When I was younger, bedtime was always my favourite part of the day. Wearing soft pajamas and with
Ian, my stuffed monkey, in my arms, I felt no pressure at all.
I named Ian after my uncle when I compared Ian’s long arms and legs to his. One night I ran up
to Uncle Ian at a family party and told him I had named my monkey after him. His eyebrows wrinkled
in confusion, then a chuckle(哈哈笑)escaped his lips. I guess he didn’t understand how important
it was to me.
Even if Uncle Ian didn’t think my monkey was special, I certainly did. I dressed him in a white
baby nightgown. My mother thought that Ian was the best-dressed stuffed animal in the world. Yes,
he was certainly a fashionable creature. The strong cologne(科隆香水)I used on him years ago makes
him still smell “pretty”.
For a long time, Ian went everywhere with me. He was my best friend, and I told him everything.
But when I turned twelve, I realized I was too old for stuffed animals. I thought people would think
I was babyish, so I put him in the cupboard with the rest of my teddy bears and dolls. I begged
him to understand why I was doing this, but at the same time I longed to talk to him again.
It took me several years to realize that it was OK to miss Ian. I know now that maturity(成熟)
doesn’t only mean growing up and taking on more responsibility. It also means holding on to your
childhood and acting young sometimes.
Ian has been with me since I was six years old holding him in my arms connects me to my past and
my present as I continue to grow and understand myself.
1. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A.Bedtime used to be the writer’s favourite part of the day because of the stuffed monkey.
B. Uncle Ian liked the stuffed monkey as much as the writer.
C. The writer used to carry the monkey with her wherever she went.
D. Years later the writer realized that it was not wrong to miss Monkey Ian.
2. The writer loved Monkey Ian deeply because __________.
A. he could understand her B. he was a fashionable monkey
C. he could talk with her D. he was her most honest listener
3. We can learn from the text that the writer believes ________.
2
A. keeping stuffed animals is babyish
B. maturity doesn’t mean growing up and taking on more responsibility
C. one should keep to his childhood and act young sometimes even when he has grown up
D. human beings should be kind to animals
4. We can infer from the text that _________.
A. the writer is still a teenager
B. the writer is now a middle-aged woman
C. Monkey Ian got angry for being left alone
D.Uncle Ian has a monkey-like face
由第一段 “…bedtime was always my favourite part of the
day. ..my stuffed monkey, in my arms, I felt no pressure at all.”
“For a long time, Ian went everywhere with me.” 由倒数第二段首句 “It took me
several years to realize that it was OK to miss Ian.”
His eyebrows wrinkled in confusion, then a chuckle escaped his lips. I guess
he didn’t understand how important it was to me.”
由第四段 “He was my best friend, and I told him everything.”
结合文章第一段首句 “When I was younger…”
和最后一段 “…and my present as I continue to grow and understand myself.”

Going on holiday not only makes you feel good while you’re there—you gain the health benefits
for months,new research shows.

holidaymakers deteriorated_by 14 percent.
The study also found the ability of vacationers to recover from stress-known as the stress
-resilience test-improved by 29 percent. There was a 71 percent fall in stress resilience scores
among workers. Tests showed a fall in blood glucose levels, reducing the risk of diabetes, trimmer
waistlines and enhanced mood and energy levels, with the effects sustained for at least two weeks
after returning home.
The Holiday Health Experiment was conducted by tour operator Kuoni and Nuffield Health, the
UK’s largest healthcare charity.

In his new show, Evan Ruggiero plays guitar, sings pop standards and shows everybody his fine
footwork. What makes all of these especially unusual is that Ruggiero, 24, has only one leg.
When he was a 19-year-old musical theater student at New Jersey’s Montclair State University,
Ruggiero had a rare bone cancer in his right leg. Finally his leg would have to be amputated(截)
below the knee.
Such a setback could have easily ended the career of a less tough person, but Ruggiero, who
has been dancing since he was five, now puts the experience into his performance. His show, “The
One-Legged Song and Dance Man: Volume 3”, explains how he returned to dance just 18 months after
the amputation. His dance now relies on the use of a peg leg(假肢),he explains.
The secret to his surprising success, he says, was being a “stubborn” patient who refused
to give up on his dance and performing studies, despite the advice of his doctor.
“It was a real setback, but after it was all over, I said, ‘You know what? I need to pick
up right there I left off and continue my career,’” Ruggiero said.
Ruggiero has come to view his peg leg as an instrument. “Tap dancers — they’re always calling
themselves musicians, and their feet are their instrument,” he said.
Noting that many audience members will never have seen a one-legged dancer before coming to
his show, Ruggiero says he won’t shy away from the physical “weakness” his performance shows
because of his condition.
“A lot of people have come up to me, and they always say, ‘You’re such a role model and
an inspiration,’ ”he said. “I’m honored when people say that, of course, but I’m just trying

Four Must-See Route 66(66 号公路) Attractions
The United States is full of odd roadside attractions. Route 66 is home to some of the oldest
and most known attractions of them all. Here are four attractions you should see along the Mother
Road:
1. Paul Bunyan and a Hot Dog
Route 66 travelers pass by many fiberglass giants(巨人) right along the road. These giants were
a popular form of advertising in the 1960s. Many of them stood in front of service stations. They

held car parts, such as mufflers. The collection of Route 66 giants became known as “Muffler
Men”. Businesses hoped the strange statues would get travelers’ attention.
The first fiberglass giant was a “Paul Bunyan” figure, built in the early 1960s. It is said
that Paul Bunyan is a famous wood worker.
2. Crown Candy Kitchen and Jamaica Ray
Crown Candy Kitchen has been serving Route 66 travelers from the very beginning. It is just a
few short blocks from the 66 path through St. Louis, Missouri. The family-run soda fountain shop
opened more than 100 years ago, and has been making candies and meals ever since.
On weekends, people sometimes wait in line for a table at Crown Candy for over an hour. Luckily
there is free entertainment right outside. Jamaica Ray, a local folk artist, creates unusual
sculptures.
3. The World's Largest Rocking Chair
Fanning, Missouri, is home to one of the strangest Route 66 attractions. Just off the road sits
an almost 13-meter-tall rocking chair.
The structure was completed in 2008 on the first of April, or April Fool’s Day.
At one time the chair actually rocked. But officials decided it had to be still to be safe for
ever. People are not permitted to climb the chair. We think, however, that it probably happens
once in a while when no one is watching.
4. Big Texan's Steak Challenge
Few places better represent the common expression “Everything’s Bigger in Texas” than the Big
Texan Steak Ranch. Since 1960, it has appealed to travelers with big appetites -- and a big love
of beef.
It is hard to miss the huge yellow restaurant -- or the giant cow statue that sits out front.
The cow advertises Big Texan’s special deal, and what has made this steak ranch famous: a “free”
