We wanted to study how students at our school spend money. In order to study this, we made some questions to ask our classmates. First, we asked our classmates how much money they spent in one month. Then we asked how much money they spent for things like drinks, music, books, movies, computer games, and other things. Our math teacher helped us make a graph of our classmates’ answers.
Then we thought it would be interesting to compare these answers with our classmates’ expenses from last year. It was a little hard for them to remember how much they spent on some things. We used their answers to make another graph for their expenses last year.
Looking at the two graphs, it’s easy to compare the expenses for the two years. Some of their expenses increased, but others decreased. This was a very interesting project for us.

PEOPLE ride bicycles all over the world. But there are many differences between bicycling in China and in other countries.
Wearing helmets
You may think that helmets (头盔) are hot and uncool. But in many places kids have to wear them when they ride their bikes. In much of the United States, it is against the law for kids under 16 to ride without a helmet. Other countries, such as Australia and Spain, have laws that say everyone must wear a helmet. Many people say that helmets are like seatbelts for bikes. Wearing one protects you in case of an accident.
Side of the road
In China, bicycles have their own special lanes on the road. People can ride next to cars without getting hurt. In the US, roads are only for cars. People don't ride their bikes to school or work. But this isn't true everywhere in the West. In the Netherlands (荷兰) there are more bikes than people. The whole country has bicycle lanes.
Riding for fun
Do you ride your bike to school? In China this is very common. But in the US, kids only ride their bikes for fun on the weekend. They think of bicycling as a sport. Many cities have special bicycle parks. People have turned old train tracks (车道) into bike roads. People can ride from town to town.

It’s hard to imagine what life was like in the days before electricity. There are many things that use electric power, both indoors and outdoors. When these things stop working we realize how much we need them. We use electric lights and lamps to help us see in the dark. When it’s hot, electric fans and air conditioners keep us cool indoors. If we feel cold, we can switch on an electric heater to warm us up.
Electric appliances (电器) in the kitchen make life much easier there. Fridges keep food fresh for a long period of time. Before they were invented, food had to be covered with salt or sealed(密封) in containers to stop if from going bad. People washed their dirty clothes by hand before they had washing machines. In the days
before electric kettles, you had to boil water in a pot over the fire to make a cup of tea.
Keeping the house clean also took longer in those days. Without a vacuum cleaner to suck up(吸收) the dirt, people swept their floors with a broom. And they had no electric tools to help them with outdoor work, such as sawing(锯) wood or mowing(割) grass.
Some small electric appliances, like torches and mobile phones, use batteries instead.

A. It keeps us cool. B. It keeps us warm.

A. A vacuum cleaner. B. A washing machine
C. An electric kettle. D. A torch.

A. How to use some electric appliances at home.
B. How to use some electric appliances outdoors.
C. Why do we need electric appliances.
D. The electric appliance we use inside and outside our home.
