Practice Makes Perfect (CET4 97.1)
3. 又如...
There is an old saying in China: practice makes perfect. Practice is means and perfect is goal. Only when you do more practice can you make things perfect. This is true not only in our learning but also in other walks of life.
When we study English, we have so much to learn such as grammar, vocabulary and so on. In order to learn them well, we need do more practice. We must read a lot, write a lot and listen to a lot. Only after we have done more practice can we have a good command of it.
Another case in point is typing. A good typist can type fast and accurately. But you will not be surprised at her performance if you know how much time she has spent practising. Through practice, she has improved both her typing speed and accuracy.
On the basis of the above discussion, it is not difficult for us to understand that practice makes perfect. Since all of us have realized the importance of practice, why not put it into practice?
Haste Makes Waste (CET6 97.1)
There is a popular saying, “ haste makes waste”, which suggests that the faster one tries to finish, the longer it seems to take him. Indeed, undue priority to speed will, more often than not, lead to undesirable consequences.
Life is filled with examples. A good case in point is in house building. In order to build more houses some construction units ignore quality, so there have emerged many poor quality buildings, which are as weak as bean curd, as criticized by Premier Zhu Rongji. Another good illustration is in English study. Some students, instead of hard work, concentrate on doing a lot of so-called simulated test exercises. They expect to get good grades on tests but the result is usually contrary to what they hope for.
In short, laying a solid foundation is essential if we want to make achievements in our studies or work, or indeed in any other aspect of our lives. At every step, to review what has been achieved and assess the problems ahead before moving to the next step is certainly a good approach.
Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus
(CET4 97.6)
With the rapid development of our society, the campus is no longer an “Ivory Tower” and social awareness has become increasingly necessary for college students. Students must get in touch with the world outside the campus so that they can adapt themselves to the society more quickly when they graduate.
There are several ways for the students to be exposed to the outside world. They may keep themselves informed by TV, radio broadcasts and newspapers. They may also directly go into the society by taking up part-time jobs such as distributors, home tutors etc. All these can help the students to know more about the society.
As one of the college students, I intend to make some social investigations in the coming summer vacation. Since I come from a small city in the north part of China, I would take the advantage of the vacation to visit several factories to learn about their conditions and also learn what kinds of graduates they need. After that I would adjust my study and try to learn more what the society needs.
My View on Job-Hopping (CET6 97.6)
When it comes to job-hopping, people’s attitudes vary from person to person. Some tend to think that job hopping is a reflection of incompetence and lack of loyalty. Unless they are forced to quit their job, they would stick to the same post for a considerable length of time and take great pride in their faithfulness. They are convinced that long service in an institution ensures everything, ranging from salary, benefits, promotion and training.
Others, however, think of job-hopping as commonplace and necessary. As the economy grows, more opportunities for employment are appearing. The result is that people, especially younger people, are tempted to change jobs frequently, seeking higher salaries or more interesting positions.
I think just as every coin has two sides, so does the matter of job-hopping. On the one hand it is a good thing for the workforce to be flexible, so that new demands for personnel can be satisfied quickly. On the other hand, if a person changes jobs too frequently, he or she will cause losses to the employing units. Moreover, frequent job-hopping prevents a person gaining valuable job experience and developing good work habits.
