Scientists from eight universities will spend a month aboard the ship searching for clues to a mystery. Their basic question: why has a high mountain risen from the ridges (山脊) and hills along a fascinating geological structure called the MidAtlantic Ridge? Far beneath the surface of the ocean, the 12,000foot Atlantis Massif is nearly twice as tall as other mountains in the area, and no one is certain why. ‎ The MidAtlantic Ridge has long fascinated scientists, because it is one of the regions on the Earth—all located underwater—where new crust (地壳) is formed. As the Earth's tectonic plates (地质构造板块) pull apart at the ridge, hot rocks from below rise to the surface and cool into stone. Many centuries from now, the forces of nature will use some of those rocks to build new mountains along the shorelines, constantly reforming the planet that we call home. The ridge itself is enormous, winding south from Iceland for more than 6,000 miles, and it is one of the largest mountain ranges on the Earth. But it is completely underwater, usually at least 12,000 feet deep, except for the few areas where mountains poke (伸出) through the surface. ‎ 21‎ However, most of the mountains along the ridge are relatively modest in size. That was why Donna Blackman of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California, was so surprised when she and Joe Cann of the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom discovered the Atlantis Massif while mapping the ridge a few years ago. ‎ Mountains are common midocean ridges, but this one is a dandy. It is four to six times wider than other mountains in the area and it towers over its neighbors like a mountain. ‎ Blackman wanted to know how it got there and why it was so big. She is the chief scientist on the expedition. Coprincipal investigators are Deborah Kelly of the University of Washington, an expert on the interaction (相互作用) of fluids with oceanic rock, and Jeffrey Karson, a structural geologist at Duke University. ‎ ‎21.The scientists aboard the ship intend to ________. ‎ A.collect information about the Atlantis Massif B.explore the mysterious underwater world C.study the geological structure of Bermuda D.look for the MidAtlantic Ridge 解析:选A 细节理解题。根据文章第一段第一句“...recently and headed off to sea in search of a mountain”可知,科学家们此次航行的目的是收集关于一座海底山的信息。 ‎ ‎22.The second paragraph is mainly about ________. ‎ A.the history of the MidAtlantic Ridge B.the landscape of the MidAtlantic Ridge C.unusual things about the MidAtlantic Ridge D.the mountains along the MidAtlantic Ridge 解析:选C 段落大意题。 ‎ ‎23.We can learn from the text that ________. ‎ A.Donna Blackman is a geologist from Britain B.the research team is made up of three scientists C.the Atlantis Massif was found by Blackman and Cann D.the MidAtlantic Ridge is the largest mountain range on the Earth 解析:选C 推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“...when she and Joe Cann of the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom discovered the Atlantis Massif 21‎ ‎ while...” 根据第三段中的“That was why Donna Blackman of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California”可知A项不正确;根据文章第一段第二句“Scientists from eight universities will...” ‎ B Standing in the shower waiting for the water to heat up could be a thing of the past, along with all the wasted water. ‎ Three and a half years ago, Lindy Honeychurch, a thirtyyearold Australian fulltime mum living on a farm outside Launceston, didn't consider herself a very good water saver. Neither did her partner who often complained about it, and with good reason. Their farm had to rely on tank water and solar power, which meant water had to be trucked in if the tank water ran out in summer. ‎ ‎“I looked at where I could save because I could lead an easier life without the nagging,” she said. Modeling her idea on a car thermostat (恒温器), Lindy used her kids' magnetic drawing board to design a device that diverts the cold slug of water back down the hot water pipe. ‎ ‎“The first aim when I started designing was to keep it really small and simple without having to use power. I wanted to keep it as something that everyone could use,” said Lindy. ‎ She got a patent for her design and took it to some engineers to have it tested out. At first, even though the engineers were amazed that she wasn't an engineer, she said she sometimes found it hard to be taken seriously. ‎ ‎“My age was a real factor because in the plumbing and manufacturing industries you're dealing with people who've got a lot of experience,” she said. ‎ But the engineers soon saw the potential of her design, which she estimated would save average families between 14,000 to 22,000 liters per year. ‎ ‎“When you transfer that to the dollar savings on tank water, you have to buy water, it can be a saving of $600 per year,” said Lindy. ‎ Armed with positive feedback from engineers and people using rainwater tanks, her design proved a great success. Soon she found a manufacturer early this year, and completed a state government commercial ready course to help her research, her markets and distribution channels. ‎ With an Australian Standard for her device just approved, she's about to start manufacturing and wishes to see her products on the shelves within the next few months. ‎ 21‎ Once that happens, Lindy plans to return to being a fulltime mum. ‎ ‎24.The second paragraph of the text is mainly about ________. ‎ A.Lindy's unhappy family B.Lindy's comfortable farm life C.the background to Lindy's invention D.the procedure of Lindy's invention 解析:选C 主旨大意题。 C。‎ ‎25.It is ________ that drove Lindy to invent a watersaving device. ‎ A.her dull life as a housewife B.the difficulty in getting water on her farm C.her husband's request D.the need of increasing agricultural water 解析:选B 细节理解题。从文章第二段最后一句“Their farm had to rely on tank water and solar power, which meant water had to be trucked in if the tank water ran out in summer. ”可知,正是因为Lindy的农场得水困难才导致Lindy想发明一种节水装置,故答案为B。‎ ‎26.What happened when Lindy first took her design to some engineers?‎ A.They did not pay much attention to it. ‎ B.They believed it was a great invention. ‎ C.They helped her test it out immediately. ‎ D.They laughed at her because it was of no use at all. 根据文章第五段最后一句中的“she said she sometimes found it hard to be taken seriously”可知,那些工程师们对Lindy的设计并非很重视,故答案为A。‎ ‎27.The underlined word “nagging” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.‎ A.discouraging B.praising C.encouraging D.complaining 解析:选D 词义猜测题。根据文章第二段第二句“Neither did her partner who often complained about it, and with good reason. ”可知,Lindy的丈夫经常因为水的问题抱怨她,故可推断答案为D。‎ C 21‎ Hightech clothing with embedded biosensors (生物传感器) and an Internet connection could respond to your mood and help you get through the day. ‎ The new “smart” clothing contains wireless biosensors that measure heart rate and temperature, small speakers, and other electronics that are wirelessly connected to a handheld smart phone or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).Data from the sensors is sent to the handheld device where it is changed into one of 16 emotional states, which clues (给……暗示或提示) a previouslybuilt database to send the wearer some inspirational messages. ‎ These “mood memos” could be a text message, which scrolls on a display on the clothes' sleeve, a video or a photograph displayed on the handheld device, or a sound that comes through the embedded speakers. The researchers have made two prototype (雏形) garments so far, a male version and a female version, and they plan to display them at museums over the next two years. They are also looking at medical and fashion applications. ‎ The sounds, photos and videos sent to the wearer aren't arbitrary. Instead, the messages are spoken by a friend or loved one. “When you first wear the clothes, you turn on the device and you tell it what person you want to channel that day,” said Professor Barbara Layne. “That could be your lover who's away, your deceased (已故的)parent, your best friend and whoever you want to be with that day. ”‎ ‎“During the day, you can set it for as many times as you want. The clothes will take your biometric readings, your biosensing data, analyze it on that emotional map and then go up to the Internet, to the database which relates that emotional state, and bring you back something that you need,” said Layne. ‎ Layne and her codeveloper Jams Jefferies, along with their team members have not yet pursued commercial applications but are showing a lot of interest. ‎ ‎“The interest is really huge from all kinds of sectors,”Layne said. “One example is the medical area, which could use the smart clothing to promote wellbeing, maybe for someone who's ill, either housebound or in hospital where wearing this kind of jacket can make them feel better. ”‎ ‎【解题导语】 科学家们研制出一种新的智能衣服,穿上后,它可以根据你的心情做出反应,给你提供一些积极的信息,从而改善你的心境。‎ ‎28.The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________. ‎ A.a handheld device B.temperature of the wearer 21‎ C.data from the sensors D.heart rate of the wearer 解析:选C 代词指代题。从第二段第二句中的“Data from the sensors is sent to the handheld device where it is changed into one of 16 emotional states”可知,被转化成十六种情感状态的是从感应器那里获得的数据,故选C。‎ ‎29.What do we know about the new smart clothing?‎ A.It will be sold in the market in two years. ‎ B.It sends out messages in 3 different forms. ‎ C.It can be changed into 16 different colors. ‎ D.It is made up of various electronics. 根据第二段第一句中的“and other electronics that are wirelessly connected to a handheld smart phone or Personal Digital Assistant”可知,这种智能衣服是由各种电子器件构成的,故选D。‎ ‎30.The smart clothing is mainly used to ________. ‎ A.inspire a person according to his mood B.accompany a person as a friend or loved one C.provide a person with academic information D.help a person remember his deceased parents 解析:选A 细节理解题。由第五段最后一句中的“bring you back something that you need”和第二段最后一句中的“send the wearer some inspirational messages”可知,正确答案为A。‎ ‎31.Who might benefit from the smart clothing first?‎ A.Soldiers. B.Patients. ‎ C.Lawyers. D.Teachers. 结合最后一段第二句中研究人员给出的例子“One example is the medical area”和第三段的最后一句“They are also looking at medical and fashion applications. ”可知,正确答案为B。‎ D Waldorf schools ban computers to help kids learn through creative and tactile (能触知的) tasks. Funny enough, many Silicon Valley bigwigs (大人物) are on board. ‎ This may be the era of wired classrooms, but not everyone is convinced computers help kids learn. The New York Times reported recently that many Silicon Valley parents, who work for top tech companies like Google and Apple, are sending their 21‎ ‎ children to pricey Waldorf schools where classrooms are devoid (缺乏的) of technology. The centuryold Waldorf philosophy advocates learning through physical activity and creativity. Students might acquire problemsolving skills through knitting (编织), or learn fractions (分数) by dividing up a cake. Do kids really learn better without hightech gadgetry?‎ This philosophy is good for kids and parents. “These schools are on to something”, says Amy Windsor at Babble. “When I think back to my techfree childhood, I can't help but idealize it and think that it would be good for my kids to have the same imaginationstirring, gadgetfree experience, at least until their teen years. And if parents put down their gadgets too, this philosophy could be a boon (恩惠) to the whole family. ”‎ And there's some science to it. “An increasing stack of scientific studies shows that computers inhibit learning rather than help,” says Amy Graft at the San Francisco Chronicle. Researchers have found that educational software doesn't help children retain information or learn to read any better than oldschool methods. Some scientists have even found that too much computer time is bad for kids' brains, so it might be best to hold off on the gadgets until after elementary school. ‎ But technology isn't all bad. “There is a real danger in letting our children rely too much on technology and not get out and learn in the dirt of the real world,” says Julie Ryan Evans at The Stir,“but you don't want kids to fall behind their peers in this techcentric world. I've also witnessed how much fun my kids have, and how much they learn, with educational apps and games. ”‎ ‎【解题导语】 在电脑流行的今天,硅谷的科技大腕们却把孩子送到没有电脑的学校去接受教育。‎ ‎32.Many Silicon Valley parents are sending their children to pricey Waldorf schools to make them ________. ‎ A.be creative bigwigs B.learn in the traditional way C.get out of technology addiction D.finish some simple tasks 解析:选B 推理判断题。 B。‎ ‎33.Students in Waldorf schools might acquire problemsolving skills ________. ‎ 21‎ A.by playing creative games B.through looselyorganized events C.by solving actual problems D.on playing and eating occasions 解析:选C 细节理解题。从文章第二段第三句中“The centuryold Waldorf philosophy advocates learning through physical activity and creativity. Students might acquire problemsolving skills through knitting, or learn fractions by dividing up a cake. ”可知,孩子是通过编织、切分蛋糕等实际操作来学习技能的,故选C。‎ ‎34.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that ________. ‎ A.Amy Graft supports kids' using a computer B.only educational software is suitable for children C.it's necessary for children to use a computer D.it's bad for children to use a computer too early 解析:选D 推理判断题。 D。‎ ‎35.In the last paragraph, the author mainly intends to ________. ‎ A.give a different opinion B.question the researchers C.show his support for Waldorf philosophy D.give a summary of the experts' views 解析:选A 写作意图题。 ‎ Dear Seth,‎ You're only three years old, and at this point in your life you can't read, much less understand what I'm going to try to tell you in this letter. Some people are so sad and disappointed at their unsuccessful attempts that they will never pick up the courage to have another try. Other people view repeated failures as most natural things on the way to achievement—they will keep on trying until they succeed in the end. ‎ Personally, I agree with the second group of people. If you have only had wonderful things happen to you, how can you become brave? Few people can be successful in the first place, and failure can teach us much more than success. From now on I will not be much too discouraged at failures. On the contrary,I will stand up to the next challenge on the way to my goal with hope. ‎ 21‎
