I was sure that I was to be killed. I became terribly nervous. I fumbled(摸索) in my pockets to
see if there were any cigarettes, which had escaped their search. I found one and because of my
shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches; they had taken those. I
looked through the bars at the guard. He did not make eye contact with me. I called out to him
“Have you got a light?” He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he
came close and lit the match, his eyes unconsciously locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled.
I don't know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness; perhaps it was because, when you get
very close, one to another, it is very hard not to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant,
it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I
know he didn't want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and caused a smile on his lips, too.
He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.
I kept smiling at him, now thinking of him as a person and not just a guard. “Do you have kids?”
he asked. “Yes, here, here.” I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of
my family. He, too, took out the pictures of his family and began to talk about his plans and
hopes for them. My eyes filled with tears. I said that I feared that I'd never see my family again,
never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another
word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the prison, quietly and by back routes,
out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned
back toward the town.

2

smiled. I don't know why I did that

Do you know of anyone who uses the truth to deceive (欺骗)? When someone tells you something
that is true, but leaves out important in formation that should be included, he can give you a
false picture.
For example, some might say, “I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery (彩票). It was great.
I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for on e hundred dollars!”
This guy’s a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought $200 worth of
tickets, and only on e was a winner. He’s really a big loser!
He didn’t say anything that was false, but he left out important information on purpose. That’s
called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest.

Some politicians often use this trick. Let’s say that during Governor Smith’s last term,
her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One
of her opponents(对手) says, “During Governor Smith’s term, the state lost one million jobs!”
that’s true. However, and honest statement would have been, “During Governor Smith’s term,
the state had a net gain of two million jobs.”
Advertisers(广告商) will sometimes use half-truths. It’s against the law to make false
statements so they try to mislead you with the truth. An advertisement might say, “Nine out of
ten doctors advised their patients to take Yucky Pills to cure toothache.” It fails to mention
that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Company.
This kind of deception happens too of often. It’s a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and
sometimes the truth can lie as well.
1. How much did the lottery winner lose?
A. One hundred dollars. B. Two hundred dollars.
C. Three hundred dollars. D. Four hundred dollars.
2. We may infer that the author believes people should _______.
A. buy lottery tickets B. make use of half-truths
C. not take anything at face value D. not trust the Yucky Company
3. What do the underline words “net gain” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. final increase B. big advantage C. large share D. total saving
4. What can we know from the example of the Yucky Pill advertisement?
A. False statements are easy to see through.
B. B. Half-truths are often used to mislead people.
C. Doctors like to act in advertisements.
D. D. Advertisements are based on facts.

We know the famous ones—the Thomas Edison and the Alexander Graham Bells —but what about the
less famous inventors? What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield
wiper(雨刮器)?Shouldn’t we know who they are?
Joan Mclean thinks so. In fact, Mclean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range,
feels so strongly about this matter that she’s developed a course on the topic. In addition to
learning “who” invented “what”, however, Mclean also likes her students to learn the answers
to the “why” and ”how” questions. According to Mclean,” When students learn the answers to
these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more
motivated to give inventing a try.”

So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well, Mary Anderson came up with the idea
in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted
to see the sights, so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that the driver was struggling to
see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why there couldn’t
be a built-in device for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home
to Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas, a lever(操
作杆)on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield
wiper.
Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations,It’s hard to imagine driving without
Garrett A Morgan’s traffic light. It’s equally impossible to picture a world without Katherine
J. Blodgett’s innovation that makes glass invisible, Can you picture life without clear windows
and eyeglasses?
( ) 1. By mentioning “traffic light” and “windshield wiper”, the author indicates that
countless inventions are .
A. beneficial, because their inventors are famous
B. beneficial, though their inventors are less famous
C. not useful, because their inventors are less famous
D. not useful, though their inventors are famous
( ) 2. Professor Joan McLean’s course aims to_____.
A. add color and variety to students’ campus life
B. inform students of the windshield wiper’s invention
C. carry out the requirements by Mountain University
D. prepare students to try their own invention
( ) 3. Tommy Lee’s invention of the unbreakable umbrella was _________.
A. not eventually accepted by the umbrella producer
B. inspired by the story behind the windshield wiper
C. due to his dream of being caught in a rainstorm
D. not related to Professor Joan McLean’s lectures
( ) 4. Which 0f the following can best serve as the title of this passage?
A How to Help Students to Sell Their Inventions to Producers?
B How to Design a Built-in Device for Cleaning the Window?
7
C Shouldn’t We Know Who Invented the Windshield Wiper?
D Shouldn’t We Develop Invention Courses in Universities?
56.观点态度题,根据第一段 but 处:but what about the less famous inventers? What
about….windshield wiper?
了 Mclean 的观点:when students learn the answers to these questions,….prepared to
recognize…inventing a try.
If I had
not heard the story of the windshield wiper’s invention…..i never would have….,可以判断出
文章一开头就点出文章主旨:shouldn’t we know who they are?
