The other day, BBC broadcast its documentary(纪录片) Are Our Kids Tough Enough?—Chinese School, in which the British and Chinese teaching styles competed against each other, with both sides tested after four weeks to see who came out on top.
In this unique experiment, five Chinese teachers took over a British classroom with 50 teenagers aged 13 and 14 in a British school for one month and taught them in a typical Chinese way: no talking, no questions and experiencing the severe classroom discipline within an extended schoolhour from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In the meantime, another group of students were guided in the British teaching style: free talking, free questioning, thinking for themselves and relaxing learning atmosphere.
At the end of the documentary, all the pupils took part in the same exams in a few subjects. Next was the result.

Dear_Minister,
I_hear_that many people in your country are suggesting Britain’s education system should follow China’s after a BBC documentary, which reported a 4week experiment ending up with Chinese teaching methods defeating British ones. It is said you are collecting opinions from Chinese students. The following is my view.
Personally, I strongly advise you forget Chinese style of education. On one hand, Chinese students’ wining in test scores is in fact at the cost of their creative abilities and autonomy in learning. As a matter of fact, many of my classmates could do nothing without teachers and parents’ help, let alone make great innovations in their later life. On the other hand, we Chinese students are suffering from a severe lack of sleep and good health, all due to the pursuit of a high score in numerous tests. Without a healthy body, nothing is meaningful. Do you really want young Britons to spend 15 to 16 hours a day on study?
Therefore, dear Minister, you should think twice if you decide to follow that suggestion.
Yours_sincerely,
A_Chinese_senior_student

(2016·江苏常州、江阴两校联考)阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
Right after the Second World War, Germany was in ruins. Almost all the houses, factories and schools were destroyed. Plenty of people were homeless as well as jobless. Worse still, the supply of water and electricity was often cut off in the city. Two American journalists interviewed a German family living in the basement. The husband was disabled from the war and the wife was just dismissed from a clothing company. Worse still, there were bills for them to pay—four children to care for and food to buy. Life was hard for them at that time.
After the interview, the journalists chatted with each other on the way back to the company.
“Do you think the Germans could rebuild their homeland?”
“Absolutely.”
“But I can’t see any hope for the country at all. How can you be so certain about that?”
“Have you noticed what they put on the table in the basement? There was a vase of flowers. A nation, suffering at such moment, hasn’t forgotten about flowers. It shows that hopes are not lost. They are still able to dream. A nation with hope can create miracles. They are sure to be able to rebuild their homeland.”

Two American journalists interviewed a German family after the war. Though living a poor life, the family still placed flowers on the table, which convinced a journalist that Germans were bound to rebuild their homeland.
As is often the case, a man who can dream will try hard to overcome any difficulty and live his dream. Therefore, I agree that dreams can change one’s life. Take my friend Tom for example. In Senior One, he was an energetic boy who was always dreaming of becoming a player in the school basketball team. However, at the beginning almost everyone persuaded him out of his dream because he was no more than 1.65 meters tall. However, he didn’t lose heart. With determination, he devoted himself to playing basketball after class and became good at it. Now he is a successful basketball player in our school team.
From my point of view, dreams play an important part in changing my life. To realize my dream, first of all, I should focus my effort on my studies. In addition, when faced with failure, I choose never to give up. Last but not least, I should develop such skills as problemsolving and communicating.

However, when I traveled in China, people sitting next to me often asked me about my age, salary, and even marriage. They were also willing to introduce themselves as much as possible.
accompanied by his colleagues. After dinner, the professor paid for the meal alone, although the others also offered to pay for it. In Britain, we are accustomed to going “dutch” while eating in a restaurant.

The above descriptions and picture show us that cultural differences can be often experienced. People from different countries behave in different ways, for example, interpersonal communication, greetings, and table manners.
Frankly speaking, it’s necessary for us to acknowledge cultural differences. For example, it’s polite for a receiver to open the gift upon receiving it abroad while it’s a different story in China. Unlike Chinese, American people care more about personal space when keeping a conversation with others.
Personally, we can’t highlight the importance of cultural differences enough. People should accumulate as much information about cultures as possible through books or the Internet, thus avoiding unintentional offense while in contact with people from different cultures, especially in the era of globalization. What’s more, we should bear in mind that mutual understanding and respect matter in the global village, and enjoy a very “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” mentality.

The two selections clearly reveal that more and more teenagers engage in illegal drug abuse, which has become a growing social phenomenon. It poses a big challenge to the world’s fight against drugs.
Quite a few factors give rise to the problem. For one thing, some teenagers take drugs illegally because they are curious or want to rebel against families. For another, some try them just on account of peer pressure. Drug abuse has a dangerous effect on teenagers. Drugs affect teens’ ability to concentrate on their study and work. Besides, drug abuse can cause both emotional and physical problems, and even suck the life right out of a person.
To protect teenagers from illegal drugs, the government should attach importance to safety education. We should make teenagers realize the risk and consequence of taking drugs by putting more safety education into textbooks. Meanwhile, parents’ supervision and communication play a key role in keeping teenagers away from drugs.

(2016·苏北四市期中联考)请阅读下列文字及图表,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。
We suffer from pollution. “I can’t bear the smog in this city any more. It’s getting worse and worse.” said Wang Tao, a senior citizen in Beijing.
“I’m often disturbed by loud noise during my work and sleep.” said a senior student from Shenzhen.
Many of China’s waterways are largely unfit for human to direct use because of industrialization.
A 2015 report estimated that 1.6 million people in China die each year from heart, lung and stroke problems because of polluted air.
New technologies have promoted the development of urbanization and economy. While economic growth may continue, the rewards of this growth may be opposed by the harm from the pollution unless environmental protection is increased.

As the diagram shows, vehicles, coalburning, airborne dust, mobile sources and industrial production are the major pollution sources in Chinese cities, which have damaged our life, environment and even the future development.
Various forms of pollution, including air pollution, noise pollution, and water pollution, have increased with the fast development of Chinese cities, which has caused many problems and concerns. With the development of modern industry and expansion of urbanization, pollution is becoming more and more serious.
Measures must be taken to balance city development and environmental protection. First of all, our government should make more strict laws to limit the use of private cars. What’s more, we are supposed to raise our awareness of environmental protection and push for the use of alternative energy, such as solar energy and wind energy. Only by applying sustainable development can we have a better world to live in.

As is vividly shown in the cartoon, modern life has been dominated by computers. Whether a person is working, studying or playing, he is always staying in front of a computer. Even when he sleeps, what is in his dream is still the computer.
The reasons why modern people are tied up with computers are as follows. On the one hand, there is no denying that the computer is currently the most efficient tool to meet the needs of their work or to entertain themselves. But on the other hand, many people admit that they are too much addicted to computers to maintain facetoface contact with their friends and colleagues.
Hence, it’s necessary for us to use computers in a reasonable way. After all, the computer is invented to connect you and me, and to bring conveniences to our life rather than set a barrier to keep people beyond reach.

One day a farmer complained to his wife, “You’re lazy at home. You work slowly and waste too much time.”
Having heard this, his wife was very angry and shouted at her husband, “You are wrong. Stay at home tomorrow. I will go to the field to do your work there. But will you finish my work at home?” “Fine,” the farmer said happily.
“And you should milk the cow, feed the pigs, clean the tools, take care of our hen and spin the yarn (纺纱).” The wife added.
The next day, the woman went to the field, while the farmer stayed at home. He took up a vessel and went to milk the cow. When he tried to do it, he received a good kick from the cow. Then he went to the pig house and his head hit against the wall, making him feel painful. At last he went to feed the hen but forgot to spin the yarn.

According to the story, everyone shall do their own duties, otherwise how awful it would be! So it is necessary for us to make the best use of our advantages and avoid our disadvantages.
As students, we must regard learning as our first duty. We should read widely and lay a solid foundation for further study. Of course, we should be diligent and learn from each other so as to become an independent and criticalthinking person in the future.
Indeed, everyone has her or his own part to play. Each part for us to play well will make our life or the world better and better. Just as the famous saying goes, “All for one, and one for all.”

The rise of selfie (自拍) photography in some of the world’s most beautiful, and dangerous places is causing a range of interventions(干预措施) aimed at fighting risktaking behavior that has resulted in a string of shocking deaths worldwide.
The act of taking a picture of oneself with a mobile phone, placing the subject centrestage, has exploded in popularity in recent years, with everyone from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ to U.S. President Barack Obama joining in.
But the selfie has also inspired a lot of risktaking and offensive public behavior, pushing the boundaries of safety and behavior, whether by hanging from a skyscraper or posing with live explosives.
Several governments and regulatory bodies have now begun treating the selfie as a serious threat to public safety, leading them to launch public education campaigns reminding people of those against smoking and excessive drinking.

Today, more and more people, including some celebrities cannot resist the temptation to take photos of themselves in places with breathtaking scenery, regardless of the dangers involved. The trend has raised much public concern.
Personally, I am against the behavior. Firstly, a cool selfie could cost you your life, and there have been several reports about people losing their lives while taking selfies. I strongly hold the belief that nothing is more important than life itself. Secondly, people who are addicted to selfies are more likely to violate the standards of social behavior, which may present a great danger to other people or the environment. They don’t care about annoying people in their social media or care about the tourist attraction they are destroying.
In short, I don’t think it worthwhile taking selfies at the risk of life. Selfies as acts of selffocus may also bring annoyance to the world around us.
