waste of energy and a major polluter of the environment. As a result,
they are turning to clotheslines as part of the "what-I -can do
environmentalism(环境保护主义 )."
On the other side are people who are against drying clothes
outside, arguing that clotheslines are unpleasant to look at. They have
persuaded Homeowners Associations (HOAs) access the U.S. to ban
outdoor clotheslines, because clothesline drying also tends to lower
home value in the neighborhood. This had led to a Right-to-Dry
Movement that is calling for laws to be passed to protect people's right
to use clotheslines.
So far, only three states have laws to protect clothesline.
Right-to-Dry supporters argue that there should be move.
Matt Reck, 37, is the kind of eco-conscious(有生态意识的 ) person
who feeds his trees with bathwater and reuses water drops from his air

dissatisfied neighbor had telephoned them about him clothesline. The
Recks paid no attention to the warming and still dried their clothes on a
line in the yard. "Many people say they are environmentally friendly but
they don't take matters in their own hands," says Reck. The local HOA
has decided not to take any action, unless more neighbors come to
them.

North Carolina lawmakers are saying that banning clotheslines is
not the right thing to do. But HOAs and housing businesses believe that
clothesline drying reminds people of poor neighborhoods. They worry
that if buyers think their future neighbors can't even afford dryers,
housing prices will fall.
Environmentalists say such worries are not necessary, and in view
of global warming, that idea needs to change. As they say, "The
clothesline is beautiful". Hanging clothes outside should be encouraged.
We all have to do at least something to slow down the process of global
warming."
56. One of the reasons why supporters of clothes dryers are trying to
ham clothesline drying is that ____.
A. clothes dryers are more efficient B. clothesline drying reduces
home value
C. clothes dryers are energy-saving
D. clothesline drying is not allowed in most U.S. states

People believes that climbing can do good to health. Where can you
learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the
mountains to learn how to climb, you're wrong. Many Americans are
learning to climb in city gyms(体育馆 ). Here, people are learning on
climbing. The climbing wall goes straight up and small holding places for
hands and feet.
How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and

to you. The ropes hold you in place so that you don't fall. A beginner's
wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are
small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to.

The most difficult is your fear. It's normal for humans to be afraid of

They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon; on
foot, on mules(骡子) or by air. We chose the first. Up early; my husband
and I and our three children couldn't wait to get started. We decided to
walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail.
As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I
couldn't help noticing that the other tourists weren't like us. They had
heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed,
As the sun rose higher, Arizona's famous heat seemed to roast(烘烤 ) us.
There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back,
with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally
got back, our legs were like jelly.
The next day, after we'd had a long rest and a good breakfast, we
were ready for another view of the Canyon - by air. After our last walk,
this would be the easiest thing in the world.
We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled
around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot
tossed(翻转 ) the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the
ground. I shouted, "STOP, TAKE US BACK!" When we finally arrived back
on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove

Celebrity(名人) has become one of the most important
representatives of popular culture. Fans used to be crazy about a specific
film, but now the public tends to base its consumption(消费) on the
interest of celebrity attached to any given product. Besides, fashion
magazines have almost abandoned the practice of putting models on the
cover because they don't sell nearly as well as famous faces. As a result,
celebrities have realized their unbelievably powerful marker potential,
moving from advertising for others' products to developing their own
Celebrity clothing lines aren't a completely new phenomenon, but
in the past they were typically aimed at the ordinary consumers, and
limited to a few TV actresses. Today they're started by first-class stars
whose products enjoy equal fame with some world top brands. The most
successful start-ups have been those by celebrities with specific personal
style. As celebrities become more and more experienced at the market,
they expand their production scale rapidly, covering almost all the
products of daily life.
However, for every success story, there's a related warning tale of a
celebrity who overvalued his consumer appeal. No matter how famous
the product's origin is, if it fails to impress consumers with its own

qualities it begins to resemble an exercise in self-promotional marketing.
And once the initial(最初的) attention dies down, consumer interest
might fade, loyalty(忠城) returning to tried-and-true labels.
Today, celebrities face even more severe embarrassment. The
pop-cultural circle might be bigger than ever, but its rate of turnover has
speeded up as well. Each misstep threatens to reduce a celebrity's shelf
life, and the same newspaper or magazine that once brought him fame
has no problem picking him to pieces when the opportunity appears. Still,
the ego's(自我的) potential for expansion is limitless. Having already
achieved great wealth and public recognition, many celebrities see
fashion as the next frontier to be conquered. As the saying goes, success
and failure always go hand in hand. Their success as designers might last
only a short time, but fashion-like celebrity-has always been
temporary.
68.Fashion magazines today .
A.seldom put models on the cover
B.no longer put models on the cover

Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English
grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor.
Whenever I speak to a Chinese students they always say, "My spoken
English is poor." However, their spoken English does not have to remain
"poor." I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their
problems with spoken English.

First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a
limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their
vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your
attitude is positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words
that you know.
Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make
mistakes when they are speaking because they are sky and nervous. Yet
students should remember that their goal should be FLUENTLYNOT
ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for
grammar and using the your message across, to talk to someone in
English, as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may
use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter because the person you
are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any
mistakes he hears.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You
have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to
start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive
language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to
improve their spoken English they passively wait for speaking
opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always
remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook, then, you will see

Recently, the introduction of fuel tax has become a widespread
concern. Generally, people hold two different views about it.
Those who support this policy desire to see it carried out as soon as
possible. Their reasons are as follows. Firstly, the policy has been tried
out in some areas in China, so the policy should be successful in the
whole country. Besides, the policy is designed to encourage greater use
of smaller and energy-efficient cars. What's more, it is intended for
people to use cars less often, which will not only be good for the
environment but ease the pressure on traffic as well.
However, some people hold the opposite view. They argue that fuel
tax may raise the cost of transportation as well as other industries. In
addition, the technology for making energy-saving cars is not very

advanced, which leads to a limited choice of such cars.
As far as I'm concerned, though some people may feel unhappy when
paying more for fuel at the beginning, this reform will surely benefit the
environment and help to promote a healthy development of economy in
the long run. Therefore, we should welcome this decision and support it.
