If you could sail around the world with only one companion, who would you choose? Guirec Soudee chose his pet chicken.
Soudee, a 24-year-old man from France, has been sailing around the world for two years. Every country he sails to, Monique, the hen is by his side. He found her in Spain. “I didn’t speak any Spanish and she didn’t speak any French, but we got along.” Soudee joked.
He had always wanted a companion for his journey and originally thought about bringing a cat before deciding it would be too much work to look after on a boat. Upon meeting Monique, Soudee realized a hen was the perfect choice. Not only does it cost
- 20 - / 20
little to raise Monique, but she lays eggs as well — something that’s always a plus in a situation where storing a lot of food can be a challenge. She lays about six eggs a week on average, even in cold climates like Greenland, where Soudee and Monique are docking now.
And what happens when the weather at sea gets rough? Usually Soudee lets Monique stay freely on the boat, but when the winds get terrible, he ensures she is safe in her hutch so she doesn’t fall out of his boat and into the sea. Another thing Soudee must care for is the rule in every country he visits. They had met with customs officials in Canada. He was permitted to keep her, but he knows they might not always be so lucky.
Although Monique can sometimes get on his nerves, Soudee says she is much better than a human companion aboard. “She follows me everywhere. All I need to do is shout ‘Monique!’ and she will come to me, sit on me and give me company.” he said.
24. What is so special about Soudee’s sailing?
A. He is the youngest to sail around the world.
B. He sails with a hen around the world.
C. He has sailed around the world for two years.
D. He communicates with others in Spanish.
25. Why does Soudee choose Monique as his companion?
- 20 - / 20
A.She adds more pleasure to his trip. B. She can help him store a lot of food.
C. She lays eggs and costs little to survive. D. She can understand him best.
26. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?
A. The experience with customs official. B. The way they survived on the boat.
C. The way they kept happy on the boat. D. The trouble they met on the way.
27. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Monique does a better job than humans.
B. Monique always annoys him.
C. Soudee enjoys Monique’s company a lot.
D. Soudee feels grateful for what Monique has done.

When and where dogs first began living side-side with humans are questions that have caused hot debate among scientists. There are a few hard facts that all agree on. These include that dogs were once wolves and they were the first animal to be domesticated(驯养)by humans. They came into lives some 15, 000 years ago, before the dawn of agriculture.
Beyond that, there is little agreement. The earliest bones
- 20 - / 20
that are unquestionable dogs and not wolves date from 14,000 years ago. However, 30, 000-year-old skulls that have been discovered in France and Belgium recently are not pure wolves and some scientists think they could be dogs.
With such puzzling evidence, many scientists are now turning to DNA to find out when and where dogs were first domesticated. It’s even possible to analyse DNA from ancient bones. Tiny pieces of the 30, 000-year-old skulls mentioned earlier are currently being studied, and another DNA study has already shown that ancient dogs preserved in the Alaskan ice-fields evolved (进化) from Asian wolves, not American ones.
But why were the animals domesticated in the first place? The most recent theory is that dogs domesticated themselves, initially(最初) living in and around our ancient villages to eat any food thrown out. Today, this is a way of life still shared by three-quarters of a billion unowned dogs worldwide
28. Which of the following is a hard fact of dogs?
A. They evolved from wolves.
B. They were originally used as farm animals.
C. They were first domesticated around 15,000 years ago.
D. They first began living with human in Europe.
29. Why does the writer mention the 30,000-year-old animals’
- 20 - / 20
skulls in Paragraph 2 ?
A. To suggest that dogs may have evolved much earlier.
B. To prove that dogs developed from Asian wolves.
C. To show that dogs were much larger in the past.
D. To argue that dogs were first kept in France and Belgium.
30. How did scientists determine the origins of the ancient dogs found in Alaska?
A. By analyzing the age of their bones. B. By examining the animals’ DNA.
C. By studying the shape of their skulls. D. By comparing them with other bones.
31. Why did dogs start living with humans?
A. Because they were trained to protect villages. B. Because they were trapped by humans.
C. Because they couldn’t survive in the wild. D. Because they were attracted by food.
D
The pen is more powerful than the sword. There have been many writers who use their pens to write things that they don’t really know. Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe was one of them.
She was born in the U.S.A. in 1811. One of her books not only made her famous but has been described as one that excited the
- 20 - / 20
world, and was helpful in causing a civil war and freeing the enslaved race. The civil war was the American Civil War of 1861, in which the Northern States fought the Southern States and finally won.
This book that shook the world was called Uncle Tom’s Cabin. There was a time when every English-speaking man, woman, and child had read this novel that did so much to stop slavery. Not many people read it today, but it is still very interesting, if only to show how a warm-hearted writer can arouse people’s sympathies. The author herself had neither been to the Southern States nor seen a slave. The Southern Americans were very angry at the book, which they said did not at all represent the true state of affairs, but the Northern Americans were widely excited over it, and were so inspired by it that they were ready to go to war to set the slaves free.
32. How old was Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe when her world famous book was published?
A. In her forties. B. In her fifties.
C. In her sixties. D. In her seventies.
33. What do we learn about Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe from the passage?
- 20 - / 20
A. Her novel caused the American Civil War. B. She wrote the novel based on her own experience.
C. Her book aroused people’s sympathies. D. She was better at writing than swinging a sword.
34. Why were the South Americans angry at the novel?
A. Because they were defeated in the Civil War.
B. Because they didn’t think the book represent the truth.
C. Because they hated the North Americans.
D. Because they treated the slaves without sympathy.
35. What does the writer intend to tell us?
A. The North would not have won without Mrs. Stowe’s book.
B. We needn’t use swords in war.
C. Literature and art are powerful.
D. A writer is more helpful in war than a soldier.

To forgive is a virtue (美德), but no one has ever said it is easy. When someone has deeply hurt you, it can be extremely difficult to let go of your hate. However, forgiveness is possible, and it can be surprisingly beneficial to your physical and mental health. People who forgive show less sadness, anger
- 20 - / 20
and stress and more hopefulness, according to a recent research.
36 Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. 37 You can take a couple of deep breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure: a beautiful scene in nature or someone you love.
Don’t wait for an apology. Many times the person who hurt you does not intend to apologize. He may have wanted to hurt you or he just doesn’t see things the same way. 38 Keep in mind that forgiveness does not necessarily mean becoming friends again with the person who upsets you.
Take the control away from your offender (冒犯者).Rethinking about your hurt gives power to the person who causes you pain. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you
39 If you understand your offender, you may realize that he or she was acting out of unawareness, fear and even love. You may want to write a letter to yourself from your offender’s point of view.
Don’t forget to forgive yourself. 40 But it can rob you of your self-confidence if you don’ t do it.
A. Why should you forgive?
B. How should you start to forgive?
- 20 - / 20
C. Recognize the benefits of forgiveness.

E. For some people, forgiving themselves is the biggest challenge.
F. To make your anger die away, try a simple stress-management technique.
