We travel the world to experience an unfamiliar culture. It's an added bonus when the destination happens to be home to several cultures, thanks to its diverse
population.
Toronto
Toronto happens to be one of the most diverse in the world. In fact, nearly half of Toronto's residents were born in another country. This cultural mix is most apparent in the city's community pockets, including Chinatown, Greektown, Little Italy etc. And although English is most widely spoken here, the streets are constantly filled with over 140 different languages.
Los Angeles
Los Angeles is known and loved for its varied landscape, which offers opportunities to swim at the beach, hike in the park and explore a lively city all on the same day. That diversity also extends to its population — people from approximately 140 countries, speaking 86 different languages call the City of Angeles home where visitors can get a taste of multicultural mix.
Sydney
English-speaking visitors to Sydney won't have any trouble buying their tickets to the Opera House or ordering up some Aussie barbecue, as it's the main language used here. That said, it's not the only language you may overhear. Approximately 250 different dialects are spoken in this Australian city. This makes sense, given that 40 percent of the population were born overseas.
Singapore
Singapore might be small, but it packs in a lot of diversity. The Southeast Asian destination has four official languages — English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil—and approximately 40 percent of its population were born abroad.

One of our worst nightmares as a parent is finding out that our teenager has started smoking or taking drugs. Usually our first reaction is to be angry, but most of us can remember what it was like when we were at school and just how powerful peer(同龄人)pressure can be. Once we are faced with such a case, we ought to be understanding and supportive and should try to help our children through the problems.
Many teenagers are attracted to drugs at some stage in their life and research shows that as many as 15% of all teenagers have tried drug taking of some sort during their young lives. Besides the usual peer pressure and the constant need to be "cool” or to have “fun", many teenagers are simply curious about the excitement or "high” they can achieve from taking drugs. That excitement is doubled by the simple fact that they are doing something illegal that we as parents would consider dangerous.
On a more serious note, they might be getting into drugs as an escape. Perhaps they are unhappy at school or there have been recent changes at home that may have unsettled them. In this case, drug taking can be more worrying as they may start to rely on it as a form of escapism and start to take drugs more regularly.
If you think your child might be smoking or taking drugs, it's best to deal with it straight away. It's easy to turn a blind eye and sweep the issues under the carpet in the hope that they'll gradually stop, but without your intervention(干预),the problem may not disappear.
24. When parents find their children are smoking or taking drugs, they should
A. talk about it with their teacher
B. punish them severely
C. help them out of the addiction
D. let them stay at home and not go to school
25. Which of the following is NOT a reason why teenagers try taking drugs?
A. They are under great peer pressure.
B. They want to stay slim (保持苗条)
C .They think it is cool to take drugs.
D. They are unhappy at school.
26. What can be inferred from the text?
A. Children whose parents take drugs are more likely to take drugs.
B. Children are curious about things they should not do.
C. Most students are unhappy at school.
D. Children who take drugs will gradually stop themselves.
27. What does the underlined phrase, "sweep the issues under the ' in the last paragraph mean?
A. To put off dealing with the matter.
B. To take quick action.
C. To persuade somebody patiently.
D. To punish somebody severely.
C
If you want to be productive, you must complete work. Almost everything we do has many stages to completion and in many situations, you don't actually create value until you finish the last stage. Farmers can't sell their grain until it is harvested. Automakers can't sell cars that have made it 90% of the way through the assembly line (生产线). Most employers aren't going to pay you for having a degree unless you finished the last class and graduated.
Now all those things require starting, but if you have work in progress, the most valuable thing you can do is to pick something and finish it. Finishing is where you start benefiting from the value you've created. I've noticed that many successful people aren't the ones who are the smallest or have the best ideas. They are often the ones who do the best job of taking an idea and completing it. A good idea folly carried out is better than a great idea that never gets completed.
Does this mean you need to finish everything you start ? Not necessarily, but if you don't think something is worth finishing, be honest with yourself and terminate the project: Don't leave hundreds of half finished efforts lying around physically or mentally acting like you are going to come back and pick them up. If you need to drop something , do so strategically and intentionally. If you've put significant effort into a project, you may still benefit from finishing it even if you wouldn't start it again based on changed circumstances. For example, if you are in your last few months before graduating from college and realize you don't want to career in what you are majoring in, you probably should go ahead and graduate because there is significant value in having the degree--- even if you don't intend to actually work in that field.
What projects do you have that are currently in progress? Can you find something and finish it?
28. Why do many people become successful according to the author?
A. They make ideas fully completed
B. They have the best ideas
C. They start things smoothly
D. They are the smartest
29. What does the underlined word "terminate" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. End B. Develop C. Plan D. Support
30. According to the author, which of the following is the correct way of creating value?
A. A man decides to finish all he starts to do
B. A college student chooses to study until he gets his degree
C. Farmers hurry to sell their crops before they are ripe
D. A student keeps a half-filled stamp album around for future use
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. It is Easier Said than Done
B. Well Begun is Half Done
C. Planning vs. Performing
D. Finishing vs. Starting

With the Covid-19 virus sweeping the globe, die science on quitting smoking offers welcome news for smokers who want to build up their defenses in case they contract the virus. Though it may still take many months for a smokers lungs to heal from damage caused by long-term smoking, your health can noticeably improve in the days and weeks after quitting in ways that could make a difference against the virus. Covid-19 creates an added sense of urgency, and there’s enough reason to believe that quitting smoking during the pandemic(流行病)could increases your opportunities of fighting off the virus.
If you make the decision to quit, the cilia((纤毛)in your lungs are one of the first parts of your body to heal. These hair-like projections wave back and forth like a brush as air moves in and out of your lungs. They help your body fight off colds and infection. They also help clear mucus(黏液),so if they're not functioning as well as they should, mucus can build up in the lungs. Your body's tendency to cough during an infection helps inspire the bodily process of clearing out mucus, That's vital in fighting the Covid-19 condition. The elderly are at a greater risk for too much lung fluid that often limits breathing following coronavirus infection because they don't have a strong enough cough to clear it up.
A second short-term gain from quitting smoking comes from reducing ongoing inflammation(炎症)in your body, which can make you infect Covid-19 more easily. Having your lungs in as good of shape as you can in case of a coronavirus infection is key.
Besides lung-related issues, quitting smoking can also deliver healthy benefits to the heart that could help prevent possible heart attacks, which are another cause of death in Covid-19 cases. After you quit smoking, your blood becomes thinner and less possible to setting. Heart attacks are less likely. One reason this happens is because smoking makes it harder for the heart to distribute blood throughout the body.
32. What is the use of the lung cilia?
A. Reducing breathing difficulty. B. Killing the Covid-19 virus.
C. Predicting lung infections. D. Cleaning up the lungs.
33. Why are the old at higher risk to the coronavirus?
A. There is too much mucus in their lungs.
B. They cannot go out during the pandemic.
C. Most of them are heavy smokers for years.
D. They are lacking in the care of their children.
34. What good does quitting smoking do to heart?
A. Strengthen the heart muscle. B. Make the blood flow smoother.
C. Turn blood to be much thicker. D. Speed the heartbeat up apparently.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. Protecting the smokers' lungs to heal from damage.
B. Ways to make a difference against coronaviruses.
C. The Covid-19 virus is threatening humans worldwide.
D. Quitting smoking can help defend the Covid-19.
