Ⅰ.单项填空
1.—Can those________at the back of the classroom hear me?

单元阅读理解题练
Ⅲ.阅读理解
A
Snow can be very beautiful. When snow covers everything around you,the
world looks like a “Winter Wonderland”.That is the name of a very popular song about winter.Richard Smith and Felix Bernard wrote the song in 1934.
But winter is not always such a beautiful and happy time.It is cold outside. The wind blows and makes it even colder. The days are shorter and darker. The sun rarely shines. The leaves on the trees are brown or have fallen to the ground. The flowers are mostly gone.It is not surprising that some people are sad in winter. And some people dream about being somewhere else where it is warm and pretty—like the state of California. The Mamas and the Papas recorded their famous song,“California Dreaming” in 1965.
During the 1960s,many other famous rock groups sang songs about winter. There was a song sung by Simon and Garfunkel called “A Hazy Shade of Winter”.They sang about life and hope.
In 1968,the group Blood,Sweat and Tears recorded this gentle, sad song about winter. They sang about the lost love and forgotten memories in “Sometimes in Winter”.
Gordon Lightfoot wrote and recorded another sad and lovely song about winter in 1975.Sarah McLachlan recorded “Song for a Winter’s Night” for an album in 2006.She sang about reading a love letter and wishing the writer were with her.

Bridgwater Carnival will be held on a Saturday, instead of Friday, as part of a three year trial from 2012.
It is hoped that the decision made by the carnival committee will protect its future and increase donations, which have been falling, to local charities. The revised dates are set for Saturday, 3 November 2012,
Saturday, 2 November 2013 and Saturday, 1 November 2014.Other carnivals in Somerset, like North Petherton, which are held on a Saturday, won’t be affected by the date change.
Bridgwater Carnival is the oldest and longest running carnival in Somerset and is part of the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnival Association circuit.Other carnivals are North Petherton, Burnham, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet, Wells and Weston.
It is not the first time that the carnival has changed dates — up until 2001 Bridgwater Carnival took place on a Thursday, but nine years ago organisers took the controversial decision to change the night from a Thursday to the Friday closest to Guy Fawkes night.
Dave Stokes, from Bridgwater Carnival, said, “We don’t want to conflict with other carnivals.Crowds at Bridgwater Carnival have remained pretty steady but the actual amount of money that we have been collecting has gone down, which is a concern and fundraising is getting more difficult. We’re hoping that by changing this to a Saturday for this trial period, we can change that situation.”

Parents often say, “I don’t understand why my child is acting this way. We’ve given him everything in the world, and he just wants more. He’s never happy. He doesn’t enjoy what he has.”
For some reason, we often feel that if we give our child everything he wants to keep him happy, he should behave the way we want him to.An important part of meeting children’s emotional(情感的)needs is to set limits often and firmly in a loving way.Parents who learn to set limits in a loving way set them more often because they don’t have to wait until they’ve “had it up to here” to do so.
A therapeutic (治疗的) way of setting limits is called ACT:acknowledge the feeling, communicate the limit, and target the choice.Necessarily, you’re saying to the child, “I understand how you feel. It’s OK to feel that way, but you can’t act that way when you feel like that. You can act this way when you feel like that.” It’s also important to communicate this message in a loving way, not an angry way.
Using ACT limit-setting teaches children to cope with their emotions and to find appropriate behavioural expressions that don’t hurt the children themselves. It can also be used to teach children to delay gratification(满意).Here are some examples of how it works. If your child wants a toy when you’re at the store and you don’t want to buy it, you can say, (A) “You love that toy and want it right now, (C)but we won’t spend any money on toys today.(T)You can put it on your wish list for birthday or Christmas.”
Using this technique, you’ll learn to set reasonable limits that work.If you set limits too severely, you’re also more likely to give in, because you feel guilty. If you don’t follow through with a consequence or you make one that’s too severe, you teach your child not to trust you.

Geese were flying through the sky, breaking the afternoon silence.Their cries seemed different that day:Did something strange happen?
The answer was yes.A whale had been washed up on the shore, only seven days after another had landed farther down.We decided to go see it.
A dozen or more people had also come to see it,though only a few approached it.Many will avoid such things. They are unpleasant. To see it lie in the sand naturally inspires a degree of fear, followed by woe.
I managed to get up close on the south side of the whale. Its skin was smooth and hard.If you were to kick it,your feet could break.
In my long life I think I’ve seen only one whale in its natural environment from the deck (甲板) of a ship. Now,I’ve seen two whales washed up on a beach:the first in August 2006.It was the biggest creature I had ever seen until that time:at a length of 55 feet.I pushed at its outer skin because I wanted to feel the realness of it.Its influence upon my mind and heart sped through me like a rush.
The strength of my feeling toward the one at hand was similar, though not so strong. No matter how surprising an experience like that can be,repetition reduces its effect;so we start not to care about the fate of these animals. We have to accept their final disappearance from the Earth sadly.Suzanne Thurman, chief of Delaware’s Marine Education Research and Rehabilitation Institute, required ships to move at slower speeds in certain waters, and during the whales’ breeding time.“The major threat to whales,”she said,“is the cruise ships. They travel at very high speeds;whales don’t have the time to get out of their way.”
After about a half hour with the whale,we left.I was only slightly disturbed by the scene, but strongly hoping never to see another such sight as long as I live. But if it comes again,I will be out there. Why?To bear witness.

Teachers using red pens to mark students’ work could be harming their psyche (心智) as the colour is too aggressive, according to education strategies drafted by an Australian state government.
The “Good Mental Health Rocks” kit, which was distributed this month to about 30 schools in Queensland state, offers strategies such as “Don’t mark in red pens(which can be seen as aggressive)—use a different colour.” Other tips include structuring time for peer tutoring every day, apologizing to students when necessary and asking students to conduct a “personal skill audit (审查)” where they focus on their individual strengths rather than their weaknesses.
The kit, designed to help Queensland teachers address mental health problems in the classroom, suggests social and emotional well-being has been linked to young people’s schooling, among other things. The education aid has sparked a row in parliament(议会), with deputy opposition leader Mark McArdle calling it “kooky, loony, loopy lefty policies”.
But Health Minister Stephen Robertson, whose department devised the kit, said youth suicide was a serious issue. “If mental health professionals determine that as one of a number of strategies teachers should consider, and then I’ll support them every day, ” he told reporters recently. “This is not a matter for ridicule;this is serious.”
According to some Australian mental health groups, the greatest number of people with mental illness is aged between 18 and 24 years, with 14 percent of Australian children and adolescents suffering from some sort of illness.Boys are slightly more likely to experience mental health problems than girls and depression is one of the most common conditions among young people and increases during adolescence, the website of mental health group Mindframe said.
68.The “Good Mental Health Rocks” kit was designed for the purpose of .

C.taking care of the students’ mental health in the classroom
D.improving the teachers’ teaching strategies in the classroom

71 :less red meat and more fibre, less saturated fat (饱和脂肪)and more fruit and vegetables, right?Wrong, according to a controversial new book by nutritionist Zoe Harcombe. In the book, Harcombe charts her careful journey of research into studies that underpin (巩固)dietary advice—and her myth(误区)-breaking conclusions are surprising.
Myth: 72 .
“Real fat is not bad for us, ” says Harcombe. “It’s man-made fat we should be demonising.” Why do we have this idea that meat is full of saturated fat?In a 100g pork chop, there is 2.3g of unsaturated fat and 1.5g of saturated fat.
Myth:We should eat more fibre.
For three decades, we have eaten fibre into our bodies to help us feel full and keep our digestive systems moving. “ 73 ,” says Harcombe.
The advice to eat more fibre is put forward along with the theory that we need to clean our digestive systems. But essential minerals are absorbed from food while it is in the intestines (肠道), so why do we want to wash everything out?Concentrate on not putting bad foods in.
Myth:You need to eat five portions of fruit and veg a day. “‘Five-a-day’ is the most well-known piece of nutritional advice, ” says Harcombe. “You’d think it was based on firm evidence of health benefit. 74 .‘Five-a-day’ started as a marketing campaign by 25 fruit-and-veg companies and the American National Cancer Institute in 1991.There was no evidence for any cancer benefit.”
Myth:Fruit and veg are the most nutritious things to eat.
Apparently not.Harcombe allows that vegetables are a great addition to the diet — if served in butter to deliver the fat-soluble (dissolved) vitamins they contain— but natural sugar, the fruit sugar in fruit, goes straight to the liver and is stored as fat.
“ 75 , ” says Harcombe, who adds: “Vitamins and minerals in animal foods—meat, fish, eggs and dairy products—beat those in fruit hands down.”
A.Want to lose weight?Don’t trust these.
B.We think we know what to eat
C.This is not a good idea

F.We need take more exercise
G.Fruit is best avoided by those trying to lose weight

50.D 那些病人由于没有机会上学而不会写自己的名字, 作者由此 “意识到 (realized) ” 学习能改变一个人的命运。

52.C 下文的that education could change everyone’s life是作者从事教育事业所持的 “信念 (belief) ”。
53.B 从下文的that helped me learn the art of teaching可知, 作者得到了别人的帮助, 因此肯定是 “感激的 (grateful) ”。

A great fire broke out in Li Ming’s home at about 10:00 last night.Luckily, no man got hurt, though all the things in his house were burnt down.
It was said the fire was caused by a cigarette butt thrown by someone carelessly. As it hadn’t rained for a long time and the firewood was piled everywhere, it was very easy to catch fire.On the other hand, people had already gone to bed by then. When they got dressed and came out to put out the fire, the fire had become very difficult to control.
Because of our carelessness, there can be a great disaster. From this event, we can see that we should be careful with fire in the future.
