Last year, I fell into a deep depression( 抑郁 ). It was caused by a car accident. I was in physical
recovery from the accident and suddenly all of my old hurts started coming up. I found myself crying
on the floor of my apartment.
I don't want you to bleed with me or to pity me. But I also don't want to gloss my reality. And the
truth is, beneath the shiny photos you see on the Internet, I'm still a work in progress. I'm not perfect.
Like all of us, I'm doing the best I can. Making the best choices I can. Back to the evening when I
found myself lying on the floor.
高考模拟卷(一)第 页 共 7 页2
What happened next? I started writing.
There was a TV show I absolutely loved. I started writing fan fiction. It provided a beautiful
place of escape from the thoughts swimming in my head. The depression started to lift. I started to
feel like myself again.
After completing a four-part fan fiction totaling around 12,000 words, I had an idea. I should
write a novel to give a hand to those like me.
I continued writing, having no idea where it would lead. I didn't know I would publish it but, after
much resistance on my part I finally made the decision to publish the book under my own name. No
pen name. No hiding on the deep bowels of the internet.
And so here we are. The day before the release of the book. Sure, readers will enjoy the twists
and turns. And I can see myself in the character. But that's not my real motivation. I wrote it to help
people. To give them a place to belong to. A place to talk about this fictional world. The very same
thing that saved me last year.
If the story provides this to just one person, I've done my job.

With a flock of birds, a group member can often be seen high in the tree acting as a lookout
while the rest feed on the ground below. When a predator approaches, the lookout sounds the
alarm.
To the casual observer, it may appear that the lookout is acting for the good of the greater
group, but a new study suggests that the lookout – called a sentinel( 哨兵 ) – may actually be
working for itself.
While sentinel behavior among groups of birds has been observed, Dr. Roni Ostreiher and
Professor Aviad Heifetz recently began researching the sentinel behavior of floaters –birds that
have either been cast out or for other reasons decide to go it alone. What they found was that
floaters also have similar lookout activities and will sound an alarm call if an enemy approaches.
This suggests that while the group benefits from having a lookout, the instinct to act as the lookout
is motivated not by the group but by self-preservation. The sentinel may simply be trying to scare
away its enemy instead of warning other birds down below.
It might be easy to understand that when a floater displays sentinel behavior, the bird is acting
for itself. However, birds in groups may have less selfish motives since the birds appear to alternate
as lookouts. “There are some adult group members who act as sentinels more often than others. As
far as we understand, acting as a sentinel is not a duty. Those who sentinel less often are not
punished, ” Ostreiher said.
高考模拟卷(一)第 页 共 7 页3
He also noted that the sentinel's primary purpose is to gather information about its
surroundings – the presence of a neighboring group, changes in food sources and even weather –
not keeping lookout for approaching enemies.
“We do not know what motivates them to stop eating and climb up to a tree branch and start to
sentinel, ” Ostreiher added. He and Heifetz are now focused on understanding what happens after
an alarm call is sounded.
28. What is the finding of the study?
A. Birds look out just for their own safety.
B. Sentinel behavior is unique to birds.
C. Birds have a strong sense of danger.
D. Birds react quickly when hearing an alarm.
29. What can we infer about a floater?
A. It is often a selfish bird.
B. It benefits from other birds.
C. It lives and feeds on its own.
D. Its duty is to protect other birds.
30. What is Ostreiher's opinion on birds' sentinel behavior?
A. It is unnecessary for a floater.
B. It is every bird's responsibility.
C. Birds seem to watch out in turn.
D. It is completely selfless behavior.
31. In which part of a newspaper can you find this passage?
A. Life. B. Health. C. Technology. D. Nature.

In New York, students at 18 schools participate in a program called We Future Cycle. Started
by Anna Giordano in 2014, it teaches kids to recycle, compost( 堆肥 ), and reduce food waste.
Lunch areas at the participating schools are equipped with three clearly marked bins –
compost, recycle and share. While the first two are common in schools, the third is rare, where kids
can put their unwanted drinks, fruits, and even untouched sandwiches. Items in the container are
available for any student that wants them. Whatever remains at the end of the day is donated to the
food bank. Giordano says the three bins have helped reduce the number of trash bags from an
average of 22 to just 2!
To ensure kids adopt similar habits at home, the non-profit has created extensive curriculum to
educate families about the importance of sorting waste into the proper streams of recycling,
composting, trash and food to donate They also urge parents to have open conversations with their
kids about food choices.
But, as we ’re all aware, kids aren ’t the only ones that waste food - Adults are equally bad, if not
worse! To prevent that, Josh Treuhaft founded Salvage Supper club in 2014. The occasionally
organized dinners promise people a tasty multi-course meal for a mere $50 USD per person. It is
also a plan to save waste because the delicious food is made from vegetables that are past their
prime and, therefore, headed for the trash bin.
The other catch? Customers have to eat their meals inside a dumpster (大型垃圾装卸车) ! The
place, of course, is totally clean. It is just a symbolic gesture. In addition to helping people rethink

their actions, Treuhaft also helps them do good by donating part of the profits to non-profits devoted
to fighting against food waste.
32. What is the aim of We Future Cycle?
A. To collect money and food for poor children.
B. To educate children to treasure and save food.
C. To encourage children to share food with others.
D. To inspire children to learn agriculture knowledge.
33. Which word can be used to describe We Future Cycle?
A. Successful. B. Official. C. Impractical. D. World-famous.
34. What do we know about Salvage Supper club?
A. It is mainly aimed for adults.
B. It is founded by Anna Giordano.
C. It provides free supper for people.
D. It has enjoyed great success in many schools.
35. What is the reason for people eating in a dumpster?
A. It is money- saving.
B. People like to be unique.
C. It can remind people of food waste problem.
