offer help to those _____.
A. who think their goals are hard to reach
B. who expect to give guidance to others
C. who want to ask the boss for a raise
D. who dream to be recognized experts
65. What does the underlined word “indispensable” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. important B. attractive C. outgoing D. energetic
66. What message does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. To overlook one’s disadvantages.
B. To make full use of one’s advantages.
C. To have great confidence in one’s abilities.
D. To make objective evaluations of one’s abilities.
D
On March 28th, the New York Times will begin charging all but the most infrequent users to read articles online.
In a letter to readers, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., the publisher of the paper, laid out the details of the paywall, which he said will go into effect immediately in Canada and on March 28th for the rest of the world. He called the move “an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in the Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform.”
Sulzberger said that readers will be able to read 20 articles per month at no charge. Once they click on the 21st piece, however, they’ll be presented with three payment options: $15 for four weeks of online and mobile application access, $20 for access to the site and the iPad application, or $35 for access to everything. People who already receive the printed paper through home delivery will enjoy free and unlimited access to the Times on all platforms.
These details largely agree with earlier reports on how the paywall would work. The Times had made it clear that it did not want to imitate the total paywalls put into effect by papers such as The Times of London and Newsday, which block access to all contents unless the reader pays.
The paper also signaled that it wants to stay relevant in the social media world. According to Sulzberger’s announcement, people who come to the Times site from Facebook, Twitter or from blogs will be able to read those articles even if they have gone over their monthly limit.
However, Sulzberger said that a limit will be placed on “some search engines,” meaning that after readers have accessed a certain number of articles from search engines, any further
articles they access from there will be added to their monthly count. It was reported that the only search engine that will be affected this way is Google, where there will be a five-article limit. This marks a clear attempt by the Times to close what could be a giant loophole(漏洞), since so much online traffic is directed through Google. But it also presents a risk for the Times for the same reason.
Sulzberger seems well aware of the risk. “The challenge now is to put a price on our work without walling ourselves off from the global network,” he said, adding that the Times must “continue to engage with the widest possible audience.”
67. The author’s main purpose in the text is to ________.
A. describe research findings B. make advertisements
C. report a piece of news D. suggest a solution
68. Why will the Times charge their online readers?
A. It wants to stay relevant in the social media world.
B. It has too many readers coming from the other sites.[
C. It is trying a way to offer better service to its readers.
D. It is seeking new financial sources for its development.
69. Who will be limited to the New York Times articles?
A. Those subscribing to the printed newspapers.
B. Readers clicking through from Facebook.
C. Those using Google research engine.
D. Readers paying $35 a month.
70. What challenge may the paywall bring to the New York Times?
A. It may bring the Times more competition with the other media.
B. It may stop the Times connecting to the global network.
C. It may result in huge drops in papers’ online readership.
D. It may block the readers from the other websites.

A study showed eating even a little less salt could greatly help the heart. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The scientists used a computer model to predict how just three grams less salt a day would affect heart disease in the United States.
The scientists said the results would be thirteen percent fewer heart attacks, eight percent fewer strokes(中风), four percent fewer deaths and eleven percent fewer new cases of heart disease. ___71__
Researchers said it could prevent one hundred thousand heart attacks and ninety-two thousand deaths every year. The researchers were from the University of California, San Francisco, Stanford University and Columbia University. They and public health professionals in the United States are interested in a national campaign to persuade people to eat less salt. ___72___.
However, some scientists say such a campaign is an experiment with the health of millions of people.
Michael Alderman is among the critics(批评家). He is a high blood pressure expert and professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Doctor Alderman says that eating less salt results in lower blood pressure. ___73___. And he says salt has other biological effects. He says calling for reductions in the national diet could have good effects, but it could also have harmful results.
Another critic is David McCarron, a nutrition and kidney(肾) disease expert at the University of California, Davis. He and his team looked at large studies of diets in thirty-three countries. ___74___. Most of them eat more salt than American health officials advise.
Doctor McCarron says the worldwide similarity suggests that a person’s brain might decide how much salt to eat.
Both Doctor McCarron and Doctor Alderman have connections to the Salt Institute, a trade group for the salt industry. Doctor Alderman is a member of an advisory committee. ___75__ Doctor McCarron is paid for offering scientific advice to the Salt Institute.
A. But he says he receives no money from the group.

As can be seen in the picture, a boy is rowing a boat trapped in a bottle floating on the surface of the sea. It seems that he won’t row his boat any further though he is making great efforts..
The picture intends to convey the message that we shouldn’t be webbed to our own ideas when we are trying to reach our goals. In our daily life, we may meet with kinds of problems . We need to find different solutions to them. If we always stand by our opinions, we may get half the results with double the effort. Just like the boy in the picture, no matter how hard he is rowing, he will never row the trapped boat out of the bottle.
In my opinion, only by opening our minds, can we solve the problems and reach our goals.

Text 9
Good morning, everyone. My name’s David. I’m a journalist who specializes in travel. Some of you may read the travel section of the newspaper, so you know the kinds of articles I write.
Anyway, I’m not here to tell you about my job. I’ve been invited here by the Astoria Tourism Agency to tell you about travel to Astoria. Now as I’m sure most of you know, Astoria is a rather large island located eleven hundred kilometers in a northeast direction from New Zealand. As you can see on this map here, it’s about 25 percent larger than New Zealand, and it has quite a different shape. While New Zealand’s long and thin, Astoria has the shape of a square.
Now, I guess none of you here has been to Astoria yet, so let me give you a bit of a description. Most of the people there live in the northern half of the island. This part of the island is warmer than the southern half, but it wouldn’t be fair to say that southern half is cold. In fact, the whole island is close enough to the Equator so that no matter how far south you go, you wouldn’t even need a sweater to stay warm. So we can see it’s a wonderful tourist attraction in any season.

As a newspaper reporter, Inez’s father traveled around the world. He wrote stories about the interesting people he met. On her fifteenth birthday, Inez could hardly believe it when her father announced that she was old enough to go with him on one of his trips! He said his next story would be about salt mining in Europe. Inez had never thought much about salt, she didn’t know what to expect, but she knew she would love being with her father.
Months later, when Inez and her father arrived at the salt mine, they found themselves walking into the middle of a busy workday. Mrs. Walker, the owner, said she would not be available to talk until the workday was over. She suggested that Inez and her father should help out so Inez’s father would have first-hand experience for his story. Before Inez realized what was happening, she was in the factory. This was not what she had imagined her trip would be like.
People rushed past her carrying hammers, nails, and wood to make boxes for the salt. Everyone seemed to be in such a hurry. As another newly constructed box was pushed at her, Inez spread a label with glue and stuck it on the side of the box. When she had agreed to go with her father on his newspaper assignment, she had pictured an adventure, not hard labor.
Inez looked at the salt covering her father’s once-blue pants and sighed. She could taste the salt in her mouth and smell it in the air. Inez had been using salt all her life, but she had never imagined that it existed in such quantities or that it was so hard to package.
Inez’s father rubbed his hands together and grinned at her. “I know this probably isn’t what you had in mind,” he said, “but sometimes the best days are the ones that don’t go as planned.”
Best? she wondered. She had learned two lessons today. One was to value every grain of salt to fall from a shaker. The other was to hear the details before agreeing to go on a job with her father!

Dear Mr. Whitman,
I am writing to thank you for allowing Maria and me to use your office as a workspace as well as to praise your wonderful organizational skills. Maria and I, as you know, have been in your office many times in the past few days writing letters to raise money for our community service trip to Pucallpa, Peru, where we will work with poor children. Not only did you allow us to use your office space, but also you helped us greatly by providing us with a list of possible contributors. Without your assistance, I don’t think we would have been able to raise enough money for such a trip.
We recognize that accepting our request for office space required flexibility on your part, but because of your excellent organizational skills and assistance we were able to accomplish our objectives without disrupting your daily routine. Every time we needed office supplies, such as pens, highlighters, envelopes, or paper, we were able to find them with ease. Your donations of the materials and postage needed to send over one hundred letters are most appreciated. We could not have done this without you.
You have helped us greatly this past week. Your generosity will not only provide us with the opportunity to make this trip possible, but will also be a great benefit both to the children in Pucallpa and us. Again, we thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Amy Fynmore

Hawaii is an important trading center and about six million tourists visit there every year. With all that traffic in and out, exotic species(外来物种) have plenty of opportunities to reach the islands. According to biologists, exotic species are the number one threat to the state’s economy, environment, and way of life.
The question in Hawaii is, can the invaders be stopped?
Quarantines are one way to do this. Quarantine is the process of isolating animals or products. In Hawaii, pet dogs and cats coming into the state remain in a special holding facility for four months to make sure they don’t have rabies(狂犬病). Many agricultural products are also quarantined to see if they are carrying insect pests or plant diseases.
Inspection is a second way to stop biological invaders. At airports, borders, and shipping ports, inspectors examine passengers and their baggage to see if they are carrying exotic species. The inspectors also destroy fruits, vegetables, or other goods that might be carrying harmful pests or diseases. Specially trained dogs also smell goods in the ship for exotic species.
What if an exotic species slips by inspectors? Then efforts are made to control the invader. In Hawaii, government agencies control invaders by setting livetraps around wildlife shelters and other places. At Haleakala National Park employees have built miles of fences to keep out exotic pigs and goats. For years these animals ate and walked over native rainforest plants, but the fences have helped reverse(逆转) this damage. Now native plants grow in places that were bare rock only a short time ago.
In some cases biological control helps to solve the exotic species problems. It is the science of controlling one invader with another. In the early 1900s, several exotic predators(肉食动物) were imported to Hawaii to eat a harmful exotic pest called the sugarcane leafhopper. The insect was destroying 70,000 tons of sugar a year, but the predators brought it under control.
The efforts of these scientists and other people are vitally important. In Hawaii alone,10,000 different species of native plants and animals still need to be protected. Many of these are found nowhere else on earth. By stopping the spread of the biological invaders, we not only protect ourselves, but we also protect the many other native species that make our planet such a special place to live.
64. This passage is mainly about ________.
A. the methods for preventing exotic species
B. the effects of exotic invasion on Hawaii
C. the problems faced by the Hawaiian economy
D. the role of biologists in controlling native species
65. Hawaii is at a great risk of invasion by exotic species, because ________.
A. many agriculture products grow there
B. regular inspections of animals are useless
C. millions of people go to Hawaii each year
D. biological control efforts have not worked
66. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Animals and products are put in quarantines before entering Hawaii.
B. Trained dogs are used to examine passengers and their baggage.
C. Livetraps and fences are set to protect exotic pigs and goats.
D. Some exotic predators are imported to destroy invaders’ food.
67. What argument does the author make in the last paragraph?
A. Hawaii has the most unknown species of plants on earth.
B. Humans have a responsibility to control exotic species.
C. Scientists make the difference to the species protection.
D. Species should be allowed to exist without human interruption.

My friend Fowkes, tells a story of a class he took. On the first day the professor marched up to the blackboard, looked through his notes, cleared his throat, and began. Fowkes was the only student in the course. Once Fowkes fell ill and missed a class. When he returned, to Fowkes's astonishment, the professor began to deliver not the next lecture in the sequence but the one after. Had he lectured to an empty hall in the absence of his only student? It was perfectly possible. This story happened in 1930s, when books were short and expensive.
Today, professors continue to lecture and students to listen much as they did. It’s time for us to abandon the lecture system and turn to methods that really work.
Attending lectures is passive learning, at least for inexperienced listeners. Active learning, in which students write essays or perform experiments and then have their work evaluated by an instructor, is far more beneficial for those who have not yet fully learned how to learn. Most students learn best by engaging in debate. They need small discussion classes that demand a joint effort of teacher and students rather than classes in which one person, however learned, expresses his or her own ideas.
The lecture system harms professors as well. It reduces feedback to a minimum, so that the lecturer can neither judge how well students understand the material nor benefit from their questions or comments. Questions that require the speaker to clarify unclear points and comments that challenge inadequately constructed arguments are indispensable to scholarship. Without them, the liveliest mind becomes dull.
If lectures make so little sense, why have they been allowed to continue? The truth is that lectures are easier on everyone than debates. Lectures give some students an opportunity to sit back and let the professor run the show. In a classroom where everyone contributes, students are less able to hide and professors have less room to show off how smart they are.
Worse still, the lectures too frequently come at the wrong end of the students' educational careers -- during the first two years, when they most need close, even individual, instruction. If lecture classes were restricted to junior and senior undergraduates and to graduate students, who are more academically independent and more capable of working on their own, they would be far less destructive of students' interests and enthusiasms. After all, students must learn to listen before they can listen to learn.
67. The author tells a story in Paragraph 1 to ___________.
A. lead into the main argumentation
B. provide the historical background
C. show reasons of lecture absences
D. compare two different kinds of classes
68. What can we learn about the current lecture system?
A. Students take passive part in small discussion classes.
B. The professors need more room to present their talents.
C. Lectures are mainly intended for junior and senior students.
D. It is far from beneficial for those academically inexperienced students.
69. The underlined word “indispensable” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A. common B. necessary C. available D. abundant
70. What is the best title for the passage?
A. College Lectures: Graduates or Undergraduates?
B. College Lectures: Advantages and Disadvantages
C. College Lectures: Continue or Not?
D. College Lectures: Today and Past

根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Potato chips, which are popular everywhere today, had an unusual origin. The snack came about because of a complaint and an argument. An American named George Crum is credited with inventing potato chips. ____71____
In 1853, Crum worked in Saratoga Springs as the chef. One day a customer sent his serving of fried potatoes back to the chef, complaining that they should have been sliced thinner. Chef Crum prepared another serving of thinner fried potatoes. The customer again returned them. By this time, Crum was angry. He thinly sliced a large number of potatoes and then salted and fried them. ____72____ To Crum’s surprise, the customer loved them. The man even requested more. Afterwards, the customer left the restaurant to tell everyone about the delicious new food.
____73____ What is known is that Crum named his new dish “potato crunches,” although locally they became known as Saratoga Chips. When Crum opened a new restaurant, he put baskets of his chips on all the tables. Some people claimed, however, that potato crunches were not even on the menu. People who are aware of the success of the potato chip industry think it strange that Crum never patented his Saratoga Chips.
An important advance in the potato chip industry came in 1926, when Laura Scudder developed the waxed paper bag at her potato chip factory. Scudder had her workers take home sheets of waxed paper to make into small bags. The workers used their clothing irons to iron the sheets of paper. The heat from the irons quickly melted the wax, causing the sheets of paper to stick together. ____74____ The tops were then sealed with heated irons. The bags kept the chips fresher so they could be shipped to customers far away.
Three years later, a new type of fryer allowed further development in the cooking of potato chips. With the continuous fryer, many more chips could be cooked at the same time. Today, people all over the country enjoy the tasty snack. ____75____
A. In the early 1900s, things changed, and several companies around the United States began making potato chips.
B. Although the potato chip began as an accident, it is now one of America’s most popular snack foods.
C. The next day, they hand packed potato chips into the bags, but the job was not quite finished.
D. They sold the chips to neighborhood stores from boxes and glass cases.
E. No one knows exactly how Crum reacted to the experience.
A. He did not, however, intend to invent anything.
B. His aim was to annoy the demanding customer.

We were having sports on the playground when Lily fell down and hurt her leg badly. We were all worried about her. One of the boys carried her on the back, with the help of some others, to the clinic immediately. It turned out that her right leg was broken and she had to stay in the hospital. The following days, we went to visit her with flowers and fruit. Seeing her lying in bed with leg wrapped in bandages, we felt sorry for her and hoped that she would recover soon. Last week, when we heard that she returned home, we brought her our notes and helped her make up for the classes she missed. She was very moved. It is our friendship that comfort and cheer up us each other when we are in trouble. (137words)
第二节 开放作文(15分)
三、Possible version:
In the picture, I can see a bird sitting on a nest built on a tree. What interests me most is that the tree is not a real one but a picture, which makes me very sad.
I think the picture wants to show us that the problem of environment is very urgent. With population increasing rapidly, more and more forests have been destroyed and fewer and fewer trees are left. If we don’t pay much attention to this situation, maybe in the near future, there would be no trees left and the story in the picture would become true. So it’s high time for us human beings to take action to protect the environment. (119words)
As we can see in the picture, a lively painting of a big tree lies against the window in a room. Unexpectedly, a bird flies into the room and builds its nest in the “tree”. Obviously, the bird doesn’t observe the surroundings carefully and mistakes the “tree” in the painting for the real one in the nature. How careless the bird is! It is easy to infer that the bird can not enjoy itself in such a nest! Simple as the picture is, what it conveys to us is thought-provoking. When we do something, we can’t ignore the surroundings and focus only on the outside of things, just like the bird. We had better observe things carefully, think it over and learn to tell the true from the false. Only in this way can we achieve our aims. (138words)
