A
When it's five o'clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for many workers,is defined by time. They leave when the clock tells them they're done.
These days, the time is everywhere:not just on clocks or watches, but on cellphones and computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work.New research shows that clockbased work schedules hinder morale(士气)and creativity.
Clocktimers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example:a meeting from 9 a.m.to 10 a.m.,research from 10 a.m.to noon, etc. On the other hand, tasktimers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list;each task starts when the previous task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning.
What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways?Does one make us more productive?Better at the tasks at hand?Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet and AnneLaure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities—from project planning, holiday shopping,to yoga—by time or todo list to measure how they performed under “clock time” vs.“task time”.They found clocktimers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives.Tasktimers are happier and more creative, but less productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and seize opportunities that come up.
The researchers argue that taskbased organizing tends to be undervalued and undersupported in business culture.Smart companies, they believe, will try to bake more taskbased planning into their strategies.
This might be a small change to the way we view work and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the economy:work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be,to some extent, clocktimers, taskbased timing should be used when they are performing a job that requires more creativity. It'll make those tasks easier, and the taskdoers
will be happier.
1.What is the way people often do their work according to the author?
A.They give priority to the most urgent task on hand.
B.They set a time limit for each specific task.
C.They combine clockbased and taskbased planning.
D.They accomplish their tasks one by one.
2.What did the researchers find in their experiments on clocktimers?
A.They tend to be more productive.
B.They seize opportunities as they come up.
C.They always get their work done in time.
D.They have more control over their lives.
3.What is the researchers' opinion about today's business culture?
A.It does not support the strategies adopted by smart companies.
B.It attaches more importance to work efficiency than to workers' lives.
C.It aims to bring employees' potential and creativity into full play.
D.It does not lay enough emphasis on taskbased practice.
4.From the passage,we can conclude that ________.
A.it is important to keep a balance between work and life
B.taskbased timing is preferred for doing creative work
C.performing creative jobs tends to make workers happier
D.a scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation
While most people will still probably need, and be,to some extent, clocktimers, taskbased timing should be used when they are performing a job that requires more creativity.
分析:本句中While引导让步状语从句,意思是“虽然”,相当于although;when they are performing a job是when引导的时间状语从句;that requires more creativity是一个定语从句,先行词是a job。
根据第三段中的“It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types of planning”可知,人们采用了这两种方式的复合型工作方式,因此选项C“他们把时钟型和任务型的计划结合起来”
give priority to... 以优先考虑”;on hand意为“在手边”;set a time limit for...
根据第四段中的“They found clocktimers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt little control over their lives.Tasktimers are happier and more creative, but less productive”可知,采用时钟计时型工作方式的人效率更高,采用任务计时型工作方式的人更开心,但是效率较低。所以选A。
根据第五段首句“The researchers argue that taskbased organizing tends to be undervalued and undersupported in business culture”可知,研究人员认为任务型的工作方式在商业文化中往往被低估并且缺乏支持。
根据末段中的“taskbased timing should be used when they are performing a job that requires more creativity”可知,在做需要更多创造力的工作时还是应当使用任务型的工作方式。故选B项。根据第四段中的“Tasktimers are happier and more creative, but less productive”和末段的末句“It'll make those tasks easier, and the taskdoers will be happier”可知,文中讲述的是采用任务计时型工作方式的人更开心,且更有创造力,但并不意味着做有创造力的工作会让人们更开心,所以选项C是错误的;选项A和D的内容在文中没有提及,是主观臆断,因此也是错误的。

Lately a popular bookstore in Hefei,Anhui Province, has risen_to_fame because it becomes the world's first shared bookstore,in a move meant to encourage more reading among Chinese citizens.
It comes to people's attention as more than 200,000 visitors flooded the store on its first day as a shared bookstore on July 16 this year,a record high since it was reopened to the public in 2019.Some 4,000 books were brought home on the first day,Thepaper.cn reported.
Customers are allowed to borrow up to two books valued at under 150 yuan per visit after registering with an app and paying the 99 yuan deposit(押金).
All books on sale in the bookstore are available for sharing.Returned books that are damaged are sold at a discount. The bookstore also provides a bonus for bookworms.People who finish reading 12 books in three months receive eight percent of their deposit back, and members can be rewarded with one yuan for every book read.
“We want to bring down the cost of reading so people could read
more books,” Xu Xinwei, who helps run the bookstore, told Thepaper.cn.
Some parents buy a lot of books for their children, but they usually end up collecting dust as their children grow up.Similarly, some popular novels for young people also fall out of fashion, according to Xu.“Books are more effectively circulated when they're shared.”
5.The bookstore becomes a shared one ________.
A.to make more money
B.to make more room for new books
C.to inspire more people to read
D.to recommend new books
6.What does the underlined phrase “risen to fame” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Become wellknown. B.Settled down.
C.Broken up. D.Taken over.
7.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The bookstore was once the best in Anhui Province.
B.The books that are sold here can't be borrowed.
C.More than 4,000 books were taken home on July 16 in 2019.
D.The cost of reading can be reduced by sharing the books.
8.What does the bookstore do to attract more readers?
A.The bookstore encourages parents to buy more books for their children.
B.The readers are allowed to borrow the books unconditionally.
C.The readers who are members can receive one yuan for every book read.
D.The bookstore is considering offering a bonus for anyone who likes reading.
People who finish reading 12 books in three months receive eight percent of their deposit back, and members can be rewarded with one yuan for every book read.
分析:本句中who finish reading 12 books in three months为定语从句,修饰先行词People,关系代词who在定语从句中作主语,指人。
根据第一段中的“it becomes the world's first
shared bookstore, in a move meant to encourage more reading”可知,这个书店成为一家共享书店是为了更好地推广阅读。
根据第一段中的“popular”一词,以及第二段中的“more than 200,000 visitors flooded the store on its first day as a shared bookstore on July 16 this year,a record high since it was reopened to the public”可知,这家书店应该很受欢迎。rise to fame意为“出名”。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“We want to bring down the cost of reading so people could read more books”可推知,共享图书可能会降低阅读成本,这样人们可以阅读更多书。故选D项。B项错在“can't be borrowed”,这与文中的“Customers are allowed to borrow”和“All books on sale in the bookstore are available for sharing”不符。
根据第四段中的“and members can be rewarded with one yuan for every book read”可知,共享书店的会员每读一本书可以得到一元钱的奖励。故选C项。文章中提到有些家长为孩子买了很多书,但并没有提到书店鼓励家长为孩子多买书,A项错误;B项错在unconditionally ,与文中的“Customers are allowed to borrow up to two books valued at under 150 yuan per visit after registering with an app and paying the 99 yuan deposit(钾金)”不符;文章提到共享书店的会员每读一本书可以得到一元钱的奖励,并不是每一位爱好读书的人都能得到奖励,故D项错误。

After one of his close family friends known for her generosity died of cancer in 2019,26yearold Luke Cameron decided to do at least one good deed a day,for 365 days, and he has not missed yet.
The Gloucester resident performed his first good deed on January 1,2019,with the simple act off greeting a waitress at a cafe he visited. The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people and followed it up by donating coins to a woman, who did not have enough to feed a parking meter.
Though most of his kind gestures have been welcomed,Luke says there have been a few awkward situations. When he was attempting to give away a £20 bill to an elderly lady whose granddaughter was doubtful of his intentions and the time he bought a sausage roll(腊肠卷)for a homeless man,he happened to be a vegetarian.
The majority of Luke's good deeds, which have been recorded in an
online diary, have been about helping people with small things. He helped to take out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or helped a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. However, the young man has also spent close to£4 000 of his own money, buying groceries or gifts for the children in need.
To try to encourage others to perform good deeds,Luke has created a deck of cards called“Cards for Kindness”.Each suggests a simple act of kindness—things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy. The best part is that all the money he collects from distributing the cards is donated to the British Heart Foundation, a charity that helps the homeless.
Luke's generosity has not gone unnoticed. To reward the young man, Dominos recently awarded him a year's supply of free pizza. Not surprisingly, the bighearted youngster has decided to use the gift to hold special pizza days for charity.

A.His kind deed was appreciated.
B.She turned out to be a vegetarian.
C.He bought a sausage roll for a homeless man.
D.He was misunderstood by her granddaughter.
11.What can we learn about Luke's good deeds?
A.He was employed by a British charity.
B.He only helped people with small things.
C.He encouraged good deeds through cards.
D.He raised £4 000 for the children in need.
12.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Dominos offered gifts to the charity.
B.Luke was not surprised at the pizza.
C.Luke was awarded by the government.
D.Luke would donate the pizza to others.

The best part is that all the money he collects from distributing the cards is donated to the British Heart Foundation, a charity
that helps the homeless.(倒数第二段最后一句)
第一个that引导表语从句;he collects from distributing the cards为省略了关系代词的定语从句,先行词是all the money;第二个that引导定语从句,先行词是charity, that在从句中作主语,同时a charity that helps the homeless作the British Heart Foundation的同位语。

When he was attempting to give away a £20 bill to an elderly lady whose granddaughter was doubtful of his intentions...(第三段第二句)

Many a young person tells me that he wants to be a writer.I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter.“You've got to want to write,” I say to them,“not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poorpaying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20year career in the U.S.Coast Guard to become a freelance writer,I had no prospects at all:what I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building.I immediately bought a used manual typewriter and left like a genuine writer.
After a year or so,however,I still hadn't gotten a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat.But I knew I wanted to write.I had dreamed about it for years.I wasn't going to be one of those people who die wondering, what if? I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with uncertainty and fear of failure. This is the shadowland of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.
5.The passage is meant to ________.
A.warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience
B.advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer
C.show young people it's unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fame
D.encourage young people to pursue a writing career
6.“...people who die wondering,what if?”(Para.3) refers to “those ________”.
A.who think too much of the dark side of life
B.who regret giving up their career halfway
C.who think a lot without making a decision
D.who are full of imagination even upon death
7.The underlined word “shadowland” in the last sentence refers to “________”.
A.the wonderland one often dreams about
B.the bright future that one is looking forward to
C.the state of uncertainty before one's final goal is reached
D.a world that exists only in one's imagination

Dear Mr.Shyamalan,
According to the box office, congratulations are in order. It seems your new movie,Split,is doing gangbusters. That means millions of
people all over the world have seen or will soon see your story about a man who is suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder(DID).
As much as I'm rooting for you as an artist,Mr.Shyamalan, personally,I think you climbed to success on the overburdened backs of the mentally ill.
As a person who suffers from multiple(多面的)personalities,as well as a psychologist with professional knowledge and skills in the subject,I feel it is my duty to school you in a few facts:People who suffer from DID are not, generally speaking, scary or cheating. We are normal people who silently suffer from a painful condition in which our sense of who we are feels divided into broken parts. Our condition is often caused by a history of severe and repeated child abuse. In truth,we are victims of unimaginable violence.
With the release of your movie, you have become my bully(恃强凌弱者).I am personally harmed by the absurd fixed image you use in Split.Your description of Kevin Crumb as one more gender confused, crossdressing multiple with a liking for violence has the same effect as shouting across the playground,“People with DID are dangerous nut jobs!”
I have lived for years with the shame created by movies such as yours.Despite being a successful doctor who runs a charity for adult survivors of child abuse,I live with constant anxiety that people will learn of my diagnosis(诊断).For no matter how long I've known someone or how highly they think of me,once they know I'm a multiple, the reaction is imaginable.
In the future,I'd appreciate it if you stopped using our pain and suffering as materials for your entertainment.
Michelle Stevens

A.Alcohol abuse of parents.
B.Ill treatment in childhood.

B.A character in Split.
C.A patient of Michelle Stevens'.
D.A psychologist with multiple personalities.
11.What's the author's purpose in writing the text?
A.To give the movie Split a review.
B.To show respect for people with DID.
C.To state that the movie Split hurt people with DID.
D.To argue that people with DID can also make a difference.
We are normal people who silently suffer from a painful condition in which our sense of who we are feels divided into broken parts.(第三段第二句)
根据第二段“As much as I'm rooting for you as an artist,Mr.Shyamalan, personally,I think you climbed to success on the overburdened backs of the mentally ill.”

根据第一段“It was a normal school day for senior Solymar Solis”中的“a normal school day”和第三段“As unsuspecting Solymar entered the classroom”中的“unsuspecting”可知,Solymar那天刚进入教室时感觉到一切如往常一样,故选项B正确。 根据第三段中的“she was soon overcome with emotion, immediately bursting into tears and covering her mouth. She didn't talk. She was just crying. She was overwhelmed with everything. She thought it was a dream”可知,选项A“她渴望拥抱她的父亲”和选项C“看到自己的父亲她很兴奋”及选项D“她对她看到的一切感到吃惊”,不是题干at first对应的信息,而是发现自己的父亲为自己准备的惊喜后所产生的情感。
根据第四段末句中的“and it turned out perfect”和第五段中的“she deserves all the special arrangements...I'm doing good parenting”可以推断出,这位父亲对这次为女儿准备的惊喜是非常满意的(content)。
;touched“受感动的”;upset“心烦意乱的”。
根据全文的内容,尤其是首段第一句中的“until an unexpected visitor arrived”以及末段中的“Melendez said of being able to surprise his daughter this way”可知,父亲为了给女儿一个惊喜,所以提前回家,并在女儿所在的教室精心准备了这次见面。

Recently,I had lunch with a young Chinese student who studies at a college in New York.He is very bright and aspiring and I enjoyed our conversation.Still I felt frustrated and useless afterwards because I was not able to provide him with any good news.Graduating at the end of this year,he asked me how he could find a job in this country and fulfill his career dreams.
In recent years, students who found a job here after graduation have had to go through a cruel lottery system to obtain their H1B working visa. And the success rates have been declining year after year because of the ever growing number of applicants.Last year, there were 233 000 applicants, and only 30 percent of them were lucky, less than half of the rate in 2019.
And it can only become worse.US President Donald Trump's immigration policies in this country are tightening up and this trend will continue for at least the next few years. In this case, foreign students studying social sciences,a field in which starting salaries are rarely above the required amount, can kiss their visa hopes goodbye.
Compared to the older generation of Chinese students, today's young people no longer consider the US as the only option. Many start to think China offers better opportunities in the longer term.
This is not to say that Chinese students in the US are not interested in job opportunities here any more.A few years of work experience in the US can give them leverage when they finally land back in their home country. But if the job opportunities are largely reduced by the tightening of immigration policy,I expect there will be a decline. And if that
happens,it is the American economy that will suffer from the loss of those educated, hardworking and talented immigrants.
5.The author felt frustrated because ________.
A.he was not interested in the talk
B.he didn't fulfill his career dreams
C.he couldn't provide helpful advice
D.he thought the student was useless
6.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The lottery system for H1B working visa is too tough.
B.Chinese students have no choice but to return to China.
C.President Trump is tightening up the immigration policies.
D.More and more students are applying for the working visa.
7.What does the word “leverage” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Advantage. B.Language.
C.Ability. D.Education.
8.What is the author's attitude to the tightening of immigration policy?
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive.
C.Indifferent. D.Worried.
And if that happens, it is the American economy that will suffer from the loss of those educated, hardworking and talented immigrants.(最后一段最后一句)
if引导条件状语从句;主句包含it is...that...
Still I felt frustrated and useless afterwards because I was not able to provide him with any good news.(第一段第三句)
Last year, there were 233 000 applicants, and only 30 percent of them were lucky, less than half of the rate in 2019.(第二段最后一句)
故选A项。

When Kansas high school student Blake Hawkins discovered an empty locker at his school,he didn't just fill it with books and equipment—instead, the innovative teen turned it into a soda pop vending machine(自动售货机).
Hawkins explains that the“Soda Locker”vending machine uses a coin acceptor,an LCD screen,a microcontroller board,a magnetic switch, some old video game switches, and batteries.
Hawkins explains he had Valley Center High School's support when he was developing the_prototype,and was able to come up with a design that would not damage the existing locker. And he was able to do it for approximately $160 spent on parts.
The Soda Locker has a design where no one can remove the control board from the locker and the door swings shut after use to protect it.Furthermore,it's programmed to take exact change only, and to let the operator know when someone is trying to cheat the coin system.
Hawkins explains he originally thought about the idea for having a soda pop vending machine in a locker a year ago on his way to history class. While he initially treated it as a joke, he has proven how you can take an idea and turn it into something brilliant. He wrote,“Whether you build your own Soda Locker or not,I hope you're inspired to build whatever project you've come up with!”
9.What can we learn about the Soda Locker made by Hawkins?
A.It looks nice.
B.It is a combination.
C.Its soda tastes great.
D.Its equipment is advanced.
10.What does the underlined phrase “the prototype” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The locker. B.The acceptor.
C.The machine. D.The switch.
11.What does Paragraph 4 mainly discuss?
A.The design process of the Soda Locker.
B.The protection system of the Soda Locker.
C.The charging system of the Soda Locker.
D.The development cost of the Soda Locker.
12.Which of the following best describes Hawkins according to the text?
A.Optimistic. B.Productive.
C.Creative. D.Innocent.
He wrote,“Whether you build your own Soda Locker or not, I hope you're inspired to build whatever project you've come up with!”(最后一段最后一句)
分析:Whether引导让步状语从句;you're inspired to build...是宾语从句,作hope的宾语;whatever project you've come up with是宾语从句,作build的宾语。
根据第二段中的“a coin acceptor, an LCD screen,a microcontroller board,a magnetic switch...”
根据第四段中的“no one can remove...and the door swings shut after use to protect it”可知,本段主要讲的是这款自动售货机自身的保护系统。

There are new athletes that attend every week, and most likely you'll know a number of them already since there are many different teams represented.
根据第一部分中的“The series will explore when research activities...and why traveling to sanctioned(被制裁的)or embargoed(被禁运的)countries, such as Iran or Cuba, still presents a lot of challenges”
根据第二部分中的“Fellows in Residence will give a talk on their current research project”可知,参加JCB Weekly Afternoon Talk的人主要是进行课题研究的交流,故选C。A项错在在Sayles Hall见面,这是广播爱好者俱乐部会议的见面地点,而不是这个活动的地点;B项错在要收入场费,这与第二部分最后一句“All are invited to attend this free, weekly event”不符;D项与第二部分倒数第二句“Q&A sessions follow, along with a display of relevant items from our collection”不符,故排除。
根据最后一部分中的“Through guests speaking, team building activities, and small group discussions,we explore the intersection(交集)of the spiritual and physical in order to maximize our potential”可知,参与者可以通过玩游戏促进团队合作,故选C。
根据第一部分中的“The first session,‘I had no idea!’,will explore why export controls cannot be ignored at a university campus”,并结合对全文的整体理解可推知,本文所提到的活动都发生在大学里,因此这些信息最有可能来自一个大学的网站,故选B。

BOOKS | ABOUT BOOKS
By David Hugh Smith | APRIL 5,2019
As a little girl,Beatrix Potter loved the country and loved animals. So she brought many different creatures—rabbits, mice, even lizards—into her tiny world.
As she grew older,Beatrix got better and better at drawing animals and nature. Then she started adding stories to her illustrations, making them into books.
British author Matthew Dennison is the latest until last year to turn the story of Beatrix Potter herself into a book:Over the Hills and Far Away:The Life of Beatrix Potter.Indeed,Ms.Potter's extraordinary life makes for an absorbing tale.
Nearly 75 years after her passing, she still is one of the most famous children's writers in the world.Millions of copies of her 23 books have been sold—in many languages, Potter won her popularity by involving readers in the dilemmas of her characters using simple, almost poetic
words.
Dennison's text is filled with telling observations. He skillfully weaves Potter's stories into his description. But Dennison could have benefited from following Potter's example of straightforward storytelling. His description is nonlinear(非线性的).This can prevent the reader from understanding Potter's life.
Dennison, however, repairs this with earnest descriptions, including his beautifully affectionate descriptions about Potter's life.At the end he describes the view today from the sitting room of her Hill Top home, now a museum in Cumbria County,in a way Potter would have loved:It stretches...past stone cottages and snaking lanes to...the blue slopes of mountains and the distant glimmer of sunlight on lake water, over the hills and far away.
8.What can we learn about Over the Hills and Far Away: The Life of Beatrix Potter?
A.It is about animals and nature.
B.It is written by David Hugh Smith.
C.It is an absorbing story about children.
D.It is a newly published story about Potter.
9.Which of the following is the book's writing style?
A.Simple and poetic words.
B.Straightforward storytelling.
C.Clear and reasonable argument.
D.Vivid and affectionate descriptions.
10.What type of writing is the text likely to be?
A.Book review. B.Children's literature.
C.Advertisement. D.Science fiction.
