He met her at a party. She was so outstanding, with many boys around her, while he was so ordinary, with nobody paying attention to him.
At the end of the party, he invited her to have coffee with him.She was surprised, but out of politeness, she agreed.
They sat in a nice coffee shop.He was too nervous to say anything, and she felt uncomfortable, thinking, “Please let me go home.”
Suddenly he asked the waiter, “Would you please give me some salt? I’d like to put it in my coffee.”
Everybody stared at him.So strange! His face turned red, but, still, he put the salt in his coffee and drank it.
She asked him curiously, “Why do you have this hobby?”
He replied, “When I was a little boy, I was living near the sea.I liked playing in the sea, and I could feel the taste of the sea, just like the taste of the salty coffee. Now every time I have the salty coffee, I always think of my childhood. I miss so much my hometown and my parents who are still living there.”
While saying that he couldn’t hold back his tears. She was deeply touched. That’s his true feeling, from the bottom of his heart.A man who can speak out his homesickness must be a man who loves home, cares about home, and has responsibility for his family.
Then she also started to speak about her faraway hometown, her childhood, and her family. That was a really nice talk, also a beautiful beginning of their story.
They continued to date. She found that actually he was a man who met all her demands: he was kindhearted, warm and careful. He was such a good person but she almost missed him!
Thanks to his salty coffee! Then the story went on just like every beautiful love story: the princess married the prince, and then they were living in happiness...And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in the coffee.

In 2004, my husband, Joe and I worked in a design company in Arizona. One day, when we got back home after work, my tenyearold daughter Becky, and Joe were united in their desire for a dog.As for me, I shared none of theirs.
“But why,” they pleaded(恳求).“Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.” “But we’ll do it.” “Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” “Yes, yes, and yes.” “I don’t believe you.” “We will.We promise.”
They didn’t. They wanted to walk the cute dog that first day. From day two, neither of them thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one.As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated,“The medium one is the most reliable.”
Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld(心灵相通).She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, send her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand—which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she would extend across my stomach as I watched television, and snored on my homeoffice couch as I worked on my design.
Even so, part of me continued to reject walking duty. Joe and Becky had promised.“Not fair,” I said to myself as she and I walked.“Not fair,” I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home.
In September, 2008, the Great Depression hit Arizona. With that, my husband and I were both laid off overnight.During the following six months, Joe and I hurriedly rushed here and there to seek a new job, doing anything and everything we could to request employment.Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained. However, Misty still needed walking.

Upset as I was, I had to walk Misty while seeking a job. I felt it a heavy duty to apply my energy to the routine walk.Every time I walked Misty, I felt exhausted and fed up.One day, Misty stopped in front of me, unwilling to move forward despite my dragging the rope.Dramatically, all my anxiety, exhaustion and displeasure erupted like a volcano.I knelt down, burying my head in my hands, tears rolling down my face. Then, Misty approached me and laid her head on my knees to comfort me. I was a little embarrassed but grateful for Misty’s understanding. Then I stood up, with my steps firm and powerful.
Paragraph 2:
Months going by, my life changed a little and I came to enjoy my walks with Misty. It felt more like relaxation than duty. Misty shared my negative feelings and kept walking peacefully, which comforted me a lot. Thanks to Misty’s silent companion, I regained the enthusiasm to life and finally went through the hard times. With my unremitting efforts, I eventually got a new job, and so did Joe. Everything seemed to be just fine and my family went back to routine. But something did change—I had an earnest and faithful friend.

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old. He was at home with his elder sister Jane. Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.
“Quick!Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone yelled.
Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.
Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor(走廊) through the smoke.
They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed suit.
Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik, Malay for auntie. Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas(睡衣裤)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.
“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. “I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily
routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded the door. “Go downstairs. Go now! Go!”

Paragraph 1:
Tom noticed the flame was reaching up. Frozen with fear, he stood rooted to the spot. He comprehended the gravity of the situation and held Jane’s hand tightly. By then, both of them were coughing and their eyes were stinging. Time seemed to stand still, though they were probably there for only two or three minutes. Tom begged Jane to run for safety as quickly as possible. Jane tried to shield her nose from the choking smoke and shook her head. She kept pounding against the door. Tom burst out crying.
Paragraph 2:
Luckily, some neighbors passing by stopped and offered help. A sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Jane’s mind. She told them Ms. Makcik must be still in the room. They forced the door open with all their might. Sure enough, Makcik was lying in bed, unconscious. She was carried downstairs and then rushed to the hospital, where she finally came to herself. People in the neighborhood felt relieved and Jane and Tom’s joy was immense.

When I was ten years old, I lived with my family in a small house in rural South Jersey. I often accompanied my mother to the A&P to buy groceries. Without a car, we walked, and I would help her carry the bags.
My mother had to shop very carefully, as she was a waitress, and her salary barely sustained(勉强维持) us. One day, while she was weighing prices, a promotional display for the World Book Encyclopedia(百科全书) caught my eyes. The volumes were beautifully creamcolored. Volume Ⅰ was ninetynine cents with a tendollar purchase.
All I could think of while shopping was the book. I stood at the register(收银台) with my mother, holding my breath as the cashier rang up the items. It came to over eleven dollars. My mother produced a five, some singles, and a handful of change. As she was counting out the money, I somehow found the courage to ask for the encyclopedia. “Could we get one?” I said, showing her the display. “It’s only ninetynine cents.”
I did not understand my mother’s increasing anxiety; she did not have enough change and had to sacrifice a large can of peas to pay the amount, “Not now, Patricia,” she said sternly. “Today is not a good day.” I packed the groceries and followed her home, upset.
The next Saturday, my mother gave me a dollar and sent me to the A&P alone. Two quarts of milk and a loaf of bread — that’s what a dollar in 1957. I went straight to the World Book display. There was only one first volume left, which I placed in my cart(购物车). I didn’t need a cart, but took one so I could read as I went up and down the aisles. A lot of time went by and I knew I had to leave, but I couldn’t bear to part with the book. With no detective in sight, I, impulsively(冲动地), put it inside my shirt and zipped up my jacket. I was a tall, skinny kid, and I am certain the shape of the book was obvious.

My heart beating rapidly, I headed for the register. I paid the dollar for the three items and was about to leave when I felt a heavy tap on my shoulder. It was a big detective. “You stole something. You will be searched,” he announced. Horrified, I slid the book out from inside the shirt and handed it over. “An encyclopedia?” he asked, somewhat surprised. “Yes,” I whispered, trembling. “Why didn’t you ask your parents to purchase it?” “I did, but they didn’t have the money.” With a sigh, he made me promise to tell my parents about my wrongdoing and then let me leave.
Paragraph 2:
Back home, I told my mother what I had promised the detective. Unexpectedly, she didn’t explode as usual. She fell silent, looking extremely anxious. Consumed with guilt, I gathered my courage, apologized and promised that it would never ever happen again. “All will be OK!” said my mother, wrapping me in her arms. Then she told me that she would go to the A&P to tell the detective I had admitted and that I should play outside. Hours later, when I was back home, I noticed a bag with my name on it. I opened it and packed inside was the World Book Encyclopedia, Volume Ⅰ.

Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were wellbehaved, all of them standing in line, twobytwo behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and
other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives.
The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight in shining armor.” He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded “please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, lowered her head and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady again told him the price. The man obviously didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus? Actually we were not wealthy in any sense, so I understood how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow.Bobby didn’t wear boots; or rather, he didn’t own any.The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already.Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother’s Christmas gift.He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless.Even if I do come up with an idea, I don’t have any money for a gift.”
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were.It wasn’t easy being six without a father, particularly when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window.Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer(微光) of the setting sun’s rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime(一角硬币).
Never before had anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newlyfound treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when the salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother’s Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his one dime offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby’s shoulder, saying,“You just wait here and I’ll see what I can do for you.” As
Bobby waited, he looked at the beautiful flowers and even though he was a boy, he could see why mothers and girls loved flowers.

Once upon a time, two brothers who lived on neighbouring farms fell into conflict. It was the first serious disagreement in forty years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labour and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long cooperation fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and then grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.
One morning, there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter’s toolbox. “I’m looking for a few days’ work,” he said. “Perhaps you have a few jobs here and there. Could I help you?” “Yes,” said John. “I do have a job for you. Look across the small creek at that farm. That’s my neighbor. In fact, it’s my younger brother. Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer(推土机) there and now there is a creek between us. Well, he may have done this to annoy me but I’ll do better. See that pile of wood by the barn(谷仓)? I want you to build a fence — an 8foothigh fence —so I won’t need to see his place anymore.”
The carpenter said, “I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and holedigger and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.” John had to go to the town for supplies, so he helped the carpenter get everything ready and then he left.
The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing and nailing. At sunset when John returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. John’s eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped.

The two brothers met in the middle, taking each other’s hand and hugging each other.
Paragraph 2:
They turned to see the carpenter lift the toolbox onto his shoulder. “No, wait! Stay a few more days. We have more jobs for you,” said John. “I’d love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but I have many more bridges to build.” Observing the carpenter leaving, the two brothers waved grateful goodbye to him. What a thoughtprovoking story! Every day we have the choice of building a fence or a bridge. One leads to separation and anger while the other leads to openness and friendship.

It was Christmas Day. Robin was working alone fixing an old lantern in the backroom when he heard the ringing of his bell on the shop door. The bell, which produced a uniquely pleasant sound, had been in Robin’s family for over a hundred years. He valued it dearly and enjoyed sharing its song with all who came to his shop. Although the bell hung on the inside of the main door,Robin had tied a wire to the screen door so that it would ring whether the inner door was open or not. Hearing the bell,he left the backroom to greet his customer.
“And how can I help you, little lady?”Robin’s voice was joyful.
“Hello, sir.”The little girl spoke almost in a whisper. She looked at Robin with her big brown eyes, and then slowly scanned the room in search of something special. Shyly she told him,“I’d like to buy a present, sir.”
“Well,let’s see,”Robin said,“who is this present for?”
“My grandpa. It’s for my grandpa. But I don’t know what to get.”
Robin began to make suggestions.“How about a pocket watch? It’s in good condition.”The little girl didn’t answer. She had walked to the doorway and put her small hand on the door. She shook the door gently to ring the bell. Robin’s face seemed to glow as he saw her smiling with
excitement.
“This is just right,”the little girl said.“Momma says grandpa loves music.”
Just then,Robin’s expression changed. Fearful of breaking the little girl’s heart,he told her,“I’m sorry,Missy. That’s not for sale. Maybe your grandpa would like this little radio.”
The girl looked at the radio, bowed her head, and sadly sighed,“No,I don’t think so.”
In an effort to help her understand,Robin told her that the bell had been his only companion, for the rest of his family were all gone now, except for his estranged (疏远的) daughter whom he had not seen for nearly a decade.

A merchant sent his son to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest of men.The young man wandered through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the wise man that the young man was looking for.
However, instead of finding a holy man, our hero entered a room and saw a great deal of activity: merchants coming and going, people chatting in the corners, a band playing sweet music, and there was a table with different kinds of delicious food on it.The wise man talked to everybody, and the young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for his audience.
The wise man listened attentively to the reason for the boy’s visit, but told him that at that moment he did not have the time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He offered his suggestion that the young man take a walk around his castle and come back in two hours’ time.
“However, I want to ask you a favor,”he added, handing the boy a teaspoon, in which he poured two drops of oil.“While you walk, carry this spoon and don’t let the oil spill(溢出).”
The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. At the end of the two hours he returned to the presence of the wise man.
“So,”asked the wise man,“did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows of my dining room? Did you see the garden that the master of gardeners took ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?”
Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the drops of oil the wise man had given him.

“But where are the two drops of oil I give you?” asked the wise man.Embarrassed again, the young man couldn’t say a word. However, the wise man smiled and comforted him,“this is just the secret of happiness.Nowadays, most of us pay much attention to our work but have less time to relax.People often complain about life but they seldom relax to find happiness.Happiness is just around us.”On hearing that, the young man went back with satisfaction.Since then, he could always find happiness in life.
