Supported by the Ladies' Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school.‎ Mrs. Gutzlaff's comprador (买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learn English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff's School. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God.‎ ‎【语篇解读】 本文主要讲述作者在澳门就读于外国人开办的男子学校的故事。‎ ‎4.How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff's school?‎ A.Through his father's request.‎ B.Through his father's friend's help.‎ C.Through his own efforts to exams.‎ D.Through Mrs. Gutzlaff's influence.‎ 答案与解析:B 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school”可知,作者是通过父亲的朋友的影响和帮助才上的Mrs. ‎ ‎5.Why did the author's parents put him into an English school?‎ A.It met with Chinese public opinion.‎ B.An English school was more influential.‎ C.He could become a successful interpreter.‎ D.Foreign trade with China was developing fast.‎ 答案与解析:C 细节理解题。根据最后一段的倒数第三句“In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world”可知,作者的父母让他上英国学校可能是因为想让他做翻译,以后能在外贸和外交环境中有一定的优势。‎ ‎【干扰项分析】 根据最后一段的“It has always been a mystery to me...instead of a ‎ traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed”可知,当时去上英国学校是不符合中国传统观念的,中国文化对作者这样的家庭影响力更大,故可排除A项和B项;D项与最后一段的“I can only guess...beginning to grow”不符,故排除。‎ ‎6.What did the author think of his parents' decision to put him into an English school?‎ A.It was skeptical. B.It was wonderful.‎ C.It was thoughtful. D.It was mysterious.‎ 答案与解析:D 考查观点态度。根据最后一段的第三句“It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed”可知,作者至今还不太明白家人把他送到英国学校读书的原因。 ‎ ‎7.What does the underlined word “sequences” in the last sentence probably mean?‎ A.Results. B.Order.‎ C.Tricks. D.Progress.‎ 答案与解析:A 考查词义猜测。根据画线词后的“it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God”可知,上了这个英国学校之后的事情,都不是父母所能掌控的,由此可推知,此处讲的是这件事的后果。 ‎ C ‎(2018·江西名校联盟质检)‎ Several decades ago, educators in the USA began to call attention to a national problem: most students leave American schools without the mathematical skills needed for jobs or for higher education. This was especially true for female and minority students. The Educational Testing Service reported that, in an international survey, American teenagers had the lowest math scores.‎ This situation has been defined as “innumeracy”, or the inability to grasp the basic idea of mathematics. Mathematicians, teachers, and scientists were alarmed by these findings. They looked for the reasons and decided that, in addition to poor education, there are many psychological blocks.‎ Embarrassment about not knowing math can lead to fear in the classroom. Fear can lead to silence because students do not want to draw attention to their lack of knowledge. As a result, those students fall further and further behind. Low_visibility_in_the_classroom_has_not_always_been_recognized_as_a_silent_call_for_help.‎ Math educators decided to try to change that. Math reform is beginning with the educators themselves. Teachers are now being trained to recognize and to help students work through “math anxiety” — the roadblock on their way to gaining competence in mathematics. In addition, math textbooks are being updated to help students understand that math is not a sort of foreign language of numbers. Math is a tool that helps us to analyze patterns and structures, and to discover relationships.‎ Traditional computing skills of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are still being taught, of course. However, there is added emphasis on logical thinking and creative problem solving, to which there may be several equally valid solutions.‎ ‎【语篇解读】 本文讲述了美国学生无法掌握数学基本概念的现象、原因及相应的对策。‎ ‎8.What does the underlined sentence probably mean?‎ A.Students with low scores fear to ask their teachers for help.‎ B.Poor equipment in classrooms limits teens' chances to learn.‎ C.Math anxiety, hardly noticed, is actually a silent call for help.‎ D.Poorsighted students can't see clearly, which is a silent call for help.‎ 答案与解析:C 考查句意理解。根据上下文及画线句前面的“Embarrassment about not knowing math can lead to fear in the classroom. Fear can lead to silence because students do not ‎ want to draw attention to their lack of knowledge”可知,学生会因自己不懂某些数学知识感到尴尬,而这又会使他们产生恐惧心理,恐惧可能导致沉默,因为学生不想让人注意到自己知识匮乏,相应地,老师也就会忽略学生这方面的不足,由此可知,C项最能传达该画线句的含义。‎ ‎9.Which may lead to American students' innumeracy?‎ A.The methods of teaching.‎ B.The difficulty of math itself.‎ C.Students' lack of interest in math.‎ D.Schools' not attaching enough value to it.‎ 答案与解析:A 细节理解题。根据文章第二段中的“in addition to poor education”及第四段的内容尤其是“Math reform is beginning with the educators themselves. Teachers are now being trained to recognize and to help students... gaining competence in mathematics”可知,教学方法可能是美国学生不能掌握数学基本概念的原因。‎ ‎10.What may be discussed in the following paragraph?‎ A.What to be taught in America's revised math programs.‎ B.How to make math reform actually benefit American students.‎ C.How to improve teens' logical thinking and problemsolving abilities.‎ D.Why traditional computing skills are necessary in mathematics education.‎ 答案与解析:C 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“there is added emphasis on logical thinking and creative problem solving, to which there may be several equally valid solutions”可知,文章接下来可能会陈述有关怎样提高学生的逻辑思维能力及创造性地解决问题的能力方面的内容,故选C。‎ ‎11.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A.Mathematic skills needed for higher education.‎ B.The features of America's mathematics education.‎ C.Improvements in mathematics education in the US.‎ D.The importance of mathematics education in the US.‎ 答案与解析:C 考查主旨要义。通读全文可知,本文作者就美国学生无法掌握数学基本概念的现象、原因及相应的对策进行了陈述,故C项最能概括文章的主要内容。‎ D ‎(2018·湖南六校联盟联考)‎ Adding math talk to story time at home is a winning factor for children's math achievement, according to a new research from a university. The study from psychologists Sian Beilock and Susan Levine shows a marked increase in math achievement among children whose families used Bedtime Math, an iPad app that delivers engaging math story problems for parents and children to solve together.‎ Even children who used the app with their parents as little as once a week saw gains in math achievement by the end of the school year. The app's effect was especially strong for children whose parents tend to be anxious or uncomfortable with math.‎ Previous research from this group has demonstrated the importance of adults' attitudes to math for children's math success. For example, a recent study found that mathanxious parents who help their children with math homework actually weaken their children's math achievement.‎ The new findings demonstrate that structured, positive interactions around math at home can cut the link between parents' uneasiness about math and children's low math achievement.‎ ‎ “Many people experience high levels of anxiety when they have to solve a math problem, with a majority of adults feeling at least some worries about math,” said Beilock, professor in psychology and author of Choke, a book about stress and performance. “These mathanxious parents are probably less likely to talk about math at home, which affects how competent their children are in math. Bedtime Math encourages a dialogue between parents and kids about math and offers a way to engage in highquality math interactions in a loweffort, highimpact way.”‎ Study participants included 587 firstgrade students and their parents. Families were given an iPad installed with a version of the Bedtime Math app, with which parents and their children read stories and answer questions involving math, including topics like counting, shapes and ‎ problemsolving. A control group received a reading app that had similar stories without the math content and questions related to reading comprehension instead. Children's math achievement was assessed at the beginning and end of the school year. Parents completed a questionnaire about their nervousness with math.‎ The more times parents and children in the math group used the app, the higher children's achievement on a math assessment at the end of the school year. Indeed, children who frequently used the math app with their parents outperformed similar students in the reading group by almost three months in math achievement at year's end.‎ ‎【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。研究表明,使用Bedtime Math软件的次数越多,孩子在学年末的数学成绩就越好。‎ ‎12.Bedtime Math is an iPad app that ________.‎ A.requires parents and children to answer reading comprehension questions B.assesses children's math achievement and parents' nervousness with math C.encourages children together with their parents to solve math story problems D.teaches children how to count, recognize shapes and solve practical problems 答案与解析:C 细节理解题。根据第一段第二句中的“Bedtime Math, all iPad app that delivers engaging math story problems for parents and children to solve together”可知,Bedtime Math是一款应用软件,该软件鼓励孩子和家长共同解决故事中提出的数学问题,故C项正确。‎ ‎【干扰项分析】 A项错在answer reading comprehension questions,与第一段的“that delivers engaging math story problems”的表述不符;B项与第六段的“Parents completed a questionnaire about their nervousness with math”的表述不符;D项与第六段的“read stories and answer questions involving math, including topics like counting, shapes and problemsolving”的表述不符。‎ ‎13.The previous study found that ________.‎ A.help from mathanxious parents improves children's math achievement B.interactions around math at home will cut off the family relationship C.children's math achievement is related to parents' attitude to math D.children can achieve more success if they see the importance of math 答案与解析:C 细节理解题。根据第三段的第一句“Previous research from this group has demonstrated the importance of adults' attitudes to math for children's math success”可知,先前的研究发现,孩子数学成绩的好坏同父母对数学的态度有关,故C项正确。‎ ‎【干扰项分析】 A项与第三段第二句中的“mathanxious parents...weaken their children's math achievement”的表述不符;B项错在will cut off the family relationship,与第四段的陈述不符;D项文中没有提及。‎ ‎14.We can infer from the passage that ________.‎ A.it is the math problems related to the stories that make a great difference B.children whose parents are uneasy about math are superior to other students C.parents using the app for three months can see gains in math achievement D.the frequency of using the app has nothing to do with children's achievement 答案与解析:A 推理判断题。根据第六段的第二句“Families were given an iPad installed with a version of the Bedtime Math app, with which parents and their children read stories and answer questions involving math, including topics like counting, shapes and problemsolving”可知,Bedtime Math的关键是里面含有与数学相关的故事;据此可以判断,父母和孩子一起讨论与数学有关的故事是保证孩子数学成功的关键,故A项正确。‎ ‎【干扰项分析】 根据第四段中的“structured, positive interactions around math at home can cut the link between parents' uneasiness about math and children's low math achievement”可知,B项陈述与文意相反;根据文章最后一句“Indeed, children who frequently used the math app with their parents outperformed similar students in the reading group by almost three months in math achievement at year's end”可知,C、D项错误。‎ ‎15.What does the author want to tell us?‎ A.Highanxiety parents influence children's attitude to math.‎ B.Frequent use of the app can develop problemsolving ability.‎ C.Loweffort activities create good parentchild relationship.‎ D.Highquality math interactions improve children's performance.‎ 答案与解析:D 目的意图题。根据第五段的“Bedtime Math encourages a dialogue between parents and kids about math and offers a way to engage in highquality math interactions in a loweffort, highimpact way”可知,Bedtime Math软件提高孩子数学成绩的关键是让父母和孩子在高效率的互动中一起解决数学问题;据此可以判断,高质量的有关数学的互动可以提高孩子的成绩,故D项正确。‎ ‎【干扰项分析】 A、C项与作者的意图无关;B项错在develop problemsolving ability,与第六段的“like counting, shapes and problemsolving”的表述不符,B项陈述缩小了范围,以偏概全。‎ Ⅱ.七选五 ‎(2018·河南洛阳统考)‎ Choosing the right college for you is not so easy.
