Egloo is a clever little heater that uses the power of tealights (candles) to heat space up to 20 square feet for as little as 10 cents a day, without using any electricity.
Developed by Marco Zagaria, a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Egloo is both cheap to use and eco-friendly. Made up of two small terracotta domes(赤陶圆顶) and a metal tray, the device takes advantage of the natural heating ability of these materials, drawing heat from just four tealights placed inside it and sending it out in your living space.
It may look basic in its shape, materials used and the fact that it has no fancy switches, but Egloo is actually 3D-printed so it’s actually a lot more high-tech than most electric heaters on the market today. At about seven inches wide and weighing just over two pounds, Egloo won’t take up too much space, and can be easily moved around at any time. Just make sure you don’t touch it directly, as it tends to get pretty hot.
26 / 26
Egloo started crowd-funded through an Indiegogo campaign last year, blowing past its initial goal of $30,000 and getting $262,513 by the end of the campaign. It’s currently available for purchase via the Egloo website, for anywhere between $50 and $100, depending on size, color and glaze. Considering some users pay that much for heat every couple of weeks, the price seems very attractive.
25. What does “it” refer to in the 2nd paragraph?
A. Heat. B. Egloo.
C. Electricity. D. Tealight.
26. What should we be cautious of when using Egloo?
A. Its size. B. Its weight.
C. Its temperature. D. Its price.
27. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Egloo can be bought in stores anywhere.
B. Egloo had planned to raise $30,000 at first.
C. Egloo is much cheaper online than in stores.
D. Egloo got investment from the government.

Cheynes Beach Whaling Station is Australia’s last whaling station. Operated since 1952 it is now closed. This brings an end to whaling activity that has forced humpbacks(座头鲸),
26 / 26
southern right whales, and sperm whales(抹香鲸) almost to die out in Australian waters.
Improved technology such as faster boats and later factory ships and the use of aircraft to find groups of whales increased the efficiency of whaling and reduced the number of whales. This forced the Australian government to prevent all whaling from happening before whales died out in Australian waters.
Tangalooma in Queensland was once the largest land-based whaling station in the southern hemisphere(半球). It closed in 1962 after reducing the number of humpbacks off the east coast of Australia from about 15,000 to 500 whales in ten years. Humpbacks have been protected under Australian law since 1963.
The first Greenpeace activity in Australia saw people take action against Cheynes Beach Whaling Company ships, drawing international attention to the industry at that time.
Whaling was one of Australia's first industries. Whale oil was used for lighting and candle making. Later the oil was used in cosmetics(化妆品) while whale meat was used for animal food. Whale bones were used in women s clothing.
The value of the industry became different greatly over the years as the prices of whale oil were affected by market influences. The introduction of vegetable oil and new ways of
26 / 26
getting petroleum oil in the USA in the late 1850s reduced the world’ s dependence on whale oil.
16,000 sperm whales have been killed in Australia waters since 1952. The final season’s catch for the Cheynes Beach. Station was 698 sperm whales.
28. How did new technology influence whales?
A. They were better protected.
B. They were left in safer environments.
C. They were used more effectively.
D. They were caught more easily.
29. What do we know about Tangalooma?
A. It was set up in the sea.
B. It didn’t kill any whales after 1962.
C. It was protected under Australian law.
D. It used to be the world’s largest whaling station.
30. What did Greenpeace members probably think of whaling?
A. It was cruel.
B. It was acceptable.
C. It was internationally popular.
D. It was a slowly developing industry.
31. Which of the following was a use of whale oil?
A. Improving health. B. Making clothes.

For fans of Tai Chi, the wait to see it get global recognition may soon be over.
China has nominated (提名) Tai Chi to be included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. A final decision will be made later this year. The list was introduced by UNESCO in 2008 to celebrate and protect the world’s cultural diversity. It’s hoped that Tai Chi will become China’s 30th entry on the list. But there are fears that other countries could beat China to UNESCO’s list. Now both South Korea and Japan are competing with us to get Tai Chi registered.
Tai Chi, a kind of martial art, has been practiced in China for centuries. It combines slow movements, deep breathing and meditation(冥想). Every movement in Tai Chi represents an important part of traditional Chinese philosophy—harmony. “It is not just a traditional activity. It is deeply rooted in many areas of Chinese culture and is connected to ancient Chinese civilization.” said Zhu Xianghua, the son of the famous Tai Chi master Zhu Tiancai from the village of Chenjiagou, Henan. That is widely thought to be the birthplace of Tai Chi.
26 / 26
Although it’s popular, the idea that Tai Chi is for the elderly has stopped many young people practicing the ancient martial art. They think of it as a slow exercise, which is better suited for their grandparents. Many young people are turning to Indian Yoga, which was placed on UNESCO’s list last year. About 10 million Chinese people practice yoga in 2014, up from 4 million in 2009. Many of them do yoga to keep fit and relieve stress.
Tai chi is also a great way to keep healthy. Researchers from the American college of Rheumatology found that it can help manage several diseases. At the same time, more efforts are being made by China to get young people to practice this kind of martial art.
32. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Tai Chi and Indian Yoga. B. Recognition on Way for Tai Chi.
C. Sports among Young Generation. D. Popularity on Way for Tai Chi.
33. What does the writer want to convey in Paragraph 3?
A. Tai Chi is ancient and native in China.
B. Tai Chi is popular in Henan province.
C. Chinese culture is based on Tai Chi.
26 / 26
D. Tai Chi leads to a harmonious society.
34. The author mentioned Indian Yoga to ________.
A. compare Tai Chi with Indian Yoga
B. provide ways for the protection of Tai Chi
C. explain why Chinese youth prefer Yoga
D. show how popular Indian Yoga is in China
35. What is likely to be written about after the last paragraph?
A. What can be done to promote Tai Chi.
