Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2018·湖北八校联考)My daughter went to see The Wild One recently and she commented that Marlon Brando was wearing jeans so long ago.Of course he helped set the trend,so that got me thinking about the link between films and trends in fashion.Fashion and films have gone hand in hand for long. The Wild One is a good example:it
appeared
in 1954,starring Brando.Dressed in a black leather motorcycle jacket, leather cap and jeans,he created a look which is still considered “cool” today.Everyone from Madonna to a middle-aged man is seen wearing the classic leather motorcycle jacket.
Another strong influence on fashion trends was Breakfast at Tiffany’s,starring Audrey Hepburn. She made famous the simple black dress that looks perfect at either a cocktail party or just standing around an expensive department store like Tiffany’s with a pastry and coffee in your hand,as Audrey Hepburn does in the film. She looks so elegant, wearing simple but beautiful dresses, big dark glasses and a string of pearls around her neck.Audrey Hepburn still influences women’s fashion with her “Tiffany’s look”.
In more modern times, the film star Uma Thurman created a major fashion trend when she appeared in the film Pulp Fiction, made in 1994.Her style was very simple. Her black trousers, crisp white shirt and hairstyle were copied by women in the world.
Influencing fashion trends can often be about timing. The movie Memoirs of a Geisha came just in time to start a trend in Japanese fashion. It starred the Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi, who wore beautiful silk kimonos(和服),and it won an Oscar for Costume Design. Many travel companies picked up on the trend and ran“geisha trips”to Japan. The film has also led to a regained interest in kimonos. It is now
quite common to see young Japanese women wearing kimonos not just on traditional occasions, but at various social events. The fashion is also beginning to spread to western countries.

For most of my 20 years as a teacher, summer vacation was my time to relax. So why was I standing in the schoolyard of an unfamiliar school, supervising recess (监督课间休息),wearing myself out for a summer teaching job? The extra paychecks were nice, but I lacked the energy of my younger colleagues. Like Stella. She was in her early twenties, and made keeping up with the kids look effortless. She reminded me of myself, back when I was a bright-eyed student teacher at Ramona Elementary...
I’d never forget my first day.I was too full of energy.Nervous energy. My supervising teacher was watching, and I wanted to make a good impression.I asked my third graders to take out their crayons for the day’s lesson. All of them obeyed.Except one.A girl with two long, dark braids (辫子).Everyone called her Estrellita,or “little star.” Why was she unprepared for class? I demanded to know.
“My sister has my crayons,” she said.
“You should each have your own crayons,” I told her.“That’s no excuse.”
“There are 10 children in my family,” Estrellita said quietly, her big brown eyes never leaving my face.“We have to take turns.”
I was taken__aback.I’d completely misjudged the situation. All day Estrellita’s words played on my mind. The next morning I bought a pack of crayons to leave on Estrellita’s desk. She was so happy! That experience taught me an important lesson. Every student had a unique set of challenges—it was my mission to help my students overcome them. That mission used to energize me.
Recess was almost over.Stella turned to me and we started chatting.“How long have you been teaching?” she asked.I told her I’d started twenty years ago,at Ramona Elementary.
“I went to school there twenty years ago!”Stella said.I looked at her again, this time really seeing her. Those big brown eyes. That long, dark hair...
“Did you use to have two long braids?” I said.“We called you Estrellita ...”
Stella shouted.“You!You gave me the crayons!”
She’d become a teacher. To help students like I did.Even doing something that small mattered.
That summer,I threw myself into teaching with a renewed sense of purpose.Estrellita had taught me a lesson once again.

Dear Christina,
I am Li Hua. I’m writing to apologize to you for not being able to participate in the “Chinese Traditional Culture Day” activity to be held on Saturday morning with you as we planned last week.
To be honest,I wish I could join in the activity, but I am afraid I will not be available because I was informed yesterday that I would have to go to Beijing for a contest on the morning of Saturday. That is why I can’t go with you. I am awfully sorry for breaking my promise and I apologize for any inconvenience it brings to you. I hope you can understand me.
Wish you a good time there.
Yours,
Li Hua
