B My brother and I were like most people, I imagine, who find themselves trying to do the right things for a parent suffering from the symptoms of dementia (痴呆). Though there was useful advice available from various online sources, nothing prepared us for the reality or the effects the symptoms had upon Mum's loving, kind, caring nature. The greatest shock for me was seeing Mum being violent and aggressive with a carer. At times the aggression was directed at me too and I never really knew what to expect as Mum could go from being a loving Mother to this violent stranger in a flash. It was as though Mum had been possessed at times and all I could do was to constantly attempt to distract her from her fears at any moment. One of the many challenging aspects of the dementia symptoms is that the sufferer often doesn't know that they're ill. In Mum's case, the main thing was to carry on as though everything was just as it always was. Many were the nights where she'd be convinced that friends and relatives were coming round for a party and she'd rush around setting the table, preparing snacks and getting everything ready until she was exhausted. I got to see first hand just how the anxieties that came with the illness would really stay with her until she fell asleep. Mum longed for reminders of her early life in Liverpool and once travelling there had become too difficult, we found great comfort in local history books and a DVD about many of the places and landmarks Mum remembered from her childhood. I learned to go with whatever experience Mum was having. I would always be with her. If I could pass on any guidance for those about to care for a loved one, it is the above I found that really helps. 24. How was the writer when her mother suffered dementia? A. She started to care about her mother's health. B. She was not prepared mentally at all. C. She knew nothing about the disease. D. She doubted the effect of medical care. 25. What shocked the writer most according to Para 2? A. Her mother's longing for her childhood photos. B. The sudden distinct shift in her mother's temper. C. Her mother's sufferings from fear and anxiety. D. Her mother's failing to deal with daily chores. 26. Why does the author tell th e story of Mum's preparing for a party? A. To prove her mum is not aware of her illness at all. B. To explain how to help her mum come over her anxiety. C. To regret that she failed to help her mum with her problem. D. To look for a better medical treatment for her mum. 27. What may the author suggest to those who have a parent with dementia? A. Hard work pays off. B. Where there is a will, there is a way. C. Company is the best medicine. D. Look before you leap. C China's Mars rover, Tianwen-1, will likely attempt to land at a site in northeastern Mars, according to a new paper published just days ahead of the mission's launch. The paper was written by team members of China's Tianwen-1 Mars mission, which aims to send an orbiter and a rover to the Red Planet. The study reveals new details about Tianwen-1, outlining its intended landing area, science goals and the names of instruments aboard the spacecraft. It also stresses the historic nature of the mission:Not only is Tianwen-1 China's first fully homegrown Mars mission, it's also the first to carry both an orbiter and a rover. Tianwen-1 means "questions to heaven“ and was taken from the title of a poem by Qu Yuan (340 — 278 BC). The spacecraft will reach Mars in February 2021, at the same time as NASA's Perseverance rover and the United Arab Emirates5 Hope orbiter launched on Sunday (July 19). However, China's rover will remain attached to the orbiter for two to three months before attempting its landing, according to the paper. The chosen landing area is Utopia Planitia, a huge basin formed by a large impact far back in Mars' history that was also the region where NASA's Viking 2 lander touched down in 1976. China had isolated a part of the vast plain as a landing area, which means there will be more time and atmosphere for the entry spacecraft to slow down and safely land on the surface. The latitude is also suitable for receiving enough sunlight to power the 240 kilograms rover. The relatively smooth surface will also be helpful for roving. The mission also benefits from the engineering heritage of China's Chang'e lunar exploration program, the paper noted. The Tianwen-1 orbiter will operate in a polar orbit in order to map Mars. The rover will also investigate the surface soil characteristics and water-ice distribution with its own Subsurface Exploration Radar. It will also analyze surface material composition and characteristics of the Martian climate and environment on the surface. 28. What's the purpose of the passage? A. To lay out key details about Tianwen-1. B. To state how Tianwen-1 was invented. C. To stress the historic meaning of Tianwen-1. D. To analyze characteristics of the Martian climate. 29. What is most special about Tianwen-1 according to Paras 2 & 3? A. It was named after Qu Yuan, a famous poet in Chinese history. B. It will reach Mars at the same time as NASA's Viking 2. C. It will remain for 2 or 3 months on Mars. D. It will complete orbiting and roving in a Mars mission. 30. Why is Utopia Planitia chosen as the landing area of Tianwen-17 A. The rare air there is suitable for the flight of Tianwen. B. The area can protect Tianwen-1 from too much sunlight. C. It has relatively smooth surface, which is helpful for roving. D. There is no spacecraft successfully landing there in history. 31. The last paragraph states mainly. A. Tianwen-1's historic contributions B. Tianwen-1's new radar instruments C. Tianwen-1's academic advantages D. Tianwen-1's scientific goals D A 1930s-ancient restaurant in my town has done little to update itself over the past 80 years. This is part of its charm, as is the wooden phone booth(亭)sitting neglected in the age of the cellphone. And we need it now more than ever. For me it symbolizes that phone calls were once private affairs, even if the information being shared was not sensitive. In public places this meant resorting to the phone booth—a private space where one could converse in peace without being overheard. When I grew up in the 1960s, phone calls used to be regarded as something private, even at home. However, within the space of very few years, private conversations have become public broadcasts, and being overheard seems to be the point. The problem, of course, is that we now carry our phones with us and answer the device as soon as it rings, but at the price of our privacy being disclosed! Not long ago I was sitting in Boston's South Station, waiting for my train while a man was on his cellphone. I silently recited every detail of his phone conversation including his card number and its password. I stared at the fellow. He glanced at me, asking, "What?” My immediate response: Reciting all I had overheard to him, which left him opening his eyes wide. There is no more privacy, no longer a sense of personal borders or limits. The cellphone has become a megaphone, making our privacy known so easily to others. To return to phone booths: Why did they disappear? They used to be everywhere in my childhood and can readily serve as cellphone shelters today. A Mr. Riley had one in his small, struggling candy store where I grew up. Even at the age of 9, before I had acquired any life experiences, I would have labeled “private”, I would sometimes separate myself from my friends, close its door, and call home in peace and quiet. Should you think a phone booth has no value today, I saw one on eBay going for $ 4,750. And Mr. Riley would have flipped. 32. How does the author support the theme of the passage? A. By listing various reasons. B. By comparing differences. C. By sharing his own experiences. D. By proving study results. 33. What is the underlined word “megaphone“ in Para 5? A. A loudspeaker. B. A headset. C. A game player. D. A calculator. 34. What does the author really indicate when referring to the old phone booth? A. The place the old phone booth holds. B. The money value of the old-fashioned booth. C. The good interpersonal relationships. D. The privacy boundaries people should keep. 35. What can be the best title of the passage? A. The Return of the Old Phone Booth B. Does the Privacy Matter Now? C. My Story of Old Phone Booths D. Old Phone Booths, Still Valuable? 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2. 5 分,满分 12. 5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 The drop in garment prices over the last 20 years has allowed us to buy more and more clothes. We now have 5 times more clothes than our grandparents had. 36 It has become a challenge to wear a garment more than five times. Garment quality is declining every year. As a result? our clothes immediately look faded or shapeless not long before purchasing them. 37 We continue to purchase just to stay up to date. Fast fashion has become a monster in our closets. What's more, chemicals used in every part of the textile production are greatly harmful. Even clothes made of “100% natural fiber still contain a lot of chemicals. 38 The fashion industry is also the second largest polluter in the world just after the oil industry. In most countries where garments are produced? waste waters from textiles factories are dumped directly into the rivers. Some of them even reach the sea and eventually spreads around the globe. Clothing has clearly become disposable. 39 A family in the western world throws away an average of 30 kg of clothing each year. Only 15% is recycled or donated, and the rest goes directly to the landfill or is burned. It is also fueling our environmental concern. How can we avoid the environmental impact from the fashion industry? 40 A root of the problem lies in our excessive consumerism. Buy better quality. They often last long and good for the environment. Donate your second-hand garments to charity instead of throwing them in dustbins. Whatever your option, you are doing your part in saving our planet. A. We don't have many greener options in the fashion industry. B. As a result, we generate more and more textile waste. C. They can present a real danger to our health. D. Trends are changing so quickly that we cannot keep up. E. Think twice before throwing away your second-hand garments. F. To achieve the goal? we should first reflect on our lifestyle and buy less. G. This, in turn, has serious consequences on our consuming habits, our health and our planet. 第三部分 英语知识运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 I was deep in the Bolivian jungle, with a top predator wrapped around my body, hot breath on my face. It was small, with only a single pocket for cash, cards and coins. A zipper kept everything inside from falling out and a beautiful elephant was woven into its front panel. The wallet came to me all the way from Tanzania, gifted to me by a close friend. I fell in love with it immediately, it was the perfect size and came from a place I hoped to someday visit. I carried it everywhere; it was always precariously(不安全地) hanging out of one pocket or another. But the wallet was not only beautiful; it had a personality: it loved to run away? as I told my parents over and over again, only to receive eye rolls in return. "Frances, really? you've lost it again?” they would say every time I misplaced it. I seem to have a habit of losing things—jackets, water bottles, text books, even shoes. And every time I would report another loss, my parents would have a harder time believing it. "I swear,“ I would assure them, “it just ran away from me. " Unfortunately? they never believed that, and so often I was left to search and pray for the items to come back to me. One day? I was on my way home from school with a couple of friends.
