Yet cars remain an important option for many families because of its convenience. For people in rural areas, or with mobility problems, a car can be an essential lifeline.‎ Drive with style No matter what kind of car you run, the least reliable part will be you: your driving style has a massive impact on the fuel needed, with acceleration, gear-changing and braking all playing a significant role.‎ Inching along at the pace of a child’s tricycle might feel frugal but won’t magically yield peak economy. In most modern cars, accelerate normally, changing up at 2,000rpm in a diesel, or 2,500rpm in a petrol-powered car. Once at a sensible steady speed, choose the highest gear that will let the engine run without laboring. ‎ A number of eco-driving apps are available for smart phones, to help you improve your smoothness. The A Glass of Water iPhone app offers tips to help you avoid spilling a drop. The free RAC Traffic app is also a great way ‎ to avoid wasting fuel in traffic jams.‎ It’s also important to:‎ ‎● Check tyre pressures once a month. ‎ ‎● Leave junk at home. Carrying extra weight in the boot wastes excess fuel. ‎ ‎● Leave in good time and don’t speed. An extra 10mph on the motorway will add 10% to your fuel bill.‎ Power plays It may be decades before alternative fuels such as hydrogen become commonplace, but hybrid cars that use battery power to boost a petrol or diesel engine are already available in every category. It means many families might find an electric vehicle ideal as a second car.‎ Sell your wheels, still travel by car If you need a car for short periods, such as shopping, and live in a city, then consider a short-term car-hire service such as Zip car instead of owning a car. If you’re traveling longer distances, pay your share of the fuel costs to someone who’s already driving there.‎ ‎1. What can you infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?‎ A. Choosing a fuel-saving car matters more than your driving style.‎ B. Your driving style matters most to the fuel needed.‎ C. You should rely on yourself to drive a car.‎ D. Whether a car saves fuel depends largely on the car you choose.‎ ‎2. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?‎ A. ecological B. convenient C. economical D. beneficial ‎3. Which of the following is NOT a suggested way of saving fuel according to the writer?‎ A. Driving along at a very low speed.‎ B. Checking tyre pressures regularly.‎ C. Putting the extra weight off the boot.‎ D. Applying the eco-driving apps on smartphones.‎ ‎4. Which may be the best choice for a visiting scholar who frequently gives lectures at colleges in a neighboring town?‎ A. Walking. B. Owning an electric vehicle. ‎ C. Renting a car. 从文章第二段第二句来看 “your driving style has a massive impact on the fuel needed, with acceleration, gear-changing and braking all playing a significant role.” ‎ ‎3.【解析】选A. 本题为细节题,要求选出一项不能节省油量耗费的方式。A指开得很慢,有第三段“Once at a sensible steady speed, choose the highest gear that will let the engine run without laboring. ”句意为:开车的时候如果能保持车速稳定,那车次开起来的话也不会太费周折。但需要注意的是开得稳并不代表开得慢,因此可以排除该项;B指经常检查轮胎,这从文章第五段所给建议的第一项“Check tyre pressures once a month.‎ ‎ ”找到依据,是正确选项;C选项指的是将车子行李箱上的额外的重量去掉。这点从“Leave junk at home. Carrying extra weight in the boot wastes excess fuel. ”可以找到依据,为正确选项;‎ ‎4.【解析】选C. 该题属于推断题。要求学生在明确文意的基础上进行推测。题干要求给一个经常去附近城镇大学开讲座的教授提供一个行之有效的出行方式。该题信息定位在最后一段,“If you need a car for short periods, such as shopping, and live in a city, then consider a short-term car-hire service such as Zip car instead of owning a car. ”即如果出行距离不是太远,并且出行频率较高的话可以考虑短期的车辆租赁服务。‎ 好词好句梳理:‎ Your driving style has a massive impact on the fuel needed, with acceleration, gear-changing and braking all playing a significant role.‎ 句意分析:你个人的驾驶风格对燃料的耗费有很大的影响;车速的增加,齿轮方向的改变及时不时的刹车都起了重要的作用。‎ 语法点:‎ ‎1.have an impact on, play a role (in)...‎ ‎2. Once at a sensible steady speed, choose the highest gear that will let the engine run without laboring. ‎ 句意分析:一旦开车时选择了合理的匀速运动,你可以汽车的排档调到最大,使得发动机的在运行的时候毫不费力。‎ 语法点:句中包含一个状语从句,一个定语从句。状语从句为条件状语从句,定语从句中that充当主语成分。‎ II. Read and answer the questions.‎ 教学建议:‎ 为了训练学生快速提取信息的能力,让学生扫读文章,快速找出问题的答案,一般在学生读文章之前给到学生问题。‎ ‎(A)‎ Questions:‎ ‎1. According to the passage, why are Asian people so drawn to Vegas?‎ ‎2. When is the best time to get a good price for a posh room?‎ KEYS:‎ ‎1. Because of the compactness of Vegas. 2. In the mid-week.‎ ‎(B)‎ Dining And Entertaining In Las Vegas ‎ Haven't been to Las Vegas (拉斯维加斯)yet? You're in a crowd that's getting smaller all the time. Last year, 800,000 Asians made the pilgrimage to the neon Mecca in the Nevada desert. Led by the Japanese, Asian travelers make up Vegas's largest overseas market. JAL (日本航空公司)now runs five non-stop flights weekly from Tokyo. While there's no direct service from other Asian cities, remember that Vegas is less than an hour's flight from Los Angeles.‎ What makes Vegas such a draw for people from this part of the world ? Perhaps residents of Asia's sprawling ‎ mega-cities appreciate its compactness: Vegas lets you combine gambling, flashy culture and theme park in one heck of a holiday. And then there are those otherworldly hotels, the buildings that look as if they've been transported to Vegas in a time machine. The latest in this long, gaudy line is 760 million in Paris, which includes a 50-story reproduction of the Eiffel Tower, a two-thirds scale replica of the Arc de Trimophe and cobble-stoned streets lined with fancy boutiques. The only things missing from the full Paris experience are surly waiters and overflowing gutters. Another new resort, Mandalay Bay, is built in the shape of upright bars of gold bullion and attempt to conjure up a semi-imaginary locale that is part Bali.‎ Aside from the arresting architecture , what makes these hotels interesting is their afford -ability. "High season" here is every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so the best time to get a good price on a posh room is mid-week. At the deluxe Four Seasons, the only property in town without a casino, low-tide rates start at a modest 195 for a standard room, and Bellagio can house you for as little as 139 . At peak time, those prices can double.‎ What can you do in Vegas besides gamble? Plenty. In less than four hours you can be whisked from your hotel to he Grand Canyon via helicopter and enjoy a champagne picnic down on the canyon floor. Then there’s world class shopping: Vegas retailer rival anything offered by their counterparts on ritzy Fifth Avenue or Rodeo Drive .‎ 生词学习:‎ reproduction[ri:prə'dʌkʃən]‎ n. ‎ combine [kəm'bain]‎ v. 结合,联合,使结合 n. 集团,联合企业 Gaudy [ˈgɔ:di:]‎ 花哨的, ( 尤指) 俗气的 modest ['mɔdist] ‎ adj. 谦虚的,适度的,端庄的 conjure up 使某事物浮现于脑际 resort [ri'zɔ:t] ‎ n. In fact, British young men are five times more likely than their Italian contemporaries to have settled down by 25 .‎ ‎ So what is happening? Has the "Loaded" generation gone soft? Celebrity has done a service by casting its limelight on a largely invisible side of fatherhood.‎ ‎ When Michael Douglas ( ageing American actor) reveals about the wrinkly end of the ‎ paternal experience, Michael Owen is doing for boy dads.‎ ‎ Powerful celebrity role models such as Beckham help young fathers feel less of an alien. Beckham, of course , has no problem with the breadwinner bit, but his distinguishing characteristic is his public endorsement of caring fatherhood. For a young dad, this can be liberation.‎ ‎ Just 20 percent of teenage fathers remain in touch with the mothers 15 years later. It means that 8,000 children born to teenage dad this year will not be seeing him by the time they themselves are teenagers.‎ ‎ Does this matter to the child? Hugely. According to recent findings by Professor Judy Dunn at the UK's Institute of psychiatry, a close relationship between an estranged father and his childish highly beneficial to a child's development, particularly when the mother became pregnant as a teenager.‎ ‎ New research from Bristol University in England suggests that young fatherhood, far from being problematic, can bring young, disadvantaged men out of social exclusion.‎ ‎ The state has yet to appreciate the potential of young fathers summed up by Michael Owen's words: "I've had a few exciting moments in my career but nothing that compares to how I felt when Louise told me the news. "‎ ‎ The example of Michael Owen's public excitement may bolster some isolated young men. But as long as to many other people and institutions are ambivalent about his role and fail to offer a helping hand, that figure of 8,000 children in the UK losing their young dads by their teenage years is unlikely to fall.‎ ‎ 练习题:‎ True or False:‎ ‎1. Young men in UK is less likely to get married before 25 than those in Italy.‎ ‎2. Celebrity’s way of life can affect average person.‎ ‎3. Though father of two children, Beckham never supports caring fatherhood.‎ ‎4.20% of the children born to a teenage father will not live with their father when these childrenare in their teenage.‎ ‎5. 80% males who get married in teens will leave their mates in 15 years.‎ KEYS:‎ ‎1. F 2. T 3 . F 4 . F 5. T ‎(D)‎ Question:‎ What do companies wanting a GM product approved in the UK or USA do?‎ KEY:They are required to provide regulatory bodies with results of their own safety tests.‎ Is GM Food Safe To Eat ?‎ ‎ Traditional plant breeding involves crossing varieties of the same species in ways they could cross naturally. For example, disease-resistant varieties of wheat have been crossed with high-yield wheat to combine these properties. This type of natural gene exchange is safe and fairly predictable.‎ ‎ Genetic engineering ( GE) involves exchanging genes between unrelated species that cannot naturally exchange genes with each other. GE can involve the exchange of genes between vastly different species — e.g. putting scorpion toxin genes into maize or fish antifreeze genes into tomatoes. It is possible that a scorpion toxin gene, even when it is in maize DNA, will still get the organism to produce scorpion toxin — but what other effects may it have in this alien environment? We are already seeing this problem — adding human growth hormone genes to pigs certainly makes them grow — but it also gives them arthritis and makes them cross-eyed, which was entirely unpredictable.‎ ‎ It will be obvious, for example, that the gene for human intelligence will not have the same effect if inserted into cabbage DNA as it had in human DNA— but what side-effect would it have? In other words, is GM food safe to eat? The answer is that nobody knows because long-term tests have not been carried out.‎ ‎ Companies wanting a GM product approved in the UK or USA are required to provide regulatory bodies with results of their own safety tests. Monsanto’s soya beans were apparently fed to fish for 10 weeks before being approved. There was no requirement for independent testing, for long-term testing, for testing on humans or testing for specific dangers to children or allergicpeople.‎ ‎ The current position of the UK Government is that "There is no evidence of long-term dangers from GM foods. ‎ ‎"In the US, the American Food and Drug Administration is currently being prosecuted for covering up research that suggested possible risks from GM foods.‎ ‎ ‎ Ⅰ. Match the words with their Chinese quivalents:‎ ‎1. disease-resistant A. 掩盖( 真相)‎ ‎2. side-effect B. 高产的 ‎3. long-term dangers C. 长期危害 ‎4. cover up D. 副作用 ‎5. high-yield E. 抗病的 KEYS:Ⅰ. 1. E  2. D  3 . C  4. A  5 . B ‎(E)‎ 来源:2014年黄浦区一模C篇 ‎ Publicity offers several benefits. There are not costs for message time or space. An ad in prime-time television may cost $250,000 to $5,000,000 or more per minute, whereas a five-minute report on a network newscast would not cost anything. Publicity reaches a mass audience within a short time and new products or company policies are widely known.‎ ‎ Credibility about messages is high, because they are reported in independent media. A newspaper review of a movie has more believability than an ad in the same paper, because the reader associates independence with objectivity. Similarly, people are more likely to pay attention to news reports than to ads. For example, Women’s Wear Daily has both fashion reports and advertisements. Readers spend time reading the stories, but they skim through the ads. Furthermore, there may be 10 commercials during a half-hour television program or hundreds of ads in a magazine. Feature stories are much fewer in number and stand out clearly.‎ Publicity also has some significant limitations. A firm has little control over messages, their timing, their placement, or their coverage by a given medium. It may issue detailed news releases and find only portions mentioned by the media, and media have the ability to be much more critical than a firm would like.‎ For example, in 1982, Procter & Gamble faced a massive publicity problem over the meaning of its 123-year-old company logo. To fight this negative publicity, the firm had a spokesperson appear on Good Morning America to disprove the rumor(谣言). The false rumors were temporarily put to rest. However, in 1985, publicity became so troublemaking that Procter & Gamble decided to remove the logo from its products.‎ ‎ A firm may want publicity during certain periods, such as when a new product is introduced or new store opened, but the media may not cover the introduction or opening until after the time it would aid the firm. Similarly, media determine the placement of a story; it may follow a report on crime or sports. Finally, the media decide whether to cover a story at all and the amount of coverage to be devoted to it. ‎ 练习题:‎ ‎1. All of the following advantages of publicity are mentioned EXCEPT _____.‎ ‎ A. time saving B. attentiveness C. credibility D. profitability ‎2. Compared with ad, news report or featuring stories are more _____.‎ ‎ A. believable B. clear C. dependent D. subjective ‎3. The example of “Procter & Gamble” is given to show _____.‎ ‎ A. the efficient way of disproving rumors B. the importance of a spokesperson ‎ ‎ C. the interaction between firms and media D. the negative effect of publicity ‎4. What’s the author’s attitude towards publicity?‎ ‎ A. doubtful B. objective C. passive D. supportive 解析:‎ ‎【文章大意】本文主要讲述了广告的好处与坏处。‎ ‎1. 【解析】:选D.本题是细节题。学生在做题的过程中要注意到黑体加粗词EXCEPT的意图:要求选择不符合广告宣传优点的一项。信息来源主要在前两段, “a five-minute report on a network newscast would not cost anything”体现了“time saving”的优点;“Feature stories are much fewer in number and stand out clearly.”能够提高读者的“attentiveness”;“Credibility about messages is high”可以看出“credibility”也符合其优点。只有D未提到。‎ ‎2. 【解析】:选A. 本题难度不大,信息来源于文章第二段“Credibility about messages is high, because they are reported in independent media.” “believable”是对 “credibility”的同义转换。‎ ‎3. 【解析】选D. 本题为推断题,文章第四段举了宝洁公司的例子。讲述了宝洁公司在宣传公司的logo意义方面面临着很大的问题。接着文章第二句 “To fight this negative publicity, the firm had a spokesperson appear on Good Morning America to disprove the rumor(谣言)”.可以推断出列举宝洁的例子主要是为了反映广告宣传的消极作用。‎ ‎4. 【解析】选B. 本题也属于推断题,要求推断作者对于广告宣传的态度。从全文的脉络看来,作者论述了广告宣传的优缺点,并没有给出自己的观点,只是充当描述者的角色。因此作者的态度是客观的,及objective.‎ 好词好句梳理:‎ 1. ‎ Similarly, people are more likely to pay attention to news reports than to ads.‎ 句意分析:类似的是,人们更加有可能关注新闻报道而不是广告本身。‎ 语法点:‎ ‎1.be likely to do something, pay attention to. 同时本句中的similarly为评注性副词。‎ 2. The concepts of low carbon are low energy and no waste. It is such a significant project that I can’t wait to present my ideas on how to promote it.‎ ‎ On the first place, a no-car day is supposed to set up every week in our school. Because cars not only cause serious air pollution but also waste energy. On no-car day, neither students nor teachers ‎ are allowed to drive to school. Meanwhile, just walk, jump, cycle or run. Use our legs and enjoy the fun. On the second place, we had best not use plastic bags any more. No one can stand the “white pollution”. So, it is wise to use bags which can be reused again and again. Finally, one thing that we should keep in mind: every big thing comes from the subtle. Therefore, as students, we ought to turn out the lights the moment we leave, turn off the tap in time, and reuse our textbook and so on.‎ ‎ All in all, it weighs greatly for all of us to put the low carbon lifestyle into practice. Just set our mind to these: no-car day, no plastic bags, and no waste. Let’s do it now.‎ 低碳生活英语作文 ‎(2)适合优秀学生 ‎ Today's society is a highly developed technological society. Mr Stern and what he's done for the league, gave me an opportunity to play the game of basketball. I played it to the best I could play it; I tried to enhance the game itself. I've tried to be the best basketball player that I could be.‎ KEYS:‎ to announce exhausted so that because being finding can a itself bigger When I was young, it wasn’t the parental love that filled my thoughts in the spring. It was baseball. ‎ I loved everything about the game — the crack of a bat, the excitement of chasing a ground ball across short green grass, even watching the games on our old black-and-white TV. Yet looking back now, nothing was quite as important to me as the annual ritual (老规矩) of playing catch with my dad.‎ Dad was never much of a baseball fan, but as green leaves began to shoot on bare branches and warmth returned to the air, he would grab his old mitt (棒球手套) and head out to the yard with me just the same. There was something beneficial about playing catch with him, the hum of the ball as it sailed through the air, and the friendly pop as it hit the leather netting. We may have been 50 feet apart, but the flight of that ball connected us, forming as strong a relationship as any father-son talk ever could have. ‎ I was never the star of my Little League team, yet Dad never cared about that. Every year, he would be out there, waiting to field any false throw I sent his way. ‎ As I grew older, I realized that our game was a reflection of our relationship — that even if a problem didn’t involve a glove and a ball, Dad would always be there to handle anything I threw in his direction. His devotion to our springtime ritual showed his devotion to me — not only to my love of baseballl but also to my life. ‎ I’ve often heard it said that “the devil is in the details.” Now I realize that in my relationship with my father, love was in the details. ‎ ‎1. According to recent polls (民意调查), sixty to seventy percent of Americans consider themselves to be moderately happy and one in twenty persons feels very unhappy. Psychologists have been studying the factors that contribute to happiness. It is not predictable, nor is a person in an apparently ideal situation necessarily happy. The ideal situation may have little to do with his actual feelings.‎ A good education and income are usually considered necessary for happiness. Though both may contribute, they are only chief factors if the person is seriously undereducated or actually suffering from lack of physical needs.‎ The rich are not likely to be happier than the middle-income group or even those with very low incomes. People with college educations are somewhat happier than those who did not graduate from high school, and it is believed that this is mainly because they have more opportunities to control their lives. Yet people with a high income and a college education may be less happy than those with the same income and no college education.‎ Poor health does not rule out happiness except for the severely disabled or those in pain. Learning to cope with a health problem can contribute to happiness. Those who have good relationship with other family members are happier than those who live alone. Love has a higher correlation with happiness than any other factors.‎ It should be noted that people quickly get used to what they have, and they are happiest when they feel they are increasing their level no matter where it stands at a given time.‎ Children whose parents were happily married have happier childhoods, but are not necessarily happier adults.‎ The best formula (准则) for happiness is to be able to develop AQ (Adversity Quotient that can be of great benefit when running into trouble), to have a personal involvement and commitment, and to develop self-confidence and self-esteem.‎ ‎1. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.‎ A. happiness is neither predictable nor apparent B. a person in an apparently ideal situation must be happy C. the rich are not likely to be happier than the middle-income group D. happiness is not necessarily connected to one’s situation in society ‎2. The letters AQ in the last paragraph most probably mean _____.‎ ‎ A. ambition to defeat others in a severe competition B. ability to overcome difficulty and get out of embarrassing situation C. methods of solving difficult problems and challenges in life D. attitudes towards severe competition especially in trouble ‎ ‎4.
