Few people enjoying getting shots at the doctor's office. But many of these shots are important vaccines
(疫苗 )that help prevent us from getting certain diseases or types of infection.
Vaccines got their start in Europe in the 1720s, when a British woman named Lady Mary Wortley
Montagu was visiting Turkey. She saw Turkish doctors purposefully inoculating( 接种 ), or inflecting, people
with small amounts of smallpox. Smallpox is a painful, deadly disease that had no cure at the time. But Lady
Montagu was amazed that the patients not only recovered, but then proved to be immune( 免疫的 )to the
disease!
Lady Montagu quickly returned to England, excited to share this new procedure. But inoculation took
many years to catch on. One problem was that no one had a precise way of inoculating people safely.
Occasionally, patients would become fully inflected and begin spreading the disease. However, inoculation
eventually saved enough people for it to become the common practice for preventing smallpox
Some years later, a scientist named Edward Jenner discovered that people who had been inflected with a
disease called cowpox became resistant to smallpox. Cowpox was less much harmful than smallpox. Jenner
convinced doctors to inoculate people with cowpox, which led to a very safe vaccine and far fewer outbreaks
of smallpox. Finally, a French scientist named Louis Pasteur realized that Jenner ’ s idea could be used to treat
other diseases. Since then, vaccines have been made for many other diseases, such as polo, tetanus, and
rabies
Today, scientists and doctors continue to create new vaccines that could potentially save millions of
lives worldwide.

As new technology is introduced, there are many who worry about its influence on our current and
future lifestyles — particularly when it comes to jobs. It is a current belief that with the rise of automation
and artificial intelligence (AI), many people ’ s jobs, and therefore their livelihoods, are likely to be lost.
Automation in the workplace is nothing new. Machines have been performing dull tasks on our behalf
for years, allowing us to escape many repetitive jobs. In fact, the International Federation of Robotics states
that in manufacturing on average there are now 74 robots per 10,000 employees. That has risen from 66 in
2015.
A recent report from the McKinsey Global Institute states that nearly two thirds of all jobs could have at
least 30% of their activities automated by 2030. However, McKinsey also believes that this new technology
will also ‘ create new occupations that do not exist today, much as technologies in the past have done. ’ As the
horse gave way to the car, hostlers (马夫 ) became mechanics and mechanised manufacturing drove up wages
and created more long-term roles than it destroyed.
‘ It ’ s an evolution of work, ’ says Ian Barkin, a robotic process automation specialist. As low-skilled jobs
are taken on by AI, people will need to learn new skills. ‘ This calls on us to focus on improving ourselves.
Technology can lead to job reductions but it doesn ’ t have to, ’ says Barkin.
Whether or not robots and AI will leave us all jobless remains to be seen. Current views on the subject
are mixed. Increased automation could indeed lead to a loss of some jobs, but at the same time is likely to
create many more as new skills are required. Will they balance out? I ’ ll get my AI assistant to get back to you
on that one.
28. How do many people feel about the influence of AI?
A. Quite confused. B. Quite surprised. C. A sense of fear. D. A sense of pride.
29. What might be McKinsey ’ s attitude to the rise of automation?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Optimistic. D. Ambiguous.
- 3 -
30. What is most important in dealing with AI according to Ian Barkin?
A. The ability to keep learning.
B. The ability to think positively.
C. The ability to take risks in an uncertain future.
D. The ability to adapt oneself to the new environment.
31. Which can best express the author ’ s view on automation?
A. Every coin has two sides.
B. Where there is life, there is hope.
C. It ’ s better to do well than to say well.
D. A bad workman quarrels with his tools.
D
It was once common to regard Britain as a society with class distinction. Each class had unique
characteristics.
In recent years, many writers have begun to speak the 'decline of class' and 'classless society' in Britain.
And in modern day consumer society everyone is considered to be middle class.
But pronouncing the death of class is too early. A recent wide-ranging society of public opinion found
90 percent of people still placing themselves in particular class; 73 percent agreed that class was still a vital
part of British society; and 52 percent thought there were still sharp class differences. Thus, class may not be
culturally and politically obvious, yet it remains an important part of British society. Britain seems to have a
love of stratification.
One unchanging aspect of a British person's class position is accent. The words a person speaks tell her
or his class. A study of British accents during 1970s found that a voice sounding like a BBC newsreader was
viewed as the most attractive voice. Most people said this accent sounded 'educated' and 'soft'. The accents
placed at the bottom in this study, on the other hand, were regional city accents. These accents were seen as
'common' and 'ugly'. However, a similar study of British accents in the US turned these results upside down
and placed some regional accents as the most attractive and BBC English as the least. This suggests that
British attitudes towards accent have deep roots and are based on class prejudice.
In recent years, however, young upper middle-class people in London, have begun to adopt some
regional accents, in order to hide their class origins. This is an indication of class becoming unnoticed.
However, the 1995 pop song 'Common People' puts forward the view that though a middle-class person may
'want to live like common people' they can never appreciate the reality of a working-class life.
32.A recent study of public opinion shows that in modern Britain ________.
A .most people belong to middle class
B.people regard themselves socially different
C.it is easy to recognize a person ’ s class
D.it is time to end class distinction
33.The word “ stratification ” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A .variety B.qualification C.authority D.division
34.British attitudes towards accent ________.
A .are based on regional status B.have a long tradition
C.are shared by the Americans D.have changed in recent years
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A .The middle class is expanding B.A person ’ s accent reflects his class
C.Class is a key part of British society D.Each class has unique characteristics.
