Uncivilized behavior by passengers unacceptable
For the first time, airline passengers have been blacklisted for uncivilized behavior. Their names will remain on the blacklist for one or two years, according to an announcement by the China Air Transport Association on Saturday. The blacklisting means they will not be able to travel by air until their names are removed from the list.
Blacklisting passengers who disobey the rules for travelling by air and so place their own interests before everything else,
- 22 - / 22
including safety, has long been overdue (迟到的,延迟的).
There have been frequent reports of passengers making a scene when their flight was delayed or when they believed that they were not treated as they should be on a flight.
Yet it is natural for some flights to be delayed because of reasons such as bad weather or mechanical problems that need to be solved. However, some passengers seem to take it for granted that their flight must take off at the time stated on their ticket, and they even suppose that the members of the cabin crew are simply there to do their bidding(吩咐).
They forget that they should behave themselves in the first place and that respect is reciprocal (互相给与的).There is no reason for them to be respected when they do not show enough respect for others.
Observing rules can never be over-emphasized when it comes to flight safety. No one has the right to ignore the rules for any reason. Of course, airlines should provide quality services to meet the needs of passengers. Yet, even if passengers are not satisfied with the service provided, there is still no reason for them to flout the rules that are designed for the safety of all.
The blacklisting of these three passengers should serve for others to know they have to toe the line (顺从集体).
21. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Never before have airline passengers been blacklisted.
- 22 - / 22
B. At no time should flights be delayed, whatever the reasons.
C. Members of the cabin crew should be at the passengers’ service at any moment.
D. If an airline passenger is blacklisted, he or she will never be allowed to travel by air.
22. The underlined word “observing” in paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. cancelling B. breaking C. setting D. obeying
23. The text is most probably taken from ________.
A. a research paper B. a newspaper report C. an advertisement D. a flight guide
B
I was in the middle of a sweet dream when a noise startled me. Bam! Bam! It sounded like a hammer pounding on a tough nail. Bam! Bam! BAM! Who could be hammering at three in the morning? It must be Charlie again, making another invention.
Just as I was putting on my slippers and clothes, the noise changed. I sat at the edge of my bed and listened. Tick! Tick! Tick! It reminded me of my first wristwatch. Its regular pace had always helped me fall asleep.
I started dozing off, dangerously leaning to the left, when the ticking stopped. It was now replaced by a buzz, similar to
- 22 - / 22
the noise coming from a beehive in midsummer, only louder. I shivered. I’m allergic to bees! Even just thinking about it or hearing a bee-like sound makes me swell. “That’s it!” I shouted, now wide awake, “I can’t take it any more!” I marched to the next apartment and knocked. My neighbor immediately opened the door. His curly brown hair was sticking up every which way. He wore baggy striped pants and a loose raspberry shirt.
“Hi, there, Lucy! What’s up ?” he asked.
I pointed at my noiseless watch. “Do you know what time it is?”
He grabbed my arm and glanced at my timepiece. “Oh, my! I didn’t realize it was that late. I’m busy working on a machine that can cure insomnia(失眠). It’s almost finished. You want to see it?”
I should have known. His last invention was supposed to annihilate bad smells, but it was powered by rotten eggs.
24. What made the author sleepy again?
A. The ticking sound. B. The coming of the bees.
C. The smell of the rotten eggs. D. His neighbor’s silence.
- 22 - / 22

At a recent visit to the flower gardens in Holland, I learned about the practice of topping. As flowers grow, sometimes the growers cut off the tops of them, which is helpful to produce higher quality flowers. It is true that sometimes when we produce some results in a certain area, it can be good to cut them off and throw them away, which helps free up energy for a new attempt elsewhere.
After running my company of computer games for 10 years and having pleasing results, I decided to leave that field
- 22 - / 22
behind. This freed up my energy to focus on improving myself in my writing and speaking. If I'd kept running the old business, I would have had less energy to invest in my new path and had weaker results.
When you feel that life is becoming too stagnant (停滞不前的 ) , try mixing things up now and then. As a way to do so, I've been travelling continuously. Since April 23, I have been in Europe for a month. During this time, I've dropped my old daily routine that I would normally use at home and I’m trying something different. This means that more energy is freed up for exploration and growth.
The longer you stay still, the more people based on your current position will relate to you. Your thoughts and feelings may become repetitive and circular. Your surrounding environment may control your daily routine. Soon you notice that as the years pass, there is little change in your life. This is the comfort zone.
Stepping outside of your comfort zone is an uncomfortable experience, but it is worthwhile. During my Europe trip, for instance, each day brings new challenges, like making the mistake of taking the stairs from the bottom of Covent Garden Underground Tube Station. But with so much to explore and learn, I feel
- 22 - / 22
that minor victories of the sort that I seldom experienced at home are waiting for me every day. Dropping personal satisfaction to go for more growth is not an easy path to follow, but I do find it to be the more beautiful path.
28.After paying a visit to the flower gardens, the author came to realize .
A. it is practical for one to take up the skill of topping the flowers
B. one is supposed to have a high expectation for one's coming future
C. one should ignore the current achievement and try something new
D. it is enjoyable for one to get close to nature and admire the flowers
29.What's the purpose of the author's dropping his former business?
A. To keep up with the changes of modern society.
B. To free himself from the busy work and heavy debts.
C. To satisfy his great desire for personal development.
D. To seek ways to increase the profits and productivity.
- 22 - / 22
30.We can infer from the passage that those who live in the comfort zone are likely to ?
a. be lack of creativity in thoughts
b. feel less confident
c. have a changing lifestyle
d. be frightened of competition
e. be controlled by the physical environment
f. be attracted to old customs and habits
A. a, e B. c, e C. a, b, e D. c, e, f
31.What does the passage mainly discuss about?
A. Getting out of home to grow or maintaining a comfortable life.
B. Having a strong desire to live in the past or in the future.
C. Holding a positive attitude towards your career and life.
D. Trying to slow down and enjoy your life to the fullest.
D
Louis Pasteur was a world-famous French chemist and biologist.
He is particularly famous for his work on rabies vaccine
- 22 - / 22
(狂犬病疫苗). The rabies virus enters the body through the bite of an infected animal or through infected saliva (唾液) entering an existing wound. After experimenting with the saliva of animals suffering from the disease, Pasteur concluded that the disease rests in the central nervous system of the body. By studying the tissues of infected animals — rabbits, Pasteur was able to produce a form of the virus. This could be used for inoculation (接种).
On July 6, 1885, Pasteur tested his pioneering rabies vaccine on a man for the first time. He saved the life of a young man called Joseph Meister who had been bitten by a rabid dog. Pasteur was urged to treat him with his new method. The treatment lasted 10 days and at the end he recovered and remained healthy. Since then thousands have been saved by this treatment.
On March 1886, Pasteur was invited to present his results to the Academy of Sciences and in 1888 went on to found the Pasteur Institute in Paris. This was a pioneering clinic for the study of infectious diseases, the treatment of rabies and a centre for teaching. Pasteur directed the institute personally until he died. The Pasteur Institute is still one of the most important centers in the world.
Pasteur became a national hero and was honored in many ways.
- 22 - / 22
He died at Saint-Cloud on September 28, 1895 and was given a state funeral at the Cathedral of Notre Dame.
Modifications (修改) of the Pasteur method are still used in rabies treatment today. A newer vaccine which contains virus prepared from human cells grown in the laboratory is safer and requires a shorter course of injections.

C. Injections of vaccine still take much time.

How to Retain More of Every Book You Read
In recent years, I have focused on building good reading habits and learned how to read more. For most people, the final goal of reading a nonfiction book is to actually improve their life by learning a new skill, understanding an important problem, or looking at the world in a new way. 36 With that in
- 22 - / 22
mind. I'd like to share three reading comprehension skills that I use to make my reading more productive.
1. Make all of your notes searchable.
Having searchable book notes is important for returning to ideas easily. 37 An idea is only useful if you can find it when you need it. There is no need to leave the task of reading comprehension merely up to your memory.
2. 38
When you go to the library, all of the books will be divided into different categories. In the real world, of course, knowledge is not separated into neatly defined boxes. 39 For that reason, I try to consider how the book I’m reading is connected with all of the ideas that are already inside my head. Whenever possible, I try to combine the lessons I’m learning with previous ideas.
3. Summarize the book in one paragraph.
40 It forces me to review my notes and consider what is really important about the book. In many cases, I find that I can usually get just as much useful information from reading my one-paragraph summary and reviewing my notes as I would if I read the entire book again.
A. Combine thoughts as you
- 22 - / 22
read.
B. All knowledge is interconnected.
C. Describe the book to your friends.
D. Read widely if you want to practice the skills.
E. It increases the chances that you will apply what you read in real life.
F. Once I finish a book, I challenge myself to conclude the text in just three sentences.
G. It's important to read books, but it is just as important to remember what you read and use it.
