山西壶关县 2017 高考英语阅读理解一轮编选(五)
【由江西省吉安一中 2014 模拟改编】
阅读理解。阅读下面短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
To Whom It May Concern:
Your address was forwarded to us by How to Magazine. All of us here think The International Institute
of Not Doing Much is the best organization in the world. You know how to avoid unnecessary
activities!
As a matter of fact, we closely followed the advice in your article. First, we replaced all our
telephones with carrier pigeons. Simply removing the jingle of telephones and replacing them with
the pleasant sounds of birds has had a remarkable effect on everyone. Besides, birds are cheaper
than telephone service. After all, we are a business. We have to think of the bottom line. As
a side benefit, the birds also fertilize the lawn outside the new employees’ sauna(桑拿房).
Next, we sold the computers off to Stab, Grab, Grit, and Nasty, a firm of lawyers nearby. Our
electricity bill went way down. Big savings! The boss is impressed. We have completely embraced
paper technology. Now that we all use pencils, doodling is on the increase, and the quality of
pencil woman ship is impressive, as you can tell from my handwriting in this letter. By the way,
if you can, please send this letter back to us. We can erase and reuse it. Just tie it to Maggie’s
leg and she’ll know where to take it.
Now it’s very calm and quiet here. You can notice the difference. No more loud chatter on the
telephones! All we hear is the scratching of pencil on paper, the sound of pigeons, and the delivery
of inter-office correspondence by paper airplane.
Wonderful! I’ve always wanted to work for an insurance company ever since I was a little girl.
Now it’s perfect.
Sincerely yours,
Eleanor Lightly
Spokeswoman and Company Hair Stylist

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出最佳选项。
Who won China’s first gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics? It was Li Jianrou.
The 27-year-old finished first in the women’s 500m short track speed skating on Feb 13. The race
was full of drama. Three athletes fell over because of an accident caused by Elise Christie of
Britain in the second turn and Li became the surprise winner.
Three-time defending champion Wang Meng of China missed the Olympics after breaking her ankle
last month. Li had little experience in the race, where getting off to a quick Start is important.
But she kept her cool while everyone else was falling around her.
“I feel very lucky,” Li said through a translator.
She and one of her coaches cried tears of joy after China joined South Korea as the only
countries to win the same short track event four Olympics in a row. The Koreans won the 3,000
relay in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006.
“I cried because I was so excited,” Li said. “My coach told me this medal is for Wang Meng
as well, so I felt very moved.”

Li’s victory made up for the surprising fall of teammate Fan Kexin in the semifinals. In the
semis, Fan didn’t even complete the first lap of the race, catching her left blade(冰刀)as
she skated near the front. She crashed on all fours into the crew of workers who maintain the
ice between races. They climbed onto the top of the pads to avoid being injured by Fan’s long,
sharp blades.
Arianna Fontana of Italy took the silver and Park Seung-hi of South Korea earned the bronze.
1. Who made a mistake causing three athletes to fall over in the final?
A. Li Jianrou B. Elise Christie C. Arianna Fontana D. Fan Kexin

“Tiger Mother”parenting raises media storm.A new book written by a selfdescribed Chinese
descent(血统)on her superstrict parenting—Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother has raised media storm
and fierce debates in the U.S.
Amy Chua is a Yale Law School professor and the mother of two teenage girls. She is the daughter
of immigrants of Chinese descent. In the Chinese culture, the tiger symbolizes strength and power. In
her book Ms.Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters. For example, her
daughters,Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to attend a sleepover,be in a school play,
watch TV or play computer games. They couldn't choose their own afterclass activities or get any
grade less than an A.They had to play piano or violin—and no other musical instruments. She writes
that if a Chinese child gets a B—which she says“would never happen”—there would be“a
screaming, hairtearing explosion”.She describes making her 7yearold daughter play a piano
piece perfectly—yelling and not letting her leave the bench even to use the bathroom—until it
was.
Many people have criticized Chua. Some say her parenting methods were abusive. She even admits that

her husband, who is not Chinese, objects to her parenting style. But she says that was the way
her parents raised her and her three sisters.
Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books about parenting, says Amy Chua's parenting style is
not limited to Chinese families. She says it represents a traditional way of parenting among
immigrants seeking a better future for their children. But she also sees a risk. When children have
no time to be social or to follow their own interests, they might not develop other skills that
they need to succeed in life.Stacy DeBroff advised parents not to just repeat the way they were
raised.
Alison Lo,an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Washington's Bothell campus
said,“I don't think Amy is advocating a best practice of parenting style,or that success and
achievements are critical yardsticks(衡量标准)of a good life. But I can imagine how strong her
daughters' college applications are going to be.For many parents whose dreams are seeing their
kids graduating from a competitive university,Amy is sharing with the readers that it is achievable
by persistent, dedicated parental guidance,”Lo said in an interview with Julie Muhlstein,a
columnist with the USbased Heraldnet.com.
“In that sence,a young adult's giftedness can be born,or made,”Lo continued.

A.She is an easygoing woman.

A.Playing the piano.
B.Playing the guitar.
C.Dating with boys.

4.Alison Lo concluded that________.
A.persistent, dedicated parental guidance is the best parenting style
B.parents should respect children's personalities

这个意义上讲,年轻人的天赋可以是天生的,也可以通过后天严格的教养而激发”,故 D 项正确。A 项与原

是“最好的”。
答案 D

Former Irish President Mary Robinson was just making a polite conversation with an Ethiopian (埃
塞俄比亚的) teenager about her wedding day.The 16yearold had already been married for a
year.“She looked at me with the saddest eyes and said,‘I had to drop out of school,’ ” Robinson
said in a telephone interview.“That conveyed to me the reality,” said Robinson, the first woman
to serve as Ireland’s president and former U.N.High Commissioner for Human Rights.“Her life,
as far as she is concerned, had more or less ended.”
Robinson said keeping girls in school was one of the most important things policymakers could
do to address the coming challenges of an everincreasing population, predicted by the United
Nations to reach 7 billion soon.“European countries are concerned about aging populations,
but this is much less of an issue than the huge number of people which we are going to see over
the next 40 years when the population goes from 7 billion to 9 billion,”she said.“Almost all
of that increase will be in poor developing countries,so that we have a very big challenge.”

Africa. In May,the United Nations projected the world population would reach 9.3 billion in 2050
and 10.1 billion by 2100.Much of that growth will come from Africa, where the population is growing
at 2.3 percent a year—more than double Asia’s 1 percent growth rate.If that rate stays consistent,
which is not certain,Africa’s population will reach 3.6 billion by 2100 from the present 1 billion.
Joel Cohen,a professor of population studies at Rockefeller University and Columbia University
in New York, said universal secondary education offered a way to reduce population in high birth
rate regions. In addition to providing information about birth control,a secondary education
teaches women to reduce their own fertility, improve the health of their children and allows them
to move from a mindset of having many children in the hope that some will survive to improve the
quality of each child’s life,Cohen wrote in the journal Nature.
