If so, what does it say about the area and the people who live there?‎ Many cities are recognised across the world by their unofficial titles. New York is the Big Apple, London is the Big Smoke, and Los Angeles is famously called La La Land (used to mean that the people who live there are slightly crazy).‎ Now Britain's national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey, and the British linguistics charity (语言学慈善机构), the English Project, are launching a project to uncover the nicknames people ‎ use for local places.‎ The project, which got started last week to coincide with English Language Day, is called Location Lingo. It aims to identify the names people use every day, whether it's a term of endearment (昵称) or a hate name.‎ The University‎ of ‎Winchester's Professor Bill Lucas is a supporter of the English Project. He explains that unofficial place names often show what people think about a place. “The name that people create for a place forms an emotional connection,” he says. “So Basingstoke becomes Amazingstoke, Swindon is known as Swindump and Padstow, hometown of chef Rick Stein, is nicknamed Padstein.”‎ Basingstoke is a town in central England. The local nickname. Amazingstoke, shows the affection that locals seem to have for the area.Swindon, on the other hand, is sometimes called Swindump, showing that some people think it's a dump (垃圾场). Stanford Le Hope in Essex is called Stanford No Hope by locals. And Padstow in Cornwall is so closely associated with the local celebrity Rick Stein that it's become known as Padstein.‎ Since launching the online database last week, the creators have already received 3,000 alternative titles for places and famous buildings.‎ Glen Hart, Ordnance Survey's head of research, says the information could be very helpful to the emergency services, for example. “By having the most complete set of nicknames we could help the emergency services quickly locate the right place, and maybe even save lives,” he says.‎ ‎1.According to Bill Lucas, unofficial place names________.‎ A.are mostly positive B.make many people confused C.don't show the real condition of a place D.are a good way for people to express their feelings ‎2.We can learn from the passage that Swindump is probably________.‎ A.a hate name B.a place of interest C.a term of endearment D.a famous person's name ‎3.In the opinion of Glen Hart, Britain's nickname survey________.‎ A.is of little value B.has a practical use C.will face lots of difficulties D.will honor local celebrities ‎4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?‎ A.London is called ‎La La Land.‎ B.Swindon has many nicknames.‎ C.People consider Basingstoke a dangerous place.‎ D.People in Stanford Le Hope are disappointed with it.‎ ‎5.What's the main idea of the passage?‎ A.Organizations collect unofficial place names.‎ B.Cities across Britain have special features.‎ C.Unofficial titles are bringing cities trouble.‎ D.People have a great affection for their cities.‎ Ⅲ.阅读表达 ‎[1]A new online service offers a simple way to let other people know how to say your name correctly. It lets others hear you say it yourself in your email.‎ ‎[2]Today, more people from different cultures work, live and study together. Some worry that having a difficult name could limit them. Sheetal Dube and her husband came to the United States from India seven years ago. She said, “My name, Sheetal, is a very common Indian name and in India people would just know how to pronounce it. But I realize American people find it hard to pronounce.”‎ ‎[3]Ms Dube now owns a new company called Audioname. She came up with the idea after doing a presentation with someone she worked with. She said, “My colleague was Mary and it was very easy for everyone in the room to say ‘Mary's findings showed this.’ But it's very difficult to say ‘Sheetal's findings showed this.’ So that' s where this idea really stuck in my head. What if I just have an audio (音频的) name and I put it in my email and they have a chance to hear it before they meet me?”‎ ‎[4]The service is free. Ms Dube hopes her idea will help make introductions a little easier. “I created a Web application where people can go and ____________________in their own voice. After the recording, there is a little audio file which sits in a Web address which they can actually go and put in their email signature on their website. So when they interact with other people, they can have this audio pronunciation next to their name.”‎ ‎[5]Marketing specialist Larry Chiagouris advises people with really difficult names to consider using a nickname in their job search. Sheetal Dube says she heard of advice like that while researching her idea. She thinks a service like Audioname offers a better choice.‎ ‎1.What does the new online service offer to people?(no more than 10 words)‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎2.What is the problem of Sheetal Dube's name according to her?(no more than 8 words)‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎3.When did Sheetal Dube get the idea for the online service?(no more than 11 words)‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎4.Fill in the blank in Paragraph 4 with proper words.(no more than 4 words)‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎5.What does Sheetal Dube think about Larry Chiagouris' advice?(no more than 12 words)‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎________________________________________________________________________‎ 答 案 课时跟踪检测(十七)‎ Ⅰ.1. no comment“无可奉告”;no doubt“毫无疑问”;no problem“没有问题”;no wonder“不足为奇”。‎ ‎2. struggle to do sth. regret to do“很抱歉要做……”;beyond one's power“超出某人的能力范围”;within one's power“在某人能力范围内”。‎ ‎5.选C would rather do sth.than do sth.“宁愿做某事而不愿做某事”。‎ ‎6. if only“要是……(就好了)”;if so“如果这样的话”;if not“要不是的话”。‎ ‎7. aim“目标”;direction“方向”;point“点”。‎ ‎8. a place后应接动词不定式作定语,排除B、D两项;equip with意为“用…… pick up“拾起;接收”;turn up“出现;露面”;break up“粉碎;解散”;build up“逐渐增强;建立;开发”。‎ ‎12. keep ... free from ... “使…… ‎ ‎14. as for“关于”;according to“根据”;instead of“代替”,均不符合语境。‎ Ⅱ. ‎1. He explains that unofficial place names often show what people think about a place. “The name that people create for a place forms an emotional connection,” he says Swindon, on the other hand, is sometimes called Swindump, showing that some people think it's a dump ‎ Ⅲ.1.It allows people to say others' names correctly.‎ ‎2.It is difficult for Americans to pronounce.‎ ‎3.She got the idea after doing a presentation with a colleague.‎ ‎4.record their names ‎5.It is not as good as the service that Audioname offers.‎
