China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country. Back then everyone
seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year,
I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around.
For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors —silver, green,
red, blue, yellow, whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and
ride even on sidewalks .Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my
great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly .To be safe, I stayed with a “ pack ” of bikers while cars on the streets came
running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United
States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through
my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people. Biking made me feel
alive.
21. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A .Because they are traditional and safe.
B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C.Because they are colorful and available.
D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.
22. The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ________ .
A .to ride it for fun
B.to use it for transport
C.to experience local culture
D.to improve his riding skills
B
A popular saying goes, “ Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. ” However,
that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter if the words come
from someone else or ourselves-the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. But we really shouldn't
be, because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This self-talk helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down.
Beware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only
speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next
time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying, “ Good job ! ”
Often, words come out of our mouths without our thinking about the effects they will have; but we should be
aware that our words cause certain responses to others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might
use warm friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or we
can use harsh, critical language, which will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive. Words possess power
because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said
to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves :Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to
say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.
Words possess power both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak
positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊 ) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words
destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal ?The choice is ours.
25. The author argues in the first paragraph that .
A. words have lasting effects on us B. words will never hurt us at all
C. positive effects last longer than negative effects
D. negative words may let us down
26. Why should we not feel embarrassed when talking to ourselves ?
A. Almost everybody has the habit of talking to oneself.
B. Talking to ourselves is believed to be good for our health.
C. Talking to ourselves helps us to solve all the problems.
D. It does harm to have "self-talk" when we are alone.

If you plan on visiting to Fiji, you are probably looking for some fun things to do. Below are four unusual
places.
The Poseidon Resort
The Poseidon resort is an underwater resort that gives visitors a beautiful view of sea life. This resort covers
255 acres. It ’ s covered and surrounded by a lagoon (咸水湖 ) that covers 5,000 acres and is about 90 feet under
water, giving you a beautiful view of sea life right before your eyes. This resort even has a hotel for those who
would prefer to have the unusual experience of sleeping and waking up to the beautiful scenery all around them.
The Sabeto Mud Pool
If you ’ re looking for something unusual to do, you can ’ t pass up the mud pool at Sabeto. It is located in a

Fire walking in Fiji is believed to have originated on the island of Beau. Fire walking is when you walk on

preparation and strict rules that travelers follow in order to do this safely.
The Fiji Museum
The Fiji museum is unusual due to all the amazing artifacts you ’ ll see dating back 3,000-4,000 years. This
museum has a certain attraction that makes it funny — a shoe. It ’ s been said that a man named Thomas Baker was
eaten by the locals several centuries ago and the only thing left was his shoe. This unusual museum is a great idea

Anna Craig, 11, has a paper doll covered with stickers (标签) . Each sticker is labeled with a word such as
creative, cheerful, smart or kind. “ We choose stickers that best describe us and put them on our dolls," explains
Anna. "All these words are what makes me beautiful!"
The activity is part of a program called Beautiful Me. The Hance Family Foundation, which was created to
honor three sisters killed in a car accident, offers the program for free to schools. The program ’ s goals are to help
girls and young women build healthy levels of self-esteem and develop skills for handling problems and
relationships with others. Beautiful Me explains that self-esteem means how you feel about yourself and what you
think your value is as a person.
"Girls of all ages benefit from recognizing what makes each of us valuable and different," says Kate Tuffy,
who helped create Beautiful Me. "Our goal is to offer the program to as many girls as possible across the United
States." About 6,000 girls have benefited from it due to her efforts.
Beautiful Me organizers train teachers to present the program material to small groups of girls. It includes
hands-on art activities, role-playing games about understanding body language and discussions on how to build
friendships. Schools and groups present the program when they are ready.
"The Beautiful Me program helps girls understand their feelings, solve problems and get along better in and
out of school. Girls and women who have built healthy levels of self-esteem are more likely to be better friends to
others and know how to solve conflicts," says Tuffy.
Anna says she has learned all of that from the program. But most importantly, she has learned to appreciate
the special qualities in people and that it ’ s important to feel good about yourself. "Whe n you feel good about
yourself," Anna says, "it is easy to make others feel good, too!

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 (注意:
此题 36-40 的答案要涂到卡上 71-75)
Never Too Late to Change Your Life
It isn't too late for you to improve something, your life that you really want to change. No matter what age
you are at. 36 Start there. Four steps will make it easier for you to get started _37 Maybe you already
know it. It could be your social life, your health or money situation.
Take time to focus on this because if you really want something then it becomes a lot easier to keep going.
Choose one thing or habit to focus on for now. If you have found several things or habits you would like to
focus on, then choose to focus on just one at a time. 38 You'll probably not have the time and energy to change
three things at once even though you really hope and think you can.
Take small steps. This is very important. The feeling that something is too big or difficult is one of the
most common things to hold people back from taking action. 39 The plan sounds so good in your head. But
when you carry it out then you can't really take much action or move as fast as you thought.
40 Don' t get stuck in planning. Or think that you will get started tomorrow or next week. Get the ball
rolling instead. Do that today by just taking one small and practical step towards what you want.
A. Why am I telling you this?
B. Make a small change if possible.
C. Think about what you really want to change.
D. You can do what you can with what you have right now.
E. On the other hand, people also tend to think highly of their own power.
F. Ask yourself: what is one small step I can take right now to get the ball rolling?
G. Spreading yourself too much always leads to failure because life tends to get in the way.

Last Sunday, I went sightseeing with my friends in the Fairy Lake Park. The park was full with freshness and
beauty of spring, with the sun shining and birds sing. When I was enjoying the fantastic scenery around,
something unpleasant caught my eyes. A young couple in a boat are eating, talking and laughing loudly as if we
were the only people in the world. What was worse, they spat and even threw rubbish into the lake, total ignoring
the noticeable sign “ No Littering ” nearby. What shame!
Such behavior left me deep in thought. Because all visitors to the Fairy Lake Park do as the couple did so, the
lake will be seriously polluted or soon turned into a huge dustbin.
