阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Four years ago my sweet mom died in her own home. I got the call at work, and I headed home quickly. Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. It had started out as a weekend place. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception.
My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land. In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. Her favorite song was “Moon River” and we sang it over and over again. Mom told me stories about how smart I was when I was a little girl --- I could sing before I could talk. She loved to tell how my playpen (婴儿围栏) sat in the kitchen next to the radio and there was one song I particularly loved called “Ivory Tower.” As an adult, I couldn’t remember this song, but Mom took great pleasure in looking back on that childhood memory over and over again.
As time passed, Mom and Dad renovated (整修) that little farmhouse and they went to live there permanently when Dad retired. By then I had my own children and went to visit every week or two. The kids loved the farm while I still hated the silence of the farm.
After my mom’s death, I sat in her chair at the familiar kitchen table, missing her gentle manner. I longed to hear just one more old story. The silence was uncomfortable so I turned on an old radio that sat in the corner of the house.
“Moon River” was playing on the radio. With tears running down my cheek, I listened to every familiar note. Then the radio announcer. “Here’s one we haven’t heard for quite a while,” and an unfamiliar song began. I began to cry harder as I heard the words sung over the airwaves. “Come down, come down from your Ivory Tower…”

Next Halloween, a small vegetable that looks like a pumpkin may appear in a garden near you. The vegetable is a type of pepper that is called “Lil’ Pumpkin.” It’s very special because it has orange, pumpkin-like fruit.
You might think that all vegetables are grown to provide food to eat. But some vegetables are grown mainly for the lively color and holiday spirit that they bring to gardens. These are called “ornamentals (观赏性植物).” Just like lights decorate a Christmas tree, they decorate a garden.
The peppers were bred by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists John Stommel and Robert Griesbach. Another pepper the scientists developed is called “Pepper Jack.” Because Pepper Jack has orange and black cone-shaped (锥形的) fruit, it might remind you of the popular Halloween treat “candy corn.”
Stommel says that vegetable crops such as peppers were first widely grown in
Europe in the 15th century. At that time, people liked these crops more because they looked pretty than because they provided food.
Back then, when a gardener grew plants for decoration and plants for food, the garden was called a “potager.” An example of this is the large gardens on the lawns (草坪) of castles and very large homes where kings and queens lived. One of those large royal homes was the French king’s palace at Versailles during the 1600’s. The palace is still there today, and people from all over the world still go there to visit and see the gardens.
Today, Stommel says using vegetables as decorations in gardens has become popular again.
So you might be wondering, if these peppers are for decoration, can people eat them? Yes, but the fruit from both of these peppers has a sharp taste (kind of like onions!).
These peppers are scheduled to become available in mid-2011. These pretty peppers can be grown in containers and also in garden beds. They grow better with plenty of light and warm temperatures, Stommel says.

Last week I received an e-mail from a friend reporting a sudden decrease in America’s bee population. The message gave me an immediate unpleasant feeling as I thought of the prediction by Albert Einstein: “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination (授粉), no more plants, no more animals, no more man.” A few minutes’ research made me realize that the problem is far from local. In official circles, the condition is commonly called Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). It is a phenomenon in which worker bees from a honeybee colony suddenly disappear.
During the final three months of 2006, a large number of honeybee colonies began to disappear suddenly and strangely from the United States. According to scientists, the domesticated (驯养的) honeybee population has declined by about 50 percent in the last 50 years. Similar losses to the honeybee population are widely believed to have occurred previously only at a regional level. With outbreaks recorded as far back as 1896, this is regarded as the first national honeybee disappearance spreading in US history.
The topics hitting headlines these days leave little room in the news for the suffering of an insect. What we ignore is that without an abundance of bees to pollinate crops, the United States could lose as much as 30 percent of its food supply.
It is commonly believed that CCD is caused by several possible factors, such as diseases, natural disasters, the widespread use of chemicals and the practice of genetic engineering in agriculture. However, some scientists hold the view that the rapid increase of electromagnetic waves produced by the cell phone towers is probably to blame for the sudden disappearance of entire bee colonies.
When bees disappear, we are being warned that we are also in immediate danger. It is time to listen to the message nature is telling us.
46. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Einstein’s prediction about the disappearance of bees.
B. An e-mail about a sudden decrease in bee population.
C. Different factors which result in bee disappearance.
D. The sudden decline of bee population in America.
47. What can be learnt from the passage about Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD)?
A. The condition of CCD only happens to honeybees.
B. If nothing is done about CCD, human beings will die out in four years.
C. The condition of CCD in recent years is more serious than that in the past.
D. There is no record of CCD happening outside the United States.
48. According to the passage, the disappearing bees________.
A. may fly away to avoid diseases or natural disasters
B. cannot find their way in the cell phone towers
C. could cause great loss in man’s food supply
D. have left America for more distant region
49. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 means that ______.
A. the topics about the suffering of bees have hit headlines
B. not much concern is shown in the news topics about bees
C. little room is the reason for the disappearance honeybees
D. the news about the suffering of an insect leaves little room for other news
50. The writer keeps a(n) ______ attitude towards the sudden bee disappearance.
A. anxious B. doubtful
C. unconcerned D. optimistic

A new guidebook says being happy is just like being fit --- you need to practice the skills needed to get this emotion, even during the darkest times.
Road-testing Happiness: How to be Happier by Australian journalist and author Sophie Scott is a self-help book with a difference. “Being happy is something you need to focus on, it doesn’t come as a matter of course,” Scott said. “You always need to make an effort to be happy, even if you reach the point of saying you are contented, you still need to keep focusing and working on the things that made you happy.” Scott also said the book was born out of her interest in the human mind as well as how difficult she found it to manage after her mother died of cancer two years ago.
“I was always interested in psychology, but a lot of happiness books don’t deal with the fact that you can be happy even if your life isn’t going according to plan. The key is managing expectations.” She says, “In the book, I focused on what were the things most likely to make people happy, the ones with the most scientific evidence.” People should think that being happy is yet another task you have to do and then feel guilty when you don’t do it. Scott says the road to a positive outlook begins with very easy, small steps.
“Women in particular today ______: they’ve got to be thin, got to have a career, got to have a perfect relationship so the last thing you need is to be thinking you’ve got to be happy all the time,” She said. “But it is important to improve your quality of life. Stop rushing around and filling each moment of the day with things to do, and then sit down and think about your life and how you’re feeling. The things I got out of this were not things that take a lot of effort: feeling more grateful for the things you’ve got; adjusting your reaction to situations and people. It’s about changing small habits, more tinkering around the edges instead of totally checking and changing your life.”
51. By saying “being happy is just like being fit”, the author probably means ___.
A. people should practice how to remain happy
B. people should spend more time working out
C. keeping happy is the key to continuing our life
D. it’s difficult for people to keep happy all the time
52. What should we do if we want to remain happy in Scott’s opinion?
A. Work hard to achieve your expectations.
B. Read more books about psychological activities.
C. Do some scientific research into the skills of being happy.
D. Think that being happy is a very important task to do.
53. Which of the following would be proper to be filled in the blank?
A. get high expectation
B. feel overloaded
C. can’t look after themselves well
D. have no friends to help them
54. Which of the following can best reflect Scott’s opinion?
A. Happiness lies in accepting what you have.
B. Happiness originates from our success.
C. A smile always makes a man young.
D. Laughing can make you become fit.
55. The underlined word “tinkering” in the last paragraph probably means______.
A. forming good habits
B. getting used to the situation
C. making small changes
D. taking life as it is
