2019高考英语一轮阅读理解选练(7)
A
In the tiny village of Angelica, New York, the post office is more than a place to get mail or send packages. There you’ll find the heart of this lovely community. It’s where villagers meet and greet friends.
When Angelica’s post office was threatened with being closed in the 1980s,a villager,Pat, came up with a plan to save it. “At Christmas time I would hear on the news about towns named Snow or Bethlehem having celebrations,” says Pat, “Why couldn’t we do the same thing with Angelica?”
Pat, who is an artist, created a postal cancellation (邮戳) design featuring an Angelica angel.
She drew her angels in a traditional fashion and submitted her suggestion to the U.S. Postal Service. Once approved, the drawing was carved into a cancellation stamp that could be used for one day only. The postmistress (女邮局局长) then had another idea to make the day even more special calling the post office Angel Station.
The large increase in mail amount saved Angelica’s post office from being closed and keeps the doors open today.
Now it’s tradition that on the first Friday in December, people come to Angelica to mail their Christmas cards. Each year the amount of mail going through the Angelica Post Office increases during late November and early December. Stamp collectors from around the world have accepted the Angel Station cancellation, some sending mail from as far away as France.
Because the stamp is destroyed each season, Pat draws a new angel that conveys season’s greetings from Angel Station every year. Post offices may close in other parts of the country, but this tiny one continues.
1.What did Pat do to save the post office?
A. She invented a new cancellation.
B. She hosted Christmas celebrations.
C. She gave the office a better name.

2.Which of the following can best describe Pat?
A. Curious and friendly.
B. Humorous and intelligent.

3.What can we learn about Angelica’s post office from the passage?
A. It was completely closed in the 1980s.

(2015·北京东城区综合练习二)
According to game maker Hasbro, approximately 750 million people have played the wellknown game Monopoly since it was invented in the 1930s.Charles Darrow is typically credited as the inventor of the world’s most famous board game. However, he likely originated his version of Monopoly from one of several other games similarly involving house buying and selling that were already in existence before the 1930s when he got
his patent(专利) for the game.
A probable reason that Darrow’s Monopoly became the hugely successful game that still exists today is that he took a great approach to producing it.Other similar games existed, but they had no board or regulation pieces. With the help of his wife and son, who decorated the sets with details, Darrow personally created the pieces and boards that became the first Monopoly game sets. His extra work in creating the entire environment that players needed gave his game something extra that other variations did not have.
Darrow had success in selling his games in various parts of the country.Several Philly area stores were the first to carry his game and sell it in large quantities. However, Darrow had difficulty selling his game to the major game producer of the time, Parker Brothers. He was told that his game was too complex and had fundamental errors in its design that would limit its appeal.Eventually, the continued sales he managed on his own forced Parker Brothers to reassess the worth of his game.In the end, the company agreed to produce the game and shortly afterwards it became the bestselling game in the country.
That success turned Charles Darrow into a millionaire, which is the heavy irony.Darrow initially began work on Monopoly to help support himself and his family following the financial troubles tied to the stock market crash of 1929.Thus, Charles Darrow became a millionaire by producing a game that allows “regular” people to feel like they are buying and selling real homes and land like millionaires.
1.What made Darrow’s Monopoly different from other similar games?
A.The way of avoiding financial troubles.
B.The safe environment created for players.
C.The buying and selling of real homes and land.
D.The specific pieces and a playing board in each set.
2.The author suggests in Paragraph 3 that ________.
A.Monopoly was initially too complex to play
B.Darrow failed to make expected profit in Philly
C.certain errors in Monopoly limited its attraction
D.some people once doubted Monopoly would be popular
3.What does the underlined word “irony” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Financial gain. B.Unexpected result.
C.Marketing plan. D.Unsatisfying reward.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The difficulties in Darrow’s life.
B.The comparison of some board games.
C.The way to the success of Darrow’s game.
D.The business management of Parker Brothers.
【解题导语】 本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了Darrow的大富翁游戏以及他因此获得的成功。
1.解析:选D。细节理解题。根据第二段第二句“Other similar games existed, but they had no board or regulation pieces.”可知,答案选D。
2.解析:选D。推理判断题。根据第三段第四句“He was told that his game was too complex and had fundamental errors in its design that would limit its
appeal.”

Howling is a behavior commonly observed among a wolf nark. An animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling was an important means of communication each other. There are different explants of a wolf’s howl and it appears that there may be more to discover.
One theory is that wolves howl to bend better together. It’s almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together. Perhaps something similar to people feeling a sense of involvement with each other when singing a song together . But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H. Harington, a professor who studies wolf behavior.
Indeed, there have been tines when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a exhorts, and the next, quarreling anions each other. It appears that usually the lowest-tanking menthes of the pack may actually be “punished” for Joining in the churs at times. So is howling a way to strcagthen a social boad or just a way to reconfirm status among its members? ——Why do welves howl for sure?
What is cleat, however, is that howling is often used among packmates to locate each other. Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that woloves may separate from one another at times. When this happens, howling appcars to be an ercellent means of gathering.
Howling, interestingly, is a contagious behaviour. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to occat in the morning, as if wolves were doing some sotr of “roll rall”where wolves all howl togeter to howl, very likely
others will follow. This is often seen to occar in the morning, as if wolves were doing w some sotr of “roll call”where wolves all howl together to repotr their pteence.

A.The act of calling each other. B.the sense of accomplishment.
C.The act of hunting for something. D.The sense of belonging to a group.
2.Why does Harrington think the“secial boad”theory may be wrong?
A.Wolves separate from each other after howling.
B.Wolves tend to protect their hunting grounds.
C.Wolves sometimes have quarrels after howling together.
D.Wolves of low rank are encouraged to join in the chorus.
3.Reseatchers are sure that wolves often howl to______.
A.show their ranks
B….
C.repotr the missing ones
D.express their lonelingess
4.“Howling… is a contagious behaviour”(in the last paragraph)means_______.

While waiting to pick up a friend at an airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one of those lifechanging experiences that you hear other people talk about—the kind that happens to you unexpectedly. To me, this happened and was only two feet away from me.
Locating my friend among the passengers, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.
First he walked to his youngest son (maybe 6 years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other's face, I heard the father say,“It's so good to see you, son. I missed you so much!” His son smiled somewhat shyly, and replied softly,“Me, too, Dad!”
Then the man stood up, gazed into the eyes of his oldest son (maybe 9 or 10) and while cupping his son's face in his hands said, “You're already quite a young man. I love you very much, Zach!” They too hugged a most loving, tender hug.
While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or oneandahalfyear old) was squirming (扭动) excitedly in her mother's arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father. The man said,“Hi, baby girl!” as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rocking her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder, motionless in pure contentment.
After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared,“I've saved the best for last!” and went to give his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed, “I love you so much!” They stared into each other's eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands.
For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn't possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally attentive I was in the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm's length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask,“Wow! How long have you two been married?”
“Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” he replied, without
breaking his gaze from his lovely wife's face. “Well then, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. “Two whole days!”
Two days? I was stunned. I had assumed he'd been gone for at least several weeks—if not months. I know my expression betrayed me. “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!”
The man suddenly stopped smiling.
He looked me straight in the eye, and with forcefulness that burned right into my soul, he told me something that left me a different person, “Don't hope, friend... decide!” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said,“God bless!”
With that, he and his family turned and walked away together. I was still watching that exceptional man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What'cha looking at?” Without hesitating, and with a curious sense of certainty, I replied,“My future!”
