Toronto Public Library is conducting a program allowing users to access light
therapy lamps at two branches,Malvern and Brentwood.
Light therapy lamps are designed to imitate spring and summer light levels as
a way to treat the “winter blues” or seasonal affective disorder (SAD),a type of
depression with symptoms that include fatigue, anxiety, weight gain and sleep
disorders.
The places to use it
The branches participating in the program are Malvern and Brentwood. These lamps
are placed in the branch for use in the library. Each location has two lamps, available
on a firstcome, firstserved basis. The lamps cannot be taken out of the library.
The reason to provide it through the library
Research by the Canadian Mental Health Association suggests that 2-3% of the
general population of Ontario have SAD and another 15% have a less severe experience.
Light therapy lamps can be expensive for most people to purchase. This service
provides all Torontonians with the opportunity to use light therapy if they need it.
The use of a light therapy lamp
Turn the lamp on and sit, read or work in front of it for 20-30 minutes. For
sensitive users, gradual exposure is recommended.Sit about 2 feet away.Face the lamp

2
and allow the light to shine on your face but not directly in your eyes.Do not stare
directly into the light.Adjust the angle of the lamp to suit your position.
The effect of the light therapy
Light therapy is considered to be safe.Side effects are rare and if they occur,
they are usually mild and can include nausea, headaches and/or eye strain. There are
no known longterm side effects of light therapy. If you experience discomfort, stop
using the lamp and contact your doctor.
The light therapy lamp should not be viewed as a cure, and other measures including
staying fit, sleeping well and eating healthy are also very beneficial for treating
the symptoms fo mood disorders.Use of the lamp is at your own judgement.Toronto Public
Library is not responsible for any health issues related to the use of the lamp.

I went online to check if my pay was in my bank account. To my amazement,I
discovered that not only had I been paid,a company I’d never worked for had also
paid me! I knew I’d have been beside myself if my own salary was not in my account,
so I tried to get the money back to the right person. It is easier said than done.
The bank couldn’t help as it wasn’t a bank problem. The humanresource
department at the company that paid me was unable to help as I didn’t have enough
details.I rang the bank again.Thankfully I had sympathetic call operator who gave
me a name,so I again rang the company “Daniel” worked for.
I expected the bank would contact me to arrange to take the money from my account
and repay Daniel.I heard nothing for a month and the money remained in my account

when Daniel called, explaining he’d tried to get back his money but had been
unsuccessful as neither the bank nor his company felt it was their error. He had rung
to ask if I could speak to the bank, but after chatting for a few minutes we realized
we could probably fix this problem ourselves.
We decided I would take the money from my account and he would pick it up from me.Due
to my busy job I was unable to meet Daniel personally but he left me a lovely bottle
of wine in exchange for what was rightfully his.I never had any intention of keeping
Daniel’s pay,but the red tape(繁琐手续) made it difficult to do the right thing. It
all came down to two people being able to do what a huge bank and a large company couldn’t
do—admit a mistake has occurred and fix it.

Amy Chua is the author of “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother”.In the book,
Chua, also a professor at Yale Law School, states her childbringingup method learned
from her parents moving here from China years ago:no sleepovers,no television,
no grades lower than an A.
“We guessed her book would cause much disagreement,” Wang Feifei, editor at
CITIC Publishing House, told the reporter.“We don’t take it as a traditional
parenting book, largely because it involves crosscultural conflict.” The book has
been available online since MidJanuary and ranked No.80 in sales on Joyo.com,a
Chinese version of Amazon. It is to receive wider distribution(发行) at bookstores
after the Feb.3 Chinese New Year holiday.

The book has struck a nerve with Americans, especially American mothers. An
article published earlier this month in the Wall Street Journal, called Why Chinese
Mothers are Better, lit a strong reaction(The article now has close to 8,000 comments
and most of them are critical, many of them completely unfriendly).
And that’s just what she did on Tuesday night’s show “The Colbert Report”.The
host Stephen Colbert put Chua on the spot.“People have accused you of saying that
the Chinese way of raising a child is better to what Western mothers do.True or
false?” he asked.“Uh...false,” Chua replied, her voice uncertain.Colbert seized
the opportunity to point out Chua’s inconsistency(不一致).“So you raised your
children in a worse way?” Chua made a set of defensive talking points, some of them
more convincing than others. Her arguments in defense of strict parenting were “I
think if you give a 5 or 8yearold free choice,I think that’s going to be video
games.” Chua thinks that anyone can be what she calls a “Chinese Mother”;all you
have to do is to demand hard work, determination and discipline from your children.“I
think they are fundamental American values.”

I stood at the edge of the cliff. The wind stung my eyes, cutting into my
skin.Darkfeathered birds circled the air, swooping(俯冲) low over the ocean every
now and then to catch their dinner.Hundreds of feet below, the deep ocean beat against
the rough sandy shore.I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with excitement—and
at the same time,fear.
Behind me,I heard the rest of the crew start to mutter.I was here for the shooting
of a movie as I was one of the lead actors in the film Dangerous Things, and this
scene was right in the middle of the climax(高潮).It was vital that this went right.
The director had talked to me about getting a stunt double(替身演员),but I’d

persuaded him that I could handle the dive.I’d taken a diving course a few years ago,

confident that I could do this—up till now.
Someone called out,“Ceria, you don’t have to do this! Are you sure you want
to dive?” It was one of the producers,Callie Evans.I knew I couldn’t turn back
now.I couldn’t bear to see the disappointed look on the director’s face when he
was told that I couldn’t do it.
At that moment, all my fears and worries broke free. The expectation of adventure
and victory seemed to move all the hesitation.I swooped downwards. The air on either
side of me cut into my extended arms.I knew that this wonderful feeling of flight
would only last a few seconds, yet time seemed to slow down so I could hear the thrilled
