Commuting (通勤) or going online completely is not an option for me. I can't drive a car. And I am studying journalism, which is difficult to practice with online-only classes. Few people are on campus. The school is doing phased move-ins. For the safety of students and staff, you have to fill out charts and forms telling the school exactly where you go and when you will move in. Housing was not a big concern because the on-campus population has been halved. I moved in at the earliest time I could: Aug. 10. During that time, the only people I saw were joggers wheezing up the many hills around my school. To get my double room, I had to fill out an abundance of paperwork. I agreed that in the event that I get COVID-19, I'll move to a single room completely lacking in human contact, besides food delivery and online classes. And then there was the food situation. It's unknown whether dining options will be open in time for our classes next week, and if they are, how they will be handled. The tables I spent many hours sitting at with friends have all but disappeared. There are plenty of floor signs at the canteen for all students to follow. Instead of sitting down to eat, it was grab-and-go. Pick whatever you want, and an employee will pack it for you in a box and a plastic bag. But here on campus, it's the calm before the storm. Somehow, society hasn't collapsed. Cats and dogs are not raining from the sky. Pigs aren't flying. Right now, it's like a nature reserve. I've seen more birds, deer and squirrels than humans here. My bizarre (怪异的) college situation leaves me with sleepless nights. Much like this whole pandemic (疫情),everything is just one day at a time. 4. What are students from Montclair State University required to do? A. Report their whereabouts. B. Fill out application forms. C. Take online courses at dorms. D. Move in as soon as possible. 5. Why did the author feel confident of getting a double room? A. He was infected with COVID-19. B. There were not so many applicants. C. He came earlier than any other students. D. He submitted all the necessary paperwork. 6. What can we learn about the food situation? A. Food will be delivered by an employee. B. Students will have more choices next week. C. Students are not allowed to eat at the canteen. D. The canteen provides more tables and floor signs. 7. Which word best describes the author's attitude to the future? A. Optimistic. B. Concerned. C. Relaxed. D. Indifferent. A 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第二段的“For the safety of students and staff, you have to fill out charts and forms telling the school exactly where you go and when you will move in.( 为了学生和工作人员 的安全,你必须填表格,告诉学校你要去哪里和什么时候入住。)” 故选 A。 根据第三段的“Housing was not a big concern because the on-campus population has been halved.( 住房问题不是一个大问题,因为校园人口已经减少了一半。)” 根据第四段的“Instead of sitting down to eat, it was grab-and-go. Pick whatever you want, and an employee will pack it for you in a box and a plastic bag.( 学生不是坐下来吃东西, 而是抓起就走。挑选你想要的任何东西,工作人员会帮你把它装进一个盒子和一个塑料袋 里。)”可推断,学生不允许在餐厅吃东西。故选 C。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“But here on campus, it's the calm before the storm.( 但是,在 校园,是暴风雨前的平静。)”和最后一段的“My bizarre (怪异的) college situation leaves me with sleepless nights.(我的怪异的大学处境让我彻夜难眠。)” B。 C You know marketers follow you all around the Internet, but you might be surprised to learn who or what else is keeping track of your every move. You are being stalked (跟踪) everywhere you go. In your car. On your morning walk. Even in your own home—by your own TV. In our hyperconnected world, where your phone is always with you, information is being collected—and shared—every nanosecond. “So what?” you say. “I have nothing to hide.” Don't be so sure. As privacy expert Bennet Cyphers told a reporter for the New York Times's Privacy Project, “The only people I've heard say ‘Who cares?’ are people who don't understand the scope of the problem.” The problem is that while corporations and data brokers are hoovering up all the information they can lay their hands on, there are no laws governing what they can do with that information—or whom they can sell it to. That includes things you thought were private, such as health and financial data, as well as your beliefs and daily habits. Someone knowing that you ordered three extra-large pizzas with the works for dinner last Friday night may seem harmless enough, but there's a deeper principle at play. As cyber expert Bruce Schneier puts it, privacy is not just about freedom from embarrassment. “Privacy is an inherent human right, and a requirement for maintaining the human condition with dignity and respect,” he says. Yet we do little to block the spies. We click “I Agree” without reading the user agreements. We say we'll do one of those privacy checkups one day, but we never quite get around to it. And that means your personal information could be used against you in the future in ways you can't imagine today. 8. What is the problem discussed in the text? A. People don't do security checkups often enough. B. People's freedom is being harmed by the Internet. C. People don't care enough about online privacy leaks. D. People's private information is being collected illegally. 9. What does the underlined phrase “hoovering up” probably mean? A. Reviewing. B. Offering. C. Gathering D. Analyzing. 10. What does Bruce Schneier say about privacy? A. It allows people more freedom. B. It is about avoiding embarrassment. C. It calls for dignity and respect. D. It is essential to living with dignity. 11. What might the author write about in the following paragraphs? A. What we can do to protect our privacy. B. When the problem is expected to be solved. C. Who should take responsibility for data safety. D. How companies protect consumers' information. C 9. C 10. D 11. 根据第二段“In our hyperconnected world, where your phone is always with you, information is being collected—and shared—every nanosecond.(在我们这个超连接的世界里, 你的手机总是和你在一起,每一纳秒都在收集和分享信息。)”和第三段 “”‘So what?’” you say. ‘I have nothing to hide.’”(“那又怎样?” 根据第四段划线词后面“there are no laws governing what they can do with that information—or whom they can sell it to. 根据倒数第二段““Privacy is an inherent human right, and a requirement for maintaining the human condition with dignity and respect,” he says.( 他说,隐私是一项固有的 人权,也是以尊严和尊重维护人类生存状况的必要条件。)” A。 D Turtles have a problem. They are delicious. And so are their eggs. That has led to the eggs of marine turtles being poached (偷猎). To deal with the problem Kim Williams-Guillen and Helen Pheasey of the University of Kent, have come up with a handy gadget (小装置). It is a global-positioning-system (GPS) transmitter (发射机) enclosed in a plastic shell made by 3D printing. The result looks like a turtle's egg and weighs about the same. Dug up and carried away by poachers, it can lead the police to those poachers' bases of operation. As they report this week in Current Biology, Dr Williams-Guillén and Dr Pheasey have now tested their invention in Costa Rica. They placed a decoy egg into each of 101 turtle nests on four beaches where poaching is a problem. The decoys remained inactive until their shells were exposed to the air. At that moment—presumed to signal the arrival of poachers—the “egg” in question starts broadcasting its location once an hour. In all, 25 of the decoys were poached. They told different stories. Some travelled just a few kilometres, with one ending up at a bar 2km away from the nest it was taken from, where its signal abruptly ended. Others went quite a distance. One, for example, was carried 137km inland, to a supermarket. To make sure that they, themselves, were not harming what they were intending to protect, the researchers monitored all of the decoy-laden nests which had survived the attentions of poachers and compared these nests' outputs of hatchlings with those of 44 other surviving nests that had no decoy in them. Both sorts of nest had the same hatching rates, suggesting that adding a decoy did not affect the development of the eggs it was hidden among. Given the success of their project, Dr Williams-Guillen and Dr Pheasey propose that the idea should be used more widely for turtles. They also suggest that similar decoys might help protect the eggs of other endangered reptiles—and birds—that are collected and traded illegally. 12. What is the purpose of the new invention? A. To make man-made turtle eggs. B. To track the poachers of turtle eggs. C. To protect turtle eggs from poachers. D. To locate turtle eggs and send signals. 13. What do we know about the decoy eggs that researchers have tested? A. About a quarter of them were poached. B. They appeared different from real turtle eggs. C. Their shells would break if exposed to the air. D. They gave warnings about approaching poachers. 14. What do Dr Williams-Guilén and Dr Pheasey think of their invention? A. It may cause widespread damage to turtle eggs . B. It will help raise people's environmental awareness. C. It can be applied to more wildlife conservation fields. D. It needs further improvement before being put into practice. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. ANew Device May Help Stop the Robbery of Turtle Eggs B. Researchers Propose a New Idea to Save Poached Turtle Eggs C. GPS Will Update Researchers on the Developments of Turtle Eggs D. Decoy Eggs Can Help Turtle Eggs Survive the Attention of Poachers 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. 根据文章第二段最后一句“Dug up and carried away by poachers, it can lead the police to those poachers' bases of operation.(一旦这种装置被偷蛋者挖出来并带走,警察便可追 踪至偷蛋者的大本营。)” 根据文章第三段“ They placed a decoy egg into each of 101 turtle nests on four beaches where poaching is a problem. 故选 A。 根据文章最后一段“Given the success of their project, Dr Williams-Guillen and Dr Pheasey propose that the idea should be used more widely for turtles. They also suggest that similar decoys might help protect the eggs of other endangered reptiles—and birds—that are collected and traded illegally. 所以“ANew Device May Help Stop the Robbery of Turtle Eggs”作为文章的标题最为合适。 故选 A。 Bad breath happens to everyone at times. ___16___You can prevent bad breath by developing good oral health habits and making changes in your diet and lifestyle. What luck! I started by thinking of getting the bank work out of the way. The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, paid little attention to my polite “Happy New Year” as usual. He nodded and I sat in front of him. Minutes passed and nothing happened. Then very hesitantly I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him. He was busy filling up entries in his register. After a few minutes, he took my form and from his cabinet he took out a very thick file from which he started filling in my details. I sat there wondering why we had computerized banking if we were still filling in forms and registers. After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I uttered (说) the words, I felt as if a bomb had fallen on him. He shouted, “Nothing is done, it will take time!” Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt how this man must be feeling, when customers like me came always in a hurry to get their work done. He had been working at this counter for God-knows-how-many years. We do not even feel the need to thank him for being there. He must be feeling so annoyed that “here comes another person who will push me for doing his work first.” On an instinct (本能) I told him, “Sir, you please have your tea, I am not in a hurry.” This man, who I had been seeing for the last few years, suddenly looked up at me and for the first time we had eye contact—he had never made eye contact earlier. I saw a different person there, another human being who was as hard-pressed for time as I always am. I saw both of us sailing in the same boat. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ ________________ He really touched my heart with his wise words. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________ 【答案】I saw both of us sailing in the same boat.
