The real problem relates to the possibility that artificial intelligence (AI) may become extremely good at achieving something other than what we really want. In 1960 a wellknown mathematician Norbert Wiener, who founded the field of cybernetics (控制论), put it this way:“If we use, to achieve our purposes, a mechanical agency with whose operation we cannot effectively interfere (干预), we had better be quite sure that the purpose put into the machine is the purpose which we really desire.”
[2]A machine with a specific purpose has another quality, one that we usually associate with living things: a wish to preserve its own existence. For the machine, this quality is not inborn, nor is it something introduced by humans; it is a logical consequence of the simple fact that the machine cannot achieve its original purpose if it is dead. So if we send out a robot with the single instruction of fetching coffee, it will have a strong desire to secure success by disabling its own off switch or even killing anyone who might interfere with its task. If we are not careful, then, we could face a kind of global chess match against very determined, super intelligent machines whose objectives conflict with our own, with the real world as the chessboard.
[3]The possibility of entering into and losing such a match should concentrate the minds of computer scientists. Some researchers argue that we can seal the machines inside a kind of firewall, using them to answer difficult questions but never allowing them to affect the real world. Unfortunately, that plan seems unlikely to work: we have yet to invent a firewall that is secure against ordinary humans, let alone super intelligent machines.
[4]Solving the safety problem well enough to move forward in AI seems to be possible but not easy. There are probably decades in which to plan for the arrival of super intelligent machines. But the problem should not be dismissed out of hand, as it has been by some AI researchers. Some argue that humans and machines can coexist as long as they work in teams — yet that is not possible unless machines share the goals of humans. Others say we can just “switch them off” as if super intelligent machines are too stupid to think of that possibility. Still others think that super intelligent AI will never happen. On September 11, 1933, famous physicist Ernest Rutherford stated, with confidence, “Anyone who expects a source of power in the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.” However, on September 12, 1933, physicist Leo Szilard invented the neutroninduced (中子诱导) nuclear chain reaction.

选A 根据第一段中的“The real problem relates to the possibility that artificial intelligence (AI) may become extremely good at achieving something other than what we really want.”
选A 根据第二段中的“A machine with a specific purpose has another quality, one that we usually associate with living things:a wish to preserve its own existence.”
选D 根据第三段中的“Some researchers argue that we can seal the machines inside a kind of firewall, using them to answer difficult questions but never allowing them to affect the real world.”
选C 根据第四段中的“Solving the safety problem well enough to move forward in AI seems to be possible but not easy.”

A
At the end of every year, Time picks the best 25 inventions that are
“making the world better and smarter”. Here we have picked three inventions that could be a part of your life in the near future.
The levitating (悬浮的) light bulb
This special light bulb was invented by U.S. artist and scientist Simon Morris. He got the idea of making a light bulb float from hoverboards (悬浮滑板), which he used to dream of having as a kid.
But the floating is not the most amazing part. The rejection force between the opposite ends of the magnets (磁铁), which were put in the bottom of the bulb and in the wooden base, does the job. What's new here is a technology called induction It allows the light bulb to get power from the base even they are not in contact.
Shoes that tie themselves
They're not what you think — shoelaces that tie themselves in the way we tie them. Instead, the new shoes have small motors that control their laces. When you step in them, your feet will hit a sensor (传感器) in the shoes and the motor will automatically tighten the laces.
But the shoes weren't just designed for lazy people's needs. They could actually give athletes an advantage during competition. They are also useful for people who cannot move their arms or fingers easily.
The notouch thermometer (体温计)
Taking your body temperature usually means putting a thermometer in your armpits (腋窝) and staying still for minutes. It may be easy for you, but it's an impossible task for little kids.
Now, with the new thermometer, users can simply put it 2.5 centimeters from a patient's forehead and press the button, and it can get reading in two seconds.

B.its inventor is more than a scientist
C.it makes use of the rejection of the magnets
D.induction allows it to get power even when unconnected with the base
根据第三段最后两句“What's new here is ...It allows the light bulb to get power from the base even they are not in contact.”
2.How is the notouch thermometer different from other ones?
A.It makes it easier to take kids' temperature.
B.You need wait two minutes for the reading.
C.You don't need to press the button.
D.It should be put in one's armpit.
故选A项。
3.In which part of a newspaper can you possibly read this text?
A.Education. B.Sports.
C.Science. D.Entertainment.

(2018·长春普通中学模拟)He had more than 160 reports as a reporter on the Metro desk and more than 170 in 19 months as a national journalist based in Kansas City, Mo. But perhaps the most important piece of writing that A. G. Sulzberger did for The New York Times before Wednesday — when he was named deputy publisher — was not an article and was not published in The Times, but was all about The Times.
That work came to be known as the “innovation (创新) report”, which zeroed in on the importance of a digital future for the newspaper his family has owned since 1896 and said The Times risked losing its leading place if it did not make sweeping changes.
In a conversation in his office on Wednesday, Mr. Sulzberger said he saw the innovation report and the thinking that led to his conclusions as “a wakeup call to the newsroom that we were at risk of missing the moment”.
“It was always easy to see how changes will endanger the traditions of the place,” he said, “but what became really clear to me was not changing was the more dangerous course if we cared about the traditions of the place.”
Unlike some of the former deputy publishers in his role, Mr. Sulzberger has been more experienced in the newsroom than in advertising or consumer marketing. Still, his colleagues described him as a quick study whose modesty masked deep inner confidence. Besides, in the newsroom or out on an assignment, Mr. Sulzberger did not show off his connection to The Times' owners. “I recognized the name,” said Vincent Bova, a video editor who figured in a feature article that Mr. Sulzberger wrote in 2010. “I mean, I knew I was dealing with royalty. There was no reason for me to bring that up with him, and he didn't.” So Mr. Sulzberger, in some way, has qualified himself for the position since long time ago.

A.urge revolutions in The Times
B.gain the position of deputy publisher
C.promote changes in New York City
D.show directions to his family future

5.What is the biggest threat to traditional media according to Mr. Sulzberger?
A.Scientific developments. B.Rapid social changes.
C.Their own stubbornness. D.Decreasing readers.
根据第二段中的“and said The Times risked losing its leading place if it did not make sweeping changes”和文章中提到的“innovation report”可知,A.
6.How does the author show us what Mr. Sulzberger is like in the last paragraph?
A.By comparing him with others.
B.By interviewing him in person.
C.By giving examples of his routines.
D.By quoting comments from others.
7.What does the author think of Mr. Sulzberger according to the passage?
A.Casual. B.Objective.
C.Admirable. D.Critical.
